Apple said tariffs added about $800 million to its costs in fiscal Q3 2025, the quarter ended June 28. On its July 31, 2025 earnings call, the company forecast about $1.1 billion in tariff-related costs for fiscal Q4, assuming tariff rates and policies stayed unchanged and no new tariffs were imposed. That was a forecast of added costs—not a prediction that net income would fall by $1.1 billion.
The figures describe a 2025 earnings update, not Apple’s current 2026 guidance. Subsequent reporting put the September-quarter cost at about $1.1 billion, while Apple later reported tariff refunds that benefited its fiscal Q3 2026 results.
What Apple said, and which quarters it meant
Apple’s fiscal calendar can make the headline easy to misread. Its fiscal Q3 2025 was the April–June quarter, ending June 28, 2025. Fiscal Q4 was the July–September quarter, ending September 27—not the October–December calendar quarter. Apple reported its June-quarter results on July 31, 2025.

The latter estimate assumed no changes to existing tariff rates, policies or applications, and no new tariffs. It was management guidance under those conditions, not an expense already booked when the forecast was made.

Apple had previously estimated about $900 million in tariff costs for the June quarter; the later estimate of approximately $800 million was lower. Tariff policy was changing, so the figures should be understood as estimates tied to the information and assumptions available at each point.
What an $800 million cost means for Apple’s finances
A tariff cost is not automatically the same as a reduction in net income. Duties can raise the cost of imported goods and put pressure on product gross margin. The eventual effect on earnings depends on whether Apple absorbs the cost, changes prices or discounts, negotiates with suppliers, shifts production, or benefits from other factors such as product mix and currency movements. Taxes and timing also affect the bottom line.
Apple’s official fiscal Q3 2025 financial statements reported $94.036 billion in revenue, $23.434 billion in net income and diluted earnings per share of $1.57. The $800 million tariff estimate equaled about 0.85% of quarterly revenue, or about 3.4% of net income as a rough scale comparison—not an accounting measure of profit lost. Product cost of sales was $43.620 billion, and total cost of sales was $50.318 billion.

Management reported a 46.5% gross margin for the quarter and said sequential margin pressure of roughly 60 basis points was primarily due to the approximately $800 million tariff cost. The exposure was concentrated in hardware rather than services, which do not face the same direct import-duty exposure. These figures show why tariffs mattered to margins without proving that the entire cost flowed dollar-for-dollar through to net income.
Which tariffs were behind the cost?
Apple’s Form 10-Q for the quarter described additional U.S. tariffs announced beginning in fiscal Q2 2025 that affected imports from countries and regions including China, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam and the European Union. It also warned that policy could change, including through sector-specific measures and potential action involving semiconductors and related products.
On the earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said most of the tariffs Apple paid in the June quarter were the earlier IEEPA tariffs on China. So the $800 million was not a generic bill covering every possible future tariff equally. Exposure varied by product, origin, applicable tariff and timing.

In general, U.S. import duties are collected from the importer of record. That legal obligation does not settle who ultimately bears the economic cost. Apple, a supplier, a retailer or a customer could absorb some of it, or the burden could be shared.
Why Apple expected costs to rise in fiscal Q4
The $1.1 billion estimate reflected expected tariff costs during the next fiscal quarter under the policies then in place. It was conditional, not a guaranteed ceiling: new tariffs or changes in rates or applications could have altered the result. Inventory already in the supply chain, the pace of imports, product demand and changes in sourcing could also affect when costs appeared.
A company can sometimes bring goods into a market before a duty takes effect or sell inventory already there. That can reduce near-term exposure or shift its timing, but it does not necessarily remove the underlying cost. Product launches and seasonal sales volumes can also change how tariffs affect a quarter’s total costs and margins.

How Apple was changing U.S.-bound production
Apple described supply-chain optimization as its main way to mitigate tariff exposure. Cook said that, for the U.S. market in the relevant quarter, the majority of iPhones were expected to have India as their country of origin. He said Vietnam would be the country of origin for almost all iPads, Macs, Apple Watches and AirPods sold in the United States. Those statements concerned U.S.-bound products; they did not mean Apple had moved all global production out of China or that most devices were being made in the United States.
Shifting assembly can help reduce exposure to tariffs aimed at one country, but it is not immunity from tariffs. A finished device assembled in India or Vietnam may use components made elsewhere, and the tariff result depends on the product and applicable rules for determining origin. Apple’s filing also identified tariffs affecting India and Vietnam. Relocation can bring added logistics costs, capacity constraints and supply-chain complexity, as well as reduce some China-specific risk.

The June quarter was strong despite the added costs. Apple reported $94.0 billion in revenue, up 10% year over year; iPhone revenue was $44.6 billion, up 13%. Net income rose to $23.4 billion from $21.4 billion, and diluted EPS increased 12% to $1.57.

There was a potential short-term demand boost as well as a cost burden. Apple’s management estimated that customers accelerating purchases ahead of possible tariff-related price increases contributed about one percentage point to the quarter’s 10% revenue growth. That is management’s estimate, not an independently measured causal figure. If customers brought purchases forward, it could lift one quarter while leaving fewer purchases for a later period; it does not by itself demonstrate durable new demand.
What happened after the forecast?
| Date or period | Tariff-related development |
|---|---|
| May 2025 | Apple had estimated roughly $900 million in costs for the June quarter. |
| July 31, 2025 | Apple said fiscal Q3 costs were about $800 million and forecast about $1.1 billion for fiscal Q4 under unchanged tariff conditions. |
| October 2025 reporting | Later reporting said the fiscal Q4 tariff cost was approximately $1.1 billion, in line with the forecast, and that Apple expected approximately $1.4 billion in the following three-month period. Associated Press coverage |
| July 2026 | Apple reported that tariff refunds benefited fiscal Q3 2026 gross margin by about two percentage points and diluted EPS by $0.11. Apple’s results release |
The 2026 refunds are later context, not evidence that Apple’s 2025 costs were simply erased. The refunds may relate to different periods, duties or legal changes; they should not be treated as a one-for-one reversal of the earlier expenses.
What this meant for customers and investors
For customers, a tariff forecast did not translate mechanically into a specific iPhone price increase. Apple could absorb some costs, alter sourcing, adjust discounts or prices, or combine several responses. Without an explicit company attribution, it is not possible to say that a particular price change was caused solely by the $1.1 billion forecast.
For investors, the key distinction is between a meaningful cost and its eventual effect on earnings. The cost could pressure hardware margins, while sourcing changes and purchase timing could soften or shift the impact. Tariff rates, country of origin, product mix, pricing and possible refunds all mattered. The longer-term challenge was balancing diversification away from China-centered production against the expense and complexity of building alternative supply chains.
