  • Supports cards, tickets, loyalty items and transit use

What Google Pay does

Google Pay lets people pay online or in apps using payment methods saved to a Google Account. Autofill can place saved card details into checkout on Chrome and Android devices.

A Google Pay button lets shoppers select a payment method and shipping address. On Android, users can tap a phone at store readers or transit gates with saved cards, tickets and other items.

Fees and plans

Google Pay has one published plan: free. There is no free trial because the service is already free.

Google says merchants pay no additional fee to accept Google Pay, although their payment provider’s processing fees still apply. The facts do not publish card-transfer fees, exchange-rate margins, monthly charges or pay-later costs.

At checkout, eligible users may choose providers such as Affirm, Klarna or Zip.

Where it runs

Google Pay works on Android, iPhone, the web and Chrome. Google also lists Wear OS support. Businesses can add its checkout API to an app or website and keep their existing payment-processing setup.

Contactless store and transit payments require an Android phone with NFC. A bank may limit which of its cards work. Google Wallet requires Android 9 or later, does not work on rooted devices and does not support work profiles.

Protection, as Google publishes it

Google says payment data is encrypted end to end between its servers and the payment processor. It also describes built-in authentication, transaction encryption and fraud protection.

Google states that it will not sell users’ personal information or transaction history. For qualifying Google Pay API transactions using Visa or Mastercard device tokens, Google says fraud chargeback liability may shift to card issuers.

Google says U.S. domestic payments are processed by Google Payment Corp., a licensed money transmitter. International money-transfer services available through Google Pay are provided and processed by Wise US Inc. These are Google’s statements.

Strengths

It combines online checkout, in-app payments, saved-card autofill, Android tap-to-pay and transit use in one service.

Eligible cards can use virtual card numbers that hide the actual card number from merchants online. Google lists eligible Capital One, American Express, Discover and select Visa cards.

Merchants can use Android and web APIs with existing payment processing, and Google says the API can be added with a few lines of code.

Catches to check

Some Google Pay and Google Wallet features are limited to certain countries, regions and devices. Card eligibility can also depend on the bank.

Contactless use needs Android, NFC and a supported card. The Wallet app has Android 9 and device restrictions, including no rooted phones or work profiles.

Google does not publish payment-provider processing prices in these facts.

Who may want another option

People needing a service that runs contactless payments on an iPhone should note that Google’s tap-to-pay requirements specify an Android phone with NFC. Businesses comparing acceptance tools can also review payment gateways.

Readers looking for a dedicated transfer service may compare money transfer apps, including Wise for international-transfer information.

Verdict

Google Pay fits people who want a free way to reuse saved cards across online checkout, apps, Android stores and transit, with optional virtual card numbers for eligible cards. It also gives businesses an API-based checkout option without an added Google acceptance fee.

It is less suitable where device, country, bank-card or Android requirements rule out a needed payment feature, or where a buyer needs clearly published processing, transfer or pay-later prices.
