Apple’s iPhone has become dependable, powerful, and increasingly predictable. Its reported roadmap could change that—not with one redesign, but with three successive attempts to make the hardware feel new again.
There is an important distinction, however: the first step, the slim iPhone Air, is already a real product. The reported 2026 foldable iPhone and a radically redesigned 2027 anniversary model remain unconfirmed. For buyers, that means the roadmap is exciting, but it is not yet a reason to spend money on a product Apple has not announced.

What Apple’s reported three-year iPhone plan actually means
“Apple’s three-year plan” is not an official Apple program or published product schedule. It is shorthand for reporting that Apple may be preparing a sequence of more distinctive iPhone designs:

The original framing came from The Verge, while later summaries from MacRumors described the same broad sequence. Repeated reporting does not make every detail confirmed: several publications may ultimately be relying on the same source or analyst interpretation.

The iPhone became mature, not irrelevant
Calling recent iPhones “boring” is a statement about consumer perception, not a technical verdict. The basic slab-phone design has been refined for years, while annual improvements have focused on cameras, processors, displays, battery performance, connectivity, satellite features, and software.
Those changes can be useful without producing the visual shock associated with the original iPhone, the iPhone X, or the Dynamic Island. A modern iPhone is also fast, durable, and supported for years. If an owner’s current phone still works well, another improved camera or faster chip may not justify replacing it immediately.
Apple’s challenge is therefore less “the iPhone stopped innovating” than “mature hardware gives people fewer reasons to upgrade every year.” A new form factor can provide a more obvious reason to buy.

2025’s iPhone Air was the opening move
The iPhone Air is the first concrete part of the reported strategy. Apple’s official iPhone 17 announcement introduced the current generation, and Apple’s US shopping page lists the iPhone 17 from $799 at the time of writing. Prices, configurations, promotions, and carrier requirements can change, so readers should verify the current product page before purchasing.
The Air matters because it moves the conversation away from specifications alone. It represents:
- a thinner, lighter flagship direction;
- a product position between the standard iPhone and Pro models; and
- a design-led upgrade reason rather than another mainly invisible performance improvement.
Thinness also creates engineering trade-offs. A slimmer device can leave less internal room for a battery, camera hardware, cooling, speakers, and structural reinforcement. Those are design tensions, not proof that every iPhone Air configuration has inferior endurance or durability. Only independent testing should establish those outcomes.

2026 could bring Apple’s first foldable iPhone
The most substantial near-term change is a reported book-style foldable rather than a small flip phone. Reporting collected by What Hi-Fi? and Tom’s Guide has associated the device with several possible features:
- a phone-sized outer display that opens into a larger, tablet-like screen;
- Touch ID instead of Face ID;
- a four-camera arrangement;
- eSIM-only operation;
- a less-visible display crease than some existing foldables; and
- a price substantially above conventional iPhone models.
These are reported specifications, not Apple-confirmed facts. As of the latest information covered here, Apple had not published a product name, launch date, price, final specifications, or availability details for the foldable.
If it arrives, the foldable could change what an iPhone is for. A larger open display could be useful for reading, multitasking, video, gaming, and productivity while retaining more portability when closed. That would be a genuine break from the familiar annual cycle.
It would not automatically be a better phone for everyone. Buyers could face:
- a much higher purchase price;
- more complicated hinge and display mechanics;
- greater repair complexity and potentially higher accidental-damage costs;
- compromises involving thickness, weight, cameras, battery capacity, or biometrics;
- uncertain app optimization; and
- limited first-generation supply or availability.
Until Apple publishes warranty, AppleCare+, and repair terms, it is not responsible to estimate ownership costs. For an expensive mechanical device, those details may matter as much as the screen itself.
2027 is the anniversary gamble
The original iPhone launched in 2007, making 2027 its 20th anniversary. Reports have connected that milestone with a major redesign that could be marketed using the shorthand “iPhone 20,” although that name is not confirmed.

Reported concepts include curved glass, extremely thin bezels, a more continuous all-glass appearance, new internal architecture, and possibly two sizes. Some reporting also places a second-generation foldable in the same broader period.
This is the least certain part of the roadmap. Reports and analyst claims conflict over whether the most ambitious all-glass concept remains on track, has been scaled back, or has been abandoned. The sensible interpretation is that Apple may be exploring a major anniversary design—not that a specific curved-glass iPhone is guaranteed.
The important question is not whether Apple will definitely ship an all-glass model. It is how much of the anniversary story reflects a stable product strategy and how much reflects evolving prototypes, supply-chain information, and speculation.
Apple may also spread iPhone launches across the year
Some reporting points to a split release schedule rather than one simultaneous iPhone family launch. High-end models—including a possible foldable—could remain in the traditional fall window, while standard or lower-cost models might follow in spring 2027. Tom’s Guide’s summary describes the reported change.
Such a schedule could spread Apple’s marketing, revenue, and engineering workload across the year. It would also complicate buying decisions. “The new iPhone” might no longer mean that every model becomes available at the same time, and buying a standard model could mean choosing between a current phone and a newer high-end design arriving months later.
Release timing is among the most volatile parts of Apple reporting. Treat a reported schedule as a possibility, not a shipping promise.

Why would Apple change course?
Apple has not publicly explained a three-year redesign strategy, but several commercial and product reasons are plausible.

A mature category needs visible differentiation
Once conventional screens, cameras, chips, and software are highly capable, design becomes a more valuable way to distinguish a new model. A thinner phone or foldable display is easier to see and feel than a modest processor improvement.
Apple needs stronger upgrade reasons
Long software support and capable older iPhones can encourage owners to wait. A radically different form factor may persuade people to replace a working phone when another incremental update would not.
A foldable could create a premium tier
A costly foldable could raise Apple’s average selling price and appeal to buyers who want the most unusual iPhone available. That is a business opportunity, not evidence that demand will be strong or that the product will improve sales.
Competitors have already used form factor as a differentiator
Samsung, Google, and Chinese manufacturers have used foldables and unusual designs to stand out. Apple’s reported delay may reflect a preference for entering after the technology, manufacturing process, and user experience are mature enough for its standards.

The roadmap has been linked in reporting to hardware chief John Ternus, who is widely viewed as a possible future Apple CEO. That is useful context, but it does not prove that the plan is a personal leadership project or that any particular design will ship. MacRumors has reported on that connection.

What the roadmap means for your money
A redesign can create upgrade pressure even when your current phone remains perfectly usable. The financially sensible question is not “Which iPhone is newest?” but “What problem am I paying to solve?”
Upgrade now when:
- your phone is damaged, unsupported, or failing;
- you need better battery life, storage, or camera performance now;
- you prefer proven slab-phone hardware;
- a trade-in or carrier promotion materially lowers the cost; or
- you do not want to pay a likely premium for first-generation foldable hardware.
Wait when:
- your current iPhone works well;
- your main motivation is a visible design change;
- you are specifically interested in a foldable or anniversary redesign;
- you can tolerate uncertain timing and high launch prices; or
- you would regret buying immediately before a major product-cycle shift.
Consider a battery replacement when:
- your main complaint is reduced battery capacity;
- the phone remains fast and receives the software you need; and
- the display, cameras, storage, and physical condition are otherwise satisfactory.
Apple provides official battery-service information. A battery replacement may be a better bridge to a future redesign than financing a phone you do not urgently need.
Be careful with financing, trade-ins, and leasing
Apple’s US buying routes include outright purchase, carrier financing, trade-in credit, and Apple Upgrade. Apple announced Apple Upgrade in the United States on July 28, 2026.

These are examples, not universal prices. A lease is not the same as owning the phone: compare total payments, end-of-term choices, coverage, taxes, and trade-in assumptions. Apple’s upgrade information explains eligibility and how AppleCare+ is handled.
Trade-in advertising can also make a future upgrade look cheaper than it is. Apple’s buying page advertises potential credit of roughly $830 to $1,100 depending on the eligible device and offer. The actual amount varies by model, condition, configuration, country, and promotion. Do not treat the maximum figure as a typical saving; check the value for your exact phone.
The safest way to think about the rumored products
Use a simple evidence hierarchy:
- Apple-confirmed: official announcements, product pages, prices, and support terms.
- Named-outlet reporting: claims attributed to publications such as Bloomberg, The Verge, or MacRumors.
- Analyst or supply-chain prediction: useful context but vulnerable to changes and interpretation.
- Unverified speculation: concept imagery, anonymous claims, and naming guesses.
That hierarchy matters because the three roadmap stages do not have equal certainty. The iPhone Air is observable reality. The foldable is a heavily reported possibility. The 2027 anniversary phone is a more speculative design direction.
Apple is also unlikely to abandon conventional iPhones completely. The reported redesigns are more plausibly new tiers or additions alongside mainstream models than a total replacement of the familiar iPhone.

Bottom line for buyers
Apple’s reported three-year roadmap is a credible explanation for why the iPhone could soon feel less repetitive: a slim model has already arrived, a foldable is widely expected, and a 20th-anniversary redesign is being discussed. But only the first step is confirmed.
If your current phone solves your needs, waiting is reasonable—especially if you want a foldable or a dramatic redesign. If your phone is failing, buy the proven model that fixes the immediate problem rather than paying for an uncertain future. Apple’s plan is exciting because it could give shoppers genuinely different kinds of iPhone. It is not yet a reason to treat rumors as a purchase decision.
