Apple’s M4 Mac mini and Mac Studio are harder to buy in some configurations, but the evidence does not prove that Apple is deliberately restricting M4 supply solely to make room for M5 models. Reports point to a combination of severe memory shortages, stronger demand for Macs used with local AI tools, and possible product-transition planning. As of August 18, 2026, Apple’s U.S. store still listed the M4/M4 Pro Mac mini from $799 and the M4 Max/M3 Ultra Mac Studio from $2,499.
For buyers, the practical rule is simple: buy an available M4 system if you need it and its exact configuration meets your workload; wait if the purchase is optional and the required memory configuration is unavailable. Waiting for M5 may improve your options, but Apple has not confirmed an M5 Mac mini or Mac Studio launch date, specifications, or price.

Apple’s product pages continue to identify the current desktop lineup as the M4 and M4 Pro Mac mini and the M4 Max and M3 Ultra Mac Studio. The following is a U.S. snapshot from August 18, 2026; availability and pricing can differ by country and change quickly.

There is an important distinction between a product page and the buying configurator. Apple’s product pages can show the theoretical range for an entire product family even when a particular chip, memory, or storage combination is temporarily unavailable or has been removed from the store. Before paying, check the live Apple Mac store for the exact configuration and delivery date.

Which configurations have disappeared?
MacRumors reported that Apple had removed or restricted several higher-memory and lower-storage options. These changes are time-sensitive, so treat them as a snapshot rather than a permanent specification change.

These reported removals explain why the Mac mini’s U.S. starting price effectively rose from $599 to $799. Apple did not simply add $200 to every unchanged Mac mini configuration; it removed the 256GB entry model. Bloomberg described the result as an effective price increase caused by the loss of the cheaper configuration. M4 Pro Mac mini pricing was not affected in the same way because those models already started with 512GB storage.

The clearest documented explanation is pressure in the global memory market, reportedly linked to companies building AI servers. Apple was also reported to expect substantially higher memory costs. Apple CEO Tim Cook reportedly said that Mac mini and Mac Studio supply could take “several months” to reach supply-demand balance.

The shortage matters especially for Apple silicon Macs because memory is unified: it is shared by the CPU, GPU, and other parts of the system rather than being treated as a conventional removable RAM module. The exact configuration is therefore central to the computer you buy. If a high-capacity memory supply is constrained, Apple cannot necessarily solve the problem by shipping the same Mac later with a user-installed memory upgrade.
That makes memory different from storage. If a 512GB internal SSD is insufficient, an external SSD can often provide additional working space for documents, media, project files, and backups. External storage is not an equivalent substitute for insufficient unified memory. Memory capacity should receive priority when you regularly use:
- Large local AI models or agentic development tools.
- Virtual machines and containers.
- Large video timelines or demanding motion-graphics projects.
- 3D scenes and rendering workloads.
- Large photo libraries actively edited in professional applications.
- Several memory-intensive professional applications at the same time.
Apple has also reportedly underestimated demand from customers using the Mac mini and Mac Studio for local AI and agentic tools. That does not mean every shortage is caused by AI buyers. Video editors, developers, musicians, 3D artists, offices replacing older Intel Macs, and small businesses running local automation can all contribute to demand. However, it helps explain why the most attractive configurations are often the ones with more unified memory.
Where possible M5 plans fit into the story
Apple has not officially announced an M5 Mac mini or M5 Mac Studio release date. Reports have discussed a possible desktop refresh, with earlier forecasts suggesting that M5 Max and M5 Ultra Mac Studio models could arrive before or around mid-2026 and that M5 and M5 Pro Mac mini models might follow later in 2026, potentially around September or October. Those dates were forecasts, not confirmed schedules.

Later reporting summarized by MacRumors said Apple was preparing to refresh every Mac it sells over the following two years. That supports the existence of a broader product roadmap, but it does not establish a specific launch date or show that Apple is intentionally starving M4 inventory.
It is useful to separate the evidence:
Confirmed or directly observable
- Apple’s U.S. store still listed current M4 Mac mini and M4 Max/M3 Ultra Mac Studio families as of August 18, 2026.
- Apple’s store listed the Mac mini from $799 and the Mac Studio from $2,499 at that time.
- Some memory and storage configurations were reported as removed or difficult to obtain.
- Apple reportedly warned of memory-cost pressure and several months of supply-demand imbalance.
Reported but unconfirmed
- Apple may refresh the Mac mini and Mac Studio with M5-family chips.
- The timing could fall later in 2026 for some models, according to forecasts.
- Apple may be planning a broader Mac refresh over the next two years.
Not established by the available evidence
- An exact M5 Mac mini or Mac Studio launch date.
- Final M5 chip, memory, or storage options.
- M5 pricing.
- That Apple has stopped producing all M4 models.
- That every M4 shortage is caused by the upcoming refresh.
Is Apple clearing out M4 inventory?
A product transition could affect availability in ordinary ways. Apple might reduce orders for configurations expected to be discontinued, retailers might sell existing stock without replenishing it, and buyers might delay purchases unevenly across models. Apple could also prioritize scarce components for newer or more profitable products. Those are plausible industry mechanisms, not confirmed descriptions of Apple’s internal decisions.
There is evidence consistent with an M5 transition: reports of future M5 desktop plans, configurations disappearing before a possible successor, and long delivery estimates for some models. But the pattern is also consistent with a memory-supply crisis. High-memory configurations were disproportionately affected, Apple was reportedly dealing with higher memory costs, and the company was said to have underestimated demand for local AI use.

Should you buy an M4 Mac mini now?
Buy now when the configuration is available and the work is urgent
An M4 Mac mini remains a sensible purchase if you need a compact desktop now, already own a monitor and peripherals, and the available memory is sufficient for the years you expect to keep it. It is particularly suitable for office work, everyday productivity, coding, and light-to-moderate creative work.
For many buyers, 16GB or 24GB can be adequate. The decision becomes more consequential if you run virtual machines, local AI models, professional media workflows, or multiple demanding applications. Choose memory for the workload rather than assuming a future software update will make a smaller configuration sufficient.
Wait when the missing configuration is the reason you are shopping
Waiting is more defensible if you specifically need more memory than the available mini offers, cannot justify the effective $799 entry price, or can comfortably use an existing computer for several months. A possible M5 model may provide a better performance-per-watt profile or new neural-processing capabilities, but those improvements and prices are not confirmed.
Do not wait solely because a rumored launch date appears online. Waiting guarantees neither a particular month nor a lower price.

Should you buy an M4 Mac Studio now?
Buy now if you need Studio-class capability
The Mac Studio makes more sense than the mini when your work benefits from sustained performance, a higher-end GPU, greater memory capacity, extensive connectivity, or support for multiple displays. Apple says the Mac Studio supports Thunderbolt 5, up to five displays with M4 Max, and up to eight displays with M3 Ultra.
It can be an appropriate tool for professional video, 3D, audio, software development, local AI, and multi-display workflows. If the exact configuration you need is in stock through Apple or a reputable retailer, delaying could leave you with fewer high-memory M4 choices.
Wait if the Studio is optional
Wait for a possible M5 Mac Studio if your current Mac can handle the workload, the desired M4 configuration is unavailable, and you are willing to accept unknown specifications, pricing, and memory options. A future model could be better, but there is no confirmed evidence that it will be cheaper or offer more memory.

Consider a different configuration when the bottleneck is flexible:
- Need more storage, not more memory: An external SSD may be a practical way to add capacity without paying for a scarce internal-storage configuration.
- Need moderate professional performance: An M4 Pro Mac mini may meet the workload without the cost and size of a Mac Studio.
- Need portability: A MacBook Pro may substitute for a desktop if its performance, display support, and ports fit the job.
- Need very high memory: Do not downgrade memory merely to obtain immediate delivery. A smaller-memory model can become an expensive mistake because memory cannot generally be upgraded later.
How to shop without overpaying
- Check the exact specification. Confirm chip, unified-memory capacity, SSD capacity, keyboard layout, region, and new or refurbished condition.
- Check delivery, not just stock language. “In stock” can mean a unit is available somewhere in a distribution network; confirm the actual delivery date or store-pickup date.
- Compare Apple with authorized retailers. Apple’s online store can lack a configuration that a retailer still has. Compare the identical specification, not just the model name.
- Check local pickup. Apple says store pickup availability varies by location and configuration. Its buying pages provide delivery and pickup information for specific configurations.
- Consider Apple Certified Refurbished. The official refurbished Mac store may offer an M4 system at a lower price, but inventory changes frequently. Verify the exact memory, storage, warranty, and return terms before checkout.
- Avoid scarcity premiums. Do not assume a discontinued or temporarily unavailable configuration is collectible or strategically valuable. Be cautious with inflated reseller prices, gray-market imports, no-return marketplace listings, and systems with unclear warranty status.
- Compare trade-in economics. Apple’s Trade In program can reduce the effective purchase cost, but compare its estimate with a private-sale price and keep your old Mac until the replacement is fully configured if continuity matters.
Financing can spread payments, but it does not make an inflated scarcity price economical. Use Apple’s published financing or installment information only after deciding that the exact computer is worth its total price.

Availability is configuration-specific, not a simple verdict that “the Mac mini” or “the Mac Studio” is out of stock. Check the live configurator for your country on Apple’s Mac mini buying page and Mac Studio buying page before making a decision.
