Apple does not appear to have publicly issued a direct denial of reports that it cut iPhone Air production. The apparent rebuttal came from TD Cowen, whose supply-chain research reportedly kept its forecast unchanged at roughly 3 million units in calendar Q3 2025 and 7 million in Q4.
That conflicted with earlier reports from Mizuho Securities, Nikkei Asia and Ming-Chi Kuo describing weaker demand, reduced orders or sharply lower supplier capacity. The evidence therefore supports a supply-chain disagreement—not a confirmed Apple denial, proven sales collapse or product cancellation.
What Apple reportedly denied—and what it did not
The phrase “Apple denies” overstates the available evidence. Apple’s public iPhone Air announcement described the device’s design, specifications, pricing and launch dates, but did not disclose production targets, demand projections or model-level sales.

That is a major counterclaim, but it is not the same as an attributable Apple press release or executive statement denying the earlier reports.

Evidence check
- Confirmed: Apple’s launch specifications, dates and U.S. starting price.
- Reported: The Mizuho, Nikkei Asia, Ming-Chi Kuo, KeyBanc and TD Cowen claims as relayed by available coverage.
- Not established: A formal Apple denial, final iPhone Air sales or permanent cancellation of the product line.
The timeline of the conflicting production reports
- September 9, 2025: Apple introduced the iPhone Air as part of the iPhone 17 family. Preorders began September 12, with initial availability from September 19 in first-wave markets. Apple’s announcement listed a $999 U.S. starting price.
- October 17–18: Mizuho Securities was reportedly said to have reduced its iPhone Air estimate by about 1 million units because of weaker-than-expected demand. TechSpot’s summary described the revision.
- October 22: Nikkei Asia reportedly said Apple had cut iPhone Air production orders to levels approaching the end of a production run. The claim was summarized by 9to5Mac.
- October 22: Ming-Chi Kuo reportedly said suppliers could reduce iPhone Air capacity by more than 80% by Q1 2026, with some longer-lead-time components potentially discontinued by the end of 2025. That was a supplier-capacity estimate, not proof that finished-device production would fall by exactly 80%. Investing.com summarized Kuo’s claim.
- October 26–29: TD Cowen reportedly maintained its iPhone Air forecast and contradicted the more severe cut reports. TechSpot reported the counter-forecast.
TD Cowen’s reported 2025 forecast
The numbers described in coverage of TD Cowen’s note were:
| Measure | Reported estimate | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Air, Q3 2025 | About 3 million units | Analyst production estimate for the quarter |
| iPhone Air, Q4 2025 | About 7 million units | Analyst production estimate for the quarter |
| Total iPhone 17 family, September quarter | About 54 million units | Broader lineup production estimate |
| Total iPhone 17 family, December quarter | About 79 million units | Broader lineup production estimate |
Combined, TD Cowen’s Air figures implied approximately 10 million units across Q3 and Q4 2025. They were not confirmed Apple shipments, audited sales or an official internal forecast released by Apple.
Why the reports may not be mutually exclusive
It is tempting to declare one source right and the others wrong, but supply-chain reporting can measure different things:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Production orders: Purchase commitments Apple places with suppliers or assemblers.
- Assembly output: Devices actually being built during a period.
- Supplier capacity: The manufacturing ability or allocation reserved for a component or model.
- Shipments: Devices sent into distribution channels.
- Sell-through: Purchases by consumers, which is the closest of these measures to retail demand.
- Forecasts: Analysts’ expectations, which may change even when factory activity has not yet changed.
A supplier may reduce capacity while TD Cowen keeps its broader model forecast unchanged. A reported “end-of-production” order could refer to a specific component, production run or time period rather than permanent cancellation. Analysts may also have observed different suppliers, regions or stages of the manufacturing network.
These are possible explanations, not proven reasons for the disagreement. Early demand observations may also have been incomplete because China’s availability began later than in some other markets, and Apple could have shifted capacity among iPhone 17 models without changing the total family plan.

Why demand was a commercial question
Apple positioned the iPhone Air around extreme thinness and low weight rather than the broadest camera system or the lowest price. The phone measures 5.6mm thick and includes a 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion up to 120Hz, an A19 Pro chip, N1 and C1X connectivity components, a 48MP Fusion main camera and an 18MP Center Stage front camera. Storage options were 256GB, 512GB and 1TB. Apple lists the launch specifications.
The pricing created a difficult value comparison. The iPhone Air launched at $999 in the United States, while Apple announced the standard iPhone 17 at $799 for 256GB. Apple’s iPhone 17 announcement provides the standard model’s launch pricing.
That $200 premium made thinness the central buying decision. A buyer who values a lighter, slimmer phone and a large high-refresh-rate display may find the Air compelling. A buyer who prioritizes price, camera flexibility or conventional battery-and-hardware trade-offs may prefer the standard iPhone 17 or a Pro model.
Analysts cited in the coverage also raised the possibility that Apple’s standard and Pro models already satisfied much of the high-end demand. In that interpretation, the Air occupied an awkward middle position: premium-priced, but differentiated primarily by design.
Did the iPhone Air have weak demand?
The available reports point to concern, but they do not establish a definitive sales result.

A report citing a KeyBanc survey described “virtually no demand” for the iPhone Air. That phrase reflects an analyst interpretation of survey evidence—not an Apple sales disclosure. Investing.com summarized the report.
Similarly, ready availability at launch would not by itself prove weak demand. Apple’s initial inventory plan, regional allocations, storage-tier mix and carrier inventory are not fully public. Demand can also differ substantially by country, color, storage capacity, carrier and sales channel.
Apple generally does not publish unit sales for individual iPhone models. As a result, the October reports could support a case that expectations or supply plans were being reassessed, but they could not independently prove that consumers rejected the phone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happened to the wider iPhone 17 cycle?
Even if the iPhone Air experienced production pressure, that would not automatically mean the entire iPhone 17 generation was weak. TD Cowen’s reported estimates of 54 million units for the September quarter and 79 million for the December quarter suggested a substantial broader production plan.
The reported cuts were generally framed as capacity being redirected toward the standard iPhone 17 and Pro models, not as Apple abandoning the whole lineup. A weak result for one model can coexist with strong demand for other models, particularly when buyers trade up or down within the same product family.

A later Isaiah Research analysis estimated total iPhone production for calendar 2025 at 248–249 million units. That is a full-year estimate for all iPhones, not a confirmed iPhone Air sales figure, so it cannot resolve the model-specific dispute.
What this means before buying an iPhone Air
Production rumors should not be treated as a discount signal, availability guarantee or reason to assume the phone has been discontinued. Check Apple’s current iPhone Air purchase page for live pricing, inventory, financing and refurbished availability.
- Choose the Air if a very thin design and large ProMotion display are worth paying for.
- Choose the iPhone 17 if keeping the upfront price lower matters more than extreme thinness.
- Check the total cost: the $999 launch price did not include optional protection, accessories or cloud storage.
- Consider trade-in carefully: Apple’s trade-in value depends on the device, condition and timing. Offers can change, so use the official Apple Trade In page rather than relying on historical figures.
- Budget for accessories only if needed: Apple announced an iPhone Air MagSafe case at $49 and a MagSafe Battery at $99 at launch. A case or battery can reduce the practical benefit of buying an especially thin phone.
- Evaluate coverage by risk: AppleCare plans can cover eligible accidental damage and, on applicable plans, theft and loss, but the current price and terms should be checked before purchase at AppleCare.
The bottom line on the 2025 forecast
The strongest conclusion is narrower than the headline. Apple’s public materials did not establish a formal denial of iPhone Air production cuts. Instead, TD Cowen reportedly maintained an unchanged forecast of about 3 million Air units in Q3 2025 and 7 million in Q4, contradicting earlier reports of a roughly 1-million-unit estimate reduction, near-end-of-production orders and supplier-capacity reductions exceeding 80%.
Those reports may have measured different periods, suppliers or stages of production. Without Apple’s internal data or model-level sales disclosure, the evidence does not prove final iPhone Air sales, an exact production reduction or permanent cancellation. For buyers, the practical issue remains value: whether the Air’s thinness justifies its premium over the standard iPhone 17—not whether an October 2025 production rumor predicts its current availability.
