Apple’s low-cost Mac notebook prediction came true, but the original $599 price did not last. Apple announced the MacBook Neo on March 4, 2026, at a U.S. starting price of $599; by June 25, it had raised that starting price to $699. As of August 18, 2026, the Neo is a real entry-level Mac—not a rumored product—and its value depends on whether its 8GB of memory, 256GB of storage, and macOS fit your needs.
That makes the original argument about rising Windows PC prices more complicated. A Neo may be a better buy than a poorly configured Windows laptop, but it is not automatically cheaper than every Windows alternative or the right replacement for every Windows user.
From a $599 prediction to a $699 Mac
On August 12, 2025, Computerworld published an opinion article arguing that rising PC costs and the move away from Windows 10 could make a lower-priced Mac more attractive. It described a rumored Apple notebook with an A-series mobile processor and a price near $599. The screen was then rumored to be about 12.9 inches. Apple’s support documentation confirms the key specifications. This is an entry-level Mac designed around a lower starting price, not a less expensive version of every MacBook Air feature.

Apple’s MacBook Neo technical specifications are the place to confirm the precise port descriptions, wireless standards, dimensions, battery estimates, charger details, and any regional differences before ordering. Do not assume that the Neo’s connections or display support match a MacBook Air. Its confirmed one-external-display limit matters if you regularly use a multi-monitor desk.

Why an A-series chip matters
The A18 Pro is an A-series processor, the family associated with Apple’s mobile devices, rather than an M-series Mac chip. That distinction helps explain where the Neo sits in Apple’s lineup: it is a less expensive entry point for everyday computing, while the MacBook Air remains the more capable and flexible option for buyers who need more performance headroom.
Using an A-series design may have helped Apple keep the Neo’s price lower, but Apple has not publicly disclosed its full product cost structure. Treat that as a reasonable interpretation of the product strategy, not a confirmed explanation of the company’s internal costs.
For browser use, documents, email, streaming, video calls, and light photo editing, the Neo’s chip may be ample. A processor name alone cannot tell you whether a specialized application will work well, though. Before switching, check the current requirements for your development tools, plugins, virtualization setup, engineering software, games, and other must-have apps.
What “Windows PC prices quietly rise” does—and does not—show
The 2025 opinion article cited an NPI analysis that reportedly found price increases of roughly 30% to 50% in some PC configurations. That is a claim about some configurations attributed to that analysis, not evidence that every Windows laptop became 30% to 50% more expensive. The article connected PC costs to Windows 11 migration, but the cited material does not establish a universal Windows 11 surcharge.

For a household, school, or business replacing a Windows 10 machine, the costs can involve more than the laptop itself: hardware that no longer meets needs, migration time, paid applications, support decisions, security tools, and compatibility work. Windows itself is generally included with a new PC; it is inaccurate to describe every Windows buyer as paying a new, universal operating-system upgrade tax.
The original article’s broader total-cost argument is useful, but its conclusion depends on the buyer. A person who already owns Windows software and peripherals may spend less by staying on Windows. An organization moving a fleet has to account for identity, management, security, applications, deployment, and support on either platform. Neither a Mac’s purchase price nor a Windows sticker price settles those costs by itself.
Is a $699 MacBook Neo cheaper than a Windows laptop?
Only against a defined alternative. Compare a complete configuration and the work it needs to do, rather than comparing the Mac logo with the cheapest Windows listing. Look at:

- Up-front price: Compare current prices for machines you can actually buy, in the same country and on the same date.
- Memory and storage: The Neo starts with 8GB unified memory and 256GB SSD storage. Some Windows models at a similar price may offer more of either; others may have weaker processors, displays, or construction.
- Screen, battery, and build: A lower sticker price is less meaningful if the display, battery life, keyboard, or overall build does not suit your daily use.
- Ports and displays: Count the ports and screens you need, then include any hub, dock, or adapter in the cost.
- Software compatibility: Budget for Mac versions, replacements, subscriptions, or workarounds if you cannot use a Windows-only application on macOS.
- Support, repairs, and replacement: Check warranty and service terms, expected repair costs, and how long you expect to keep the computer. Do not assume a particular lifespan or resale value without evidence.
- Storage beyond the laptop: A cloud plan or external drive adds cost and may be less convenient than enough internal storage.
A $699 Neo could be a stronger choice than a $600 Windows laptop with a poor display or limited performance. But a discounted Windows machine with 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, and the ports you need may be better value for someone who relies on Windows or wants more memory and storage at purchase. Apple also compared the Neo with an Intel Core Ultra 5 Windows 11 PC configured with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD in its launch materials. That is an Apple-selected comparison, not an independent survey of every laptop near the price.

The biggest question: is 8GB of memory enough?
The Neo’s 8GB of unified memory is its most important practical compromise. Unified memory is shared by the processor and graphics; it is not a direct one-to-one comparison with a Windows PC that has 8GB of system RAM and separate graphics memory.
For one person mostly using a browser, documents, email, streaming, and video calls, 8GB may be adequate. The constraint becomes more relevant when you keep many tabs open alongside Teams or Slack, run creative applications, use virtual machines, or work with large files. Buyers planning to keep a computer for years should consider whether that workload is likely to grow. Do not buy the Neo on the assumption that its memory can be upgraded later; verify the available configurations and Apple’s documentation before purchase.
The base 256GB SSD can also fill quickly with photo libraries, games, downloaded media, and work files. External storage or cloud storage can help, but it brings extra cost and may not solve every need for space to install applications or keep files available offline.
Who is the Neo a good fit for?
- Students: A strong candidate if coursework is mainly in a browser, documents, and video calls. Check school software requirements first, especially for specialist courses.
- Families and first-time Mac buyers: Worth considering for everyday shared use when the household is comfortable with macOS and does not need extensive expansion.
- iPhone users: A more natural fit if you already rely on Apple services and value using devices together, though ecosystem convenience should not substitute for checking your apps and storage needs.
- People replacing an aging computer: Potentially appealing if a new, simple laptop is the goal and the work is light. Windows 10 users should make a transition plan, but that alone does not mean they must switch to Mac.
- Small-business workers: Consider it for browser-based, document-heavy work only after confirming business applications, VPNs, security clients, peripherals, and management requirements.
Who should look elsewhere?
- Windows-dependent users: If you rely on a Windows-only application, hardware utility, or workflow, confirm a satisfactory Mac alternative before buying. A browser version or virtual machine may not reproduce the full Windows experience.
- Developers with specific toolchains: Check requirements for x86 virtualization, specialized tooling, containers, and test environments. Compatibility and performance depend on the exact workflow.
- Gamers: A Windows laptop may be a safer choice if your games, anti-cheat systems, or accessories require Windows. Do not assume that a game available on one platform is available or equivalent on the other.
- Creators and heavy multitaskers: Large video projects, professional 3D work, and demanding multitasking may justify the extra cost of a more capable machine with more memory headroom.
- Multi-monitor users: The Neo supports one external display. Check whether that satisfies your desk setup before purchase.
- Buyers wanting easy upgrades or broad connectivity: Compare repair and upgrade options and count the adapters you would need. A USB-C hub adds cost and clutter.

What the price increase changes
The Neo launched at the price the 2025 prediction anticipated, then rose by $100 in the United States. That weakens the original argument that Apple had a $599 answer to rising PC prices, but it does not erase the Neo’s role as Apple’s least expensive Mac notebook. It also illustrates why a single price snapshot is not a durable buying conclusion: component costs can affect Apple and PC makers alike.
At $699, the decision should rest less on the idea that the Neo is automatically a bargain and more on fit. If its everyday performance, macOS, screen, and ecosystem are what you want—and 8GB/256GB are enough—it can be a reasonable entry into Mac. If you need more memory, Windows compatibility, more ports, or multiple monitors, compare other configurations before paying.
Before you buy: a short checklist
- List the applications, games, peripherals, and school or work tools you must use; confirm each works on macOS.
- Estimate how much memory and storage you need now, including browser tabs, photos, media, and work files.
- Confirm your external-display setup and port requirements against Apple’s current technical specifications.
- Price any hub, external drive, paid Mac software, or cloud storage you would need; include those in your comparison.
- Compare the Neo with a similarly priced Windows laptop, a discounted MacBook Air, or a refurbished Mac using the same needs and time horizon.
- Check current local pricing, warranty, repair, and return terms. U.S. launch and price-change figures do not necessarily apply in other regions.
Bottom line: The 2025 article correctly anticipated Apple’s move into lower-priced notebooks, but the MacBook Neo is now a $699 U.S. product rather than a $599 one. It can make sense for light-use buyers who want macOS, but the 8GB memory, 256GB storage, limited display support, and compatibility trade-offs make it a poor universal answer to rising Windows PC costs.
