No verified court order or direct shipment ban stopped Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X chips or Copilot+ PCs. Arm threatened in October 2024 to terminate Qualcomm’s Arm architecture license over a dispute involving Nuvia technology. Arm withdrew that notice in January 2025, and Qualcomm later won the main trial-level dispute. The fight was not necessarily over: Arm said it planned to appeal, and a separate Qualcomm lawsuit against Arm was scheduled for trial on October 5, 2026, according to company filings available before that date.
For PC buyers, the distinction matters: the dispute raised a potential risk to future Qualcomm processor supply, but it did not invalidate Windows, Microsoft’s Copilot+ designation, or the ability to sell every existing Snapdragon X computer.
What Arm actually threatened
Arm’s October 22, 2024 notice said it believed Qualcomm had breached its Architecture License Agreement and could terminate the agreement if Qualcomm did not cure the alleged breaches within 60 days. Arm’s allegations concerned CPU technology associated with Nuvia, a chip-design company Qualcomm acquired in 2021. Qualcomm disputed Arm’s position.

A termination could have put affected future processor production at risk, but it would not automatically have stopped every computer already in stores or forced owners to stop using their PCs. The practical outcome would have depended on the contracts, the scope of any termination, and any court remedies.

Arm later withdrew its breach notice. Qualcomm’s SEC filing says Arm did so on January 8, 2025, stating it had no current plan to terminate Qualcomm’s agreement while reserving its rights. Qualcomm’s filing describes the notice and its withdrawal.
Why the dispute reached PC buyers
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X processors use custom CPU designs associated with Nuvia’s former engineers and powered an important early group of Windows Copilot+ PCs. Qualcomm’s PC strategy depends on custom Arm-compatible CPU cores, rather than simply using standard cores designed by Arm.
Arm’s position was that Nuvia had its own Arm Architecture License Agreement, that the agreement restricted transfer without Arm’s consent, and that Qualcomm could not use its separate Qualcomm license to obtain the benefit of Nuvia’s pre-acquisition work. Arm terminated the Nuvia agreement in 2022 and argued that the relevant CPU designs were not covered by Qualcomm’s agreement.

Qualcomm argued that its existing license covered the technology at issue, that Qualcomm developed the challenged CPUs after acquiring Nuvia, and that its agreement allowed work by designers or subsidiaries. It also alleged in separate litigation that Arm failed to meet delivery obligations and did not offer licenses on commercially reasonable terms. Those are the parties’ competing claims, not interchangeable findings of fact.
The terminology can obscure what was at stake:
- Arm instruction-set architecture (ISA): The rules defining the instructions a compatible processor can execute.
- CPU core: A particular design that implements those rules and executes instructions.
- System-on-chip (SoC): A larger processor package that can include CPU cores, graphics, AI accelerators, memory controllers, and other components.
- Copilot+ PC: A Microsoft-defined PC category. It is not synonymous with Snapdragon X, and the dispute did not challenge Microsoft’s Copilot software or Windows license.
The case was therefore about contracts and the provenance and licensing of particular CPU technology—not a claim that Arm owns every Qualcomm chip or every computer using an Arm-compatible processor.
How the case unfolded

What the jury and judge decided
The December 2024 jury reached a mixed result. It found Arm had not proved Qualcomm breached the relevant provision concerning handling technology after termination, and it found Qualcomm had proved its use of Arm code was licensed under the Qualcomm agreement. The jury did not reach a complete verdict on whether Nuvia had breached its own agreement.

On September 30, 2025, the judge granted Nuvia judgment on that remaining issue and rejected Arm’s request for judgment as a matter of law or a new trial. The opinion said the jury had sufficient evidence to find Qualcomm’s challenged CPU designs were covered by Qualcomm’s license. Read the Delaware court’s post-trial opinion.
This was a significant trial-level win for Qualcomm and reduced the immediate legal uncertainty around its Snapdragon X strategy. It is not the same as a ruling that every current or future Qualcomm processor is permanently free from any Arm licensing dispute. Arm said it intended to appeal. Separately, Qualcomm’s claims against Arm continued. Arm’s March 31, 2026 filing described the appeal posture, the consolidated cases, and the scheduled October 5, 2026 trial.
What it means if you own or are considering a Snapdragon X PC
Existing owners should not infer from this dispute alone that their computer will stop working or lose Windows support. The reviewed record contains no verified universal recall, sales ban, or termination of Microsoft’s Windows license. Windows and Copilot+ were not the subject of the Arm–Qualcomm processor-license dispute.

Prospective buyers need not treat Arm’s 2024 notice as proof that Snapdragon X PCs are about to disappear. The notice was withdrawn and Qualcomm prevailed on the principal trial-level issues. But litigation risk and product-market risk are different. Legal developments could affect Qualcomm’s future designs, OEM road maps, or supply arrangements; they do not determine whether a particular PC suits your needs.

- Check that your essential applications, games, VPNs, security tools, and peripherals work on Windows on Arm. Compatibility can vary, especially for software requiring specialized drivers or kernel-level components.
- Compare the specific model’s performance, battery life, memory, storage, warranty, and support commitments. Copilot+ branding does not guarantee identical performance or compatibility across machines.
- If you are buying for an organization or a long-lived fleet, ask the OEM about model availability and support duration; do not rely on a headline about a licensing threat as a substitute for those commitments.
- If broad compatibility with legacy x86 software, specialist drivers, or games is your priority, compare Intel- and AMD-based Windows PCs as well. A non-Qualcomm Copilot+ PC may also be an option, depending on the configuration and your requirements.
Microsoft describes the Copilot+ PC category, while Qualcomm provides details on its Snapdragon X platforms. Those pages can help identify product categories, but confirm current specifications and availability with the manufacturer before buying.

Why the dispute was not necessarily finished
There were two related but distinct legal tracks. Arm’s 2022 case against Qualcomm and Nuvia produced the 2024 jury trial and Qualcomm’s September 2025 trial-level victory. Qualcomm also brought a separate action against Arm, alleging, among other things, failures to provide deliverables and improper conduct concerning termination and licensing terms. The companies’ cases were consolidated, and Arm’s March 2026 filing said trial was expected to start October 5, 2026.
The scheduled trial date does not establish its eventual outcome, and the filing is a snapshot of the schedule as reported then. Likewise, the September 2025 ruling did not itself settle every claim in the separate litigation or make future licensing disagreements impossible. Qualcomm was also economically important to Arm: Arm reported that Qualcomm accounted for 9% of its fiscal-year 2026 revenue. That underscores the commercial interdependence, but does not establish that either company would settle or how future negotiations would end.
For readers, the sound conclusion is narrower than the original headline: Arm’s termination threat created a plausible risk to Qualcomm’s future custom-CPU business and therefore to some future PC plans. It did not produce a verified shipment halt, and Qualcomm’s key trial-level win substantially changed the posture of that threat.
