Apple’s latest disclosures support a mixed conclusion: the company continues to invest in inclusive hiring, pay-equity reviews, accessibility, employee networks and racial-equity programs, while some workforce categories have changed modestly. But the available data do not prove broad-based improvement in senior leadership, technical roles, advancement, retention or employee experience.

The newest concrete filing is Apple’s 2024 U.S. Consolidated EEO-1 report, based on a workforce snapshot taken December 14–27, 2024. Apple’s separate diversity webpage provides a current high-level snapshot, but its reporting date is not clearly identified. Those sources should be read together—not treated as proof that Apple has solved its representation gaps.

What Apple currently reports

Apple’s current Inclusion & Diversity webpage lists its global workforce as 35% female and 64% male. The figures do not total 100%, so rounding or unreported categories may account for the difference.

For its U.S. workforce, Apple lists 38% White employees, 32% Asian employees, 15% Hispanic/Latinx employees, 9% Black employees, 3% multiracial employees and 1% Indigenous employees. Those displayed categories total 98%, so they should not be presented as a complete 100% breakdown.

The geographic distinction matters: the gender figure is global, while the race and ethnicity figures are U.S.-specific. They are not one unified demographic profile. Apple’s dashboard also allows users to view overall workforce, leadership, research and development, non-R&D and retail populations, making segmentation more useful than relying on a company-wide average.

What changed from 2023 to 2024?

Apple’s 2024 EEO-1 filing can be compared with its 2023 filing. The reports cover Apple’s U.S. workforce and use broad federal job categories.

Measure 2023 2024 Change
Total U.S. employees 101,379 101,536 +157
Executive/senior-level officials and managers 131 130 -1
First- and mid-level officials and managers 14,124 14,165 +41
Professionals 49,907 51,128 +1,221
Technicians 5,829 5,435 -394

Overall U.S. employment rose by just 157 people, or about 0.15%. That is a stable workforce, not evidence of a major expansion in hiring opportunities. The professional category grew, while the technician category declined, but these classifications are too broad to map directly onto specific Apple functions such as software engineering, hardware engineering or product design.

More importantly, the table does not show the demographic composition within each category. A larger professional workforce is not automatically evidence of greater diversity.

Senior leadership remains the crucial test

The 2024 filing lists 130 employees in the executive/senior-level officials and managers category, compared with 131 in 2023. The category included 22 Hispanic or Latino women, two Black women, four Asian women, 73 White men, 23 Asian men, five Hispanic or Latino men and one man of two or more races. It displayed no Black men in that category.

In 2023, the same category included 75 White men, 21 Asian men, five Hispanic or Latino men, one man of two or more races, 22 Hispanic or Latino women, two Black women and five Asian women, with no Black men displayed.

These small changes do not demonstrate a decisive transformation in Apple’s senior leadership. A movement of one or two employees may reflect ordinary personnel changes, reclassification or other factors rather than a measurable effect from a particular inclusion program.

Leadership representation matters because senior executives influence hiring, promotion, product priorities, compensation and corporate culture. A company may have a diverse overall workforce while decision-making roles remain less representative.

Why technical and R&D representation matters

Apple’s dashboard separates R&D from non-R&D and retail, which is important when evaluating influence and opportunity. Representation in retail or other large workforce groups does not necessarily indicate comparable representation in engineering, research, product leadership or other roles that shape technology and business strategy.

The EEO-1 filing reports 51,128 professionals and 5,435 technicians in 2024. Those categories provide useful workforce structure, but they do not identify individual Apple departments precisely. It would therefore be inaccurate to call all professionals software engineers or all technicians members of one technical team.

The most useful future disclosure would show demographic representation by function and level—for example, R&D, product, operations and retail, separated into entry-level, management and executive roles. That would help readers determine whether gains reach high-influence positions rather than being concentrated in particular parts of the workforce.

Apple’s broader inclusion infrastructure

Apple’s public materials describe several programs and policies:

  • Pay-equity reviews: Apple says it has maintained global gender pay equity since 2017 and achieved U.S. pay equity relating to race, ethnicity and gender.
  • Employee networks: Diversity Network Associations are employee-led groups open to all employees, according to Apple’s careers materials.
  • Inclusive hiring and development: Apple describes workplace programs intended to support inclusion and employee development on its careers page.
  • Racial equity: Apple’s Racial Equity and Justice Initiative focuses on opportunities for communities of color, including education and technology pathways.
  • Accessibility: Apple highlights product and customer-support work involving diverse facial data, accessibility testing and SignTime remote sign-language interpretation in selected countries and languages.
  • HBCU pathways: Apple describes partnerships with historically Black colleges and universities through its New Silicon Initiative.

These activities show institutional infrastructure. They do not, by themselves, establish that inclusion outcomes have improved. To demonstrate results, Apple would need to connect programs with measurable changes in hiring, promotion, retention, employee experience and leadership representation.

What Apple’s pay-equity claim does—and does not—mean

Apple says it reviews total compensation annually with an independent third-party expert and makes adjustments when needed. Its 2024 proxy materials describe an analysis covering base salary, bonuses and stock awards for 100% of employees, using statistical modeling and reviews of business-line gaps. Details appear in Apple’s 2024 proxy statement.

Pay equity generally asks whether employees doing comparable work receive comparable compensation after considering job-related variables. It does not mean every demographic group has the same average pay. It also does not prove equal access to hiring, promotion, high-paying roles, stock-rich positions, influential assignments or senior management.

Accordingly, Apple’s pay-equity statement is relevant evidence about compensation controls, but it is not a substitute for promotion, retention and representation data.

Accessibility is related to inclusion, but not the same measure

Apple presents inclusion as extending beyond employee demographics to the design of products and services. It says Face ID testing considers facial features, skin tones, ages, face shapes and visual abilities. It also highlights SignTime, which provides remote sign-language interpretation for AppleCare and retail customer-care interactions in selected countries and languages.

Those examples are meaningful dimensions of accessibility, and Apple should receive credit for disclosing them as part of its inclusion strategy. However, inclusive product design and workplace diversity measure different outcomes. Strong accessibility work can coexist with unresolved gaps in employee representation or advancement.

What the historical numbers show—and do not show

Apple said in its 2022 proxy materials that the number of U.S. employees from underrepresented communities increased 64% between 2014 and 2020. That is evidence of a long-term gain claimed by Apple, but the comparison ends in 2020. It should not be presented as proof of progress through 2024 or 2026.

The cleanest interpretation is to separate three time periods:

  1. 2014–2020: Apple’s reported historical increase in U.S. employees from underrepresented communities.
  2. 2023–2024: The newest concrete year-over-year EEO-1 comparison, showing a largely stable U.S. workforce and limited change in management categories.
  3. Current snapshot: Apple’s live diversity webpage, which lists headline demographic figures but does not clearly identify its underlying reporting date in the available material.

What the disclosures cannot establish

Apple’s public data do not provide a complete answer to several questions that determine whether a workplace is genuinely inclusive:

  • Do women and racial or ethnic minority employees advance at comparable rates?
  • Are retention and attrition rates comparable across demographic groups?
  • Do employees report belonging, psychological safety and confidence in complaint processes?
  • Who receives mentoring, sponsorship and high-visibility assignments?
  • How are disabled employees and LGBTQ+ employees represented globally and across levels?
  • Are demographic gains reaching R&D, product leadership and executive decision-making?
  • How do outcomes vary by country, business line and job level?

The EEO-1 filing is also not a global diversity report. It covers Apple’s U.S. workforce and does not supply detailed intersectional analysis, employee sentiment or comprehensive promotion and retention outcomes.

Apple’s case, and the limits of that case

Apple can reasonably point to continuing public programs, pay-equity reviews, accessibility work, employee networks, racial-equity initiatives and workforce reporting. The company’s investor values page lists Inclusion & Diversity as a corporate-value area. Apple has not abandoned the subject in its public materials.

Apple also faced shareholder proposals concerning its diversity, equity and inclusion programs in its 2025 proxy materials. The company defended its approach and said the programs served shareholders, employees, communities and Apple’s long-term interests. The proxy dispute provides political and governance context, but it does not prove either that the programs are effective or that they are unlawful. See Apple’s 2025 proxy statement.

The limitation is outcome transparency. Program descriptions and historical gains are not the same as current, segmented evidence. A stronger assessment would require consistent year-over-year data on leadership, R&D, hiring, promotion, attrition, pay and employee experience.

Verdict: incremental progress, not a completed inclusion story

Apple’s latest diversity disclosures justify saying that the company has maintained inclusion infrastructure and may have made incremental progress in selected areas. They do not justify an unqualified claim that Apple is broadly “more inclusive.”

The strongest evidence is Apple’s continuing reporting, pay-equity process, accessibility work and public programs. The weaker evidence concerns recent improvement in senior leadership and technical representation: the 2024 EEO-1 filing shows a nearly unchanged top leadership category and a stable total U.S. workforce.

For readers evaluating Apple’s corporate accountability, the most accurate conclusion is measure-specific: Apple reports ongoing investment and some representation gains, but its available disclosures leave important questions about advancement, retention, employee experience and influence unresolved.
