Yes—many old Samsung phones are worth money. In the United States, an older Galaxy can be worth anything from recycling value to several hundred dollars. The exact amount depends less on age alone than on the model, storage, carrier status, condition, account locks, battery, and selling channel.
A five-year-old flagship may be worth more than a newer budget Galaxy A-series phone. Before trading in or recycling yours, identify the exact model, compare recent completed-sale prices with trade-in offers, and securely remove your data.
How much are old Samsung phones worth?
The following are U.S. marketplace observations from July 2026. They are not guaranteed payouts: active listings, completed sales, trade-in credits, fees, shipping, inspection adjustments, and promotions can produce different results.

Swappa separates average listing prices, actual sale prices, and trade-in figures. That distinction matters: a private sale may produce more than a trade-in, but it also requires listing the phone, handling questions, shipping it, and managing disputes. Use completed-sale data rather than asking prices when estimating your likely proceeds.
Which Samsung phones usually retain value?
“Old Samsung” covers very different products. Consider the phone’s family and generation:
- Higher-value candidates: recent Galaxy S and S Ultra models, Note devices, Z Fold and Z Flip foldables, unlocked phones, high-storage variants, and excellent-condition devices.
- Middle-value candidates: Galaxy S20–S22 standard and Plus models, S20 FE and S21 FE phones, Note 10 and Note 20 variants, and recent A-series 5G models.
- Lower-value candidates: older standard S6–S9 models, J-series phones, older low-end A-series phones, carrier-locked devices, and phones with cracked screens, burn-in, weak batteries, or missing proprietary parts.
These are valuation tendencies, not fixed price bands. A newer low-end A-series phone may still sell for less than an older S Ultra because the flagship has better cameras, display technology, storage, and resale demand.
Special models that deserve closer inspection
- Note phones: Include the correct, working S Pen. A missing or incompatible pen can reduce buyer interest.
- Ultra models: Their cameras, displays, storage, and larger batteries can support stronger resale prices.
- Foldables: Check the inner and outer displays, hinge, crease, screen protector, and signs of dust or flex-cable damage. A working foldable can be valuable, but buyers price in repair risk.
- FE, Active, and XCover models: These may appeal to specific buyers, but demand varies more than it does for mainstream Galaxy S models.
- Older imported or 4G models: Network compatibility depends on bands, VoLTE support, carrier certification, and current U.S. carrier policy. Never assume that every 4G Galaxy works on every network.
The six factors that determine your phone’s value
1. Exact model and variant
“Galaxy” is not enough. Galaxy S20, S20+, S20 Ultra, S21 FE, and S21 Ultra have different values. LTE and 5G versions, U.S. carrier variants, factory-unlocked models, international models, storage capacities, and colors may also price differently.
On the phone, open Settings → About phone and record the model name, model number, and storage. Menu wording can vary by One UI version and carrier; use the Settings search field for About phone if necessary. Keep the IMEI private and do not include it in public listing photographs.

2. Unlocked or carrier-restricted status
Unlocked phones are generally easier to sell because buyers have more carrier options. A carrier-branded device can still have value, but buyers may need to know whether it is paid off, network-unlocked, compatible with their carrier, or affected by an unpaid-balance or fraud block.
Carrier unlocking rules differ according to the carrier, account status, device history, and country. Do not call a phone unlocked merely because it accepts another SIM. Verify the status and check the IMEI privately through a reputable carrier or marketplace process.

Inspect and test:
- Screen cracks, dead pixels, OLED burn-in, scratches, and touch response
- Camera lenses, autofocus, flash, speakers, and microphones
- Charging port, charging behavior, and data transfer
- Fingerprint reader, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC, and cellular connectivity
- Battery drain, overheating, and liquid-damage indicators
- S Pen detection and writing, where applicable
- Foldable hinge, crease, inner display, outer display, and screen protector
Samsung’s trade-in requirements specifically emphasize a functioning charging port that supports charging and data transfer. Review its trade-in requirements before relying on an estimate.
Do not sell or continue charging a phone with a swollen battery. Treat it as a safety issue and follow local hazardous-electronics guidance.
4. Storage capacity and accessories
Higher storage can improve value, although the premium varies by model and current demand. Original boxes, cases, chargers, and documentation may help a listing look complete, but model-specific accessories matter most. An S Pen required for normal use is more significant than a generic charging cable.

5. Software-support runway
Buyers usually prefer a phone with remaining security and app support. Support varies by exact model, region, carrier, and software version, so do not use one universal end date for every Galaxy. Check Samsung’s model-specific support information and disclose prominently when a phone no longer receives current security updates.

An unsupported phone may still work as a camera, music player, navigation device, or Wi-Fi-only handset, but it should not automatically be described as secure for banking, authentication, or other sensitive tasks.
6. Lock and ownership status
A phone that powers on may still be difficult or impossible to sell if it is blacklisted, reported lost or stolen, still financed, protected by Google or Samsung account locks, or enrolled in company mobile-device management.
Where should you sell an old Samsung phone?

Private sale
A private sale often has the highest potential payout for an unlocked, working phone. List the exact model, storage, carrier status, color, condition, known defects, accessories, and reset status. Use clear photographs of the front, back, edges, cameras, charging port, and any damage.
Compare the expected sale price with fees, shipping, insurance, return exposure, and your time. A higher advertised price is not necessarily a higher net payout.

Samsung trade-in
Samsung’s program can be convenient when you are purchasing an eligible Galaxy. Samsung requires the owner to remove personal information and security locks, and the phone must meet technical requirements. The initial estimate may be adjusted after inspection. Promotional credit is not the same as unrestricted cash. See Samsung’s current trade-in page and its preparation instructions.
Best Buy and carrier trade-ins
Best Buy says offers depend on age, condition, required accessories, and current resale prices. Its value may come as a gift card or purchase-related credit.
Carrier promotions can exceed an ordinary sale, but calculate the total net benefit: required plan cost, activation or upgrade fees, device installments, monthly-credit duration, cancellation consequences, and whether changing service forfeits remaining credits. Verizon’s trade-in guidance also requires the phone to be reset and personal data removed.
Recycling
Recycling is sensible when repair or resale is uneconomical, the phone is unsafe, or it has no meaningful parts value. Samsung’s U.S. mobile take-back terms place responsibility on the owner to back up and delete data and remove accessories they want to keep; the cited terms apply to the continental United States. Review the take-back terms.
How to prepare the phone securely
- Identify and document it. Record the exact model, model number, storage, carrier, unlocked status, condition, accessories, and private IMEI.
- Back up your data. Save photos, contacts, messages, files, authenticator information, and anything stored locally.
- Remove accounts. Remove the Google account and Samsung account, disable screen locks, and sign out of payment and authentication apps.
- Remove removable connections. Delete eSIM profiles, remove the physical SIM, and remove the microSD card.
- Factory-reset it. The usual path is Settings → General management → Reset → Factory data reset → Reset → Delete all. If labels differ, search Settings for Factory data reset.
- Stop at setup. After resetting, leave the phone at the initial setup screen and do not sign in again.
- Check ownership status privately. Confirm that it is not blacklisted, financed, account-locked, or company-managed. A former work phone may need its organization’s administrator to release it.
A factory reset is not a complete preparation step if accounts, eSIMs, microSD cards, or management locks remain. Never publish the full IMEI in a listing.

Should you repair it before selling?
Use this calculation:
Expected post-repair sale price − repair cost − selling fees and shipping − risk of hidden defects = expected net value.
Repairing a cracked screen often does not pay for itself on an older standard Galaxy. It may make more sense for a recent Ultra or foldable, but foldable repairs have especially high uncertainty. Do not assume a repair will increase the resale value by more than its cost.
When keeping the phone may be better
If resale value is low, a working Galaxy can become:
- An offline music or podcast player
- A dedicated navigation device
- A smart-home controller
- A security-camera monitor
- A child’s Wi-Fi-only device
- A backup camera, emergency handset, or testing phone
- A digital photo frame
Do not use an unsupported phone for banking, password storage, authentication, or other sensitive activities unless you understand the security risk. Remove old accounts and reset it before repurposing it for someone else.
A practical decision tree
- Recent, unlocked, fully functional flagship: Check Samsung and carrier promotions, then compare the likely private-sale net proceeds.
- Older but working Galaxy: Compare completed marketplace sales with the convenience of a trade-in or buyback offer.
- Locked, financed, or damaged phone: Verify ownership and blacklist status, then compare parts value with repair cost.
- Dead, swollen, or severely damaged phone: Stop charging it and use a reputable recycling or hazardous-electronics channel.
