That deal applied to the 16GB memory/256GB SSD model, not every M4 Mac mini. The available evidence does not confirm that $479 is still available on September 13, 2026, so verify the live listing, seller, condition, shipping, tax, and checkout total before buying.
Price-status note: The $479 figure is a time-stamped historical deal price, not a verified current price. The original report also listed delivery estimates that depended on location and inventory.
What the $479 Mac mini deal included
AppleInsider reported Amazon’s U.S. price of $479 for the 2024 Mac mini with:
- Apple M4 chip with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU
- 16GB unified memory
- 256GB SSD
Apple launched that configuration at $599, making the reported discount $120, or approximately 20%. B&H was listed at $499 in the same December 20, 2025 deal report. Before considering any listing, confirm that it is a new retail unit rather than refurbished, open-box, or marketplace stock. Also check whether the seller is reputable, whether the product carries the expected warranty, and whether a coupon or membership requirement is being applied. Sales tax, shipping, and seller-specific return policies can change the effective price.

These figures came from the December 20, 2025 roundup and are not current-price guarantees. A separate late-November 2025 Black Friday roundup listed additional prices, including $479, $649, $669, $869, and $1,199, but those numbers are likewise historical. Do not use an old “starting at” price to compare today’s options without checking the exact configuration.
What you get for $479
The base M4 Mac mini is a small desktop computer—Apple described the 2024 redesign as roughly 5 by 5 inches—but it is not a complete computer setup. You supply the monitor, keyboard, mouse or trackpad, and usually a suitable display cable.

- 16-core Neural Engine
- Hardware-accelerated ray tracing
- Media support for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, ProRes RAW, and AV1
- Two front USB-C ports supporting USB 3 at up to 10Gbps
- Three rear Thunderbolt 4/USB4 ports supporting up to 40Gbps
- HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet configurable to 10Gb Ethernet, and a 3.5mm headphone jack
- Built-in speaker
Apple lists the M4 configuration as supporting up to three displays, subject to the specific resolution and port arrangement: two displays up to 6K at 60Hz over Thunderbolt, plus a third display up to 5K at 60Hz over Thunderbolt or 4K at 60Hz over HDMI. Check Apple’s specification page for the exact arrangement relevant to your monitors.
The biggest catch is the 256GB SSD
The $479 price is attractive because it is attached to the least expensive storage configuration. A 256GB internal drive can fill quickly after accounting for macOS, applications, developer tools, games, local photos, music, and video projects.
The internal storage configuration is selected when you buy the Mac mini and is not a straightforward user-upgrade path. Memory is also effectively fixed. That makes the cheapest model a good value only if you are comfortable managing storage externally or keeping most files in the cloud or on a network drive.
Buy the 256GB model if:
- Your work is mainly browsing, office tasks, schoolwork, streaming, coding, or general home use.
- You already own a suitable monitor and peripherals.
- You are comfortable adding an external SSD later.
- You do not expect to keep large games, virtual machines, video libraries, or project files locally.
Pay more for 512GB if:
- You will store a photo library, Xcode projects, virtual machines, Adobe applications, games, or video projects locally.
- You want fewer external drives and less file management.
- The price difference is reasonable over the computer’s expected service life.
An external USB-C, USB4, or Thunderbolt SSD can be a practical alternative to paying for more internal storage. For sustained video editing or large development workloads, prioritize a reputable drive with appropriate sustained-write performance and a warranty rather than the cheapest flash drive.
Should you choose more memory?
The base model’s 16GB is appropriate for ordinary productivity and moderate creative work. Consider 24GB or 32GB if you routinely use Docker, virtual machines, large codebases, local AI tools, or many memory-intensive applications simultaneously. Since memory cannot realistically be upgraded later, paying for the right capacity at purchase can be more economical than replacing the computer early.
M4 versus M4 Pro
The M4 Pro is a different performance tier, not simply a storage upgrade. Apple lists M4 Pro configurations with a 12-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB unified memory, and Thunderbolt 5, along with higher memory and storage options. See Apple’s full specifications for configuration details.

The base M4 is the sensible choice for web work, office applications, education, coding, media playback, photo organization, and moderate music or photo production. M4 Pro becomes easier to justify for sustained compilation, professional video workflows, substantial parallel processing, 3D work, GPU-heavy tasks, or projects requiring more memory and Thunderbolt 5.

Do not pay the Pro premium simply because it sounds more future-proof. Match the chip, memory, and connectivity to a workload that will actually benefit from them.

A $479 computer is not necessarily a $479 desktop. If you do not already have the necessary equipment, budget for:
- Monitor or compatible television
- Keyboard and mouse or trackpad
- HDMI or USB-C display cable, depending on the monitor
- External SSD if 256GB is insufficient
- Optional hub or dock for card readers, USB-A devices, or additional connectivity
- Optional AppleCare+
Apple’s October 2024 launch announcement listed historical U.S. accessory prices of $99 for Magic Keyboard, $129 for Magic Trackpad, and $79 for Magic Mouse. Verify current prices before using them in your budget; less expensive Logitech and other third-party peripherals can reduce the total considerably.
A hub is not automatically necessary. The Mac mini already includes front USB-C ports, rear Thunderbolt/USB4 ports, HDMI, Ethernet, and a headphone jack. Buy a dock only for a genuine connectivity or cable-management need.

Where to check
- Apple’s Mac mini store is the official source for new configurations, but direct pricing may not beat a retailer sale.
- Amazon may offer changing inventory and fast delivery, but verify the seller, condition, fulfillment, warranty, and return terms.
- B&H Photo is another established retailer; check destination-specific shipping, tax, and stock.
- Apple Certified Refurbished stock can be worthwhile when priced meaningfully below comparable new hardware, but configurations change quickly. The available evidence confirms a refurbished 16GB/256GB M4 listing but does not establish a current price.
At checkout, confirm the exact chip, memory, storage, condition, seller, and final total. “Starting at $479” can mean only the 256GB model qualifies, while the 512GB version costs substantially more or the advertised unit has sold out.
Who should buy the deal?
Buy the base M4 Mac mini at $479 if the price is genuinely live, the unit is new and correctly configured, and you already have a display and peripherals. It is a strong low-cost desktop for students, home-office users, developers, general users, and light-to-moderate creative workloads.
Skip it or compare alternatives if you need portability, a built-in display, webcam, keyboard, battery, or user-replaceable storage and memory. A laptop may have a higher purchase price but can be cheaper than building a complete desktop setup when you need to work away from a desk.
Gamers should also check individual game and anti-cheat compatibility rather than assuming that the M4 Mac mini is a universal gaming PC. Buyers with professional video, 3D, heavy compilation, large virtual machines, or demanding parallel workloads should compare the M4 Pro.
