Apple offered temporary discounts of up to 500 yuan on selected iPhones in mainland China from January 4 through January 7, 2025. The promotion covered the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, among other Apple products, but it was limited by payment method and inventory. It was not a permanent global price cut—and the offer has expired.
What Apple discounted
Apple’s mainland-China promotion applied to selected iPhones, Macs, iPads, Apple Watches, AirPods and Apple Pencils. The maximum reported reductions were:
| Product | Maximum discount | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 16 Pro | 500 yuan | Largest iPhone reduction |
| iPhone 16 Pro Max | 500 yuan | Largest iPhone reduction |
| iPhone 16 | 400 yuan | Selected models |
| iPhone 16 Plus | 400 yuan | Selected models |
| iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 | Up to 300 yuan | Selected configurations |
| MacBook Air | Up to 800 yuan | Amount varied by configuration |
| iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods and Apple Pencil | Various | Model-specific reductions |
The iPhone offer reportedly covered only 29,300 units. Some discounts required eligible payment methods, including Alipay or WeChat Pay, so the advertised maximum was not automatically available to every customer or for every checkout method. Model, storage tier and stock also mattered. MacRumors reported the promotion’s product and quantity details.

Reuters cited starting prices of 7,999 yuan for the iPhone 16 Pro and 9,999 yuan for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. A 500-yuan reduction therefore represented approximately 6.25% of the Pro’s starting price and 5% of the Pro Max’s starting price. Reuters converted 500 yuan to approximately $68.50 at the time.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
That is meaningful because Apple rarely cuts the official price of a current flagship directly. It was nevertheless modest compared with some retailer-led promotions in China. The MacBook Air’s 800-yuan maximum reduction was larger in absolute terms, but its percentage cannot be calculated reliably without identifying the exact configuration.
Apple’s offer was different from marketplace discounts
This was an Apple-funded promotion available through Apple’s mainland-China website and physical Apple Stores. It should not be confused with discounts offered by Tmall, JD.com or other retailers.
Chinese e-commerce platforms can reduce prices through retailer coupons, payment incentives, subsidies and limited-time campaigns. Tmall reportedly offered iPhone 16 discounts of as much as 1,600 yuan during the November 2024 Singles’ Day period. Later reporting cited discounts of up to 1,000 yuan on the iPhone 16 series. Those figures describe marketplace promotions, not a permanent reduction in Apple’s official list price. Reuters’ syndicated reporting explains the distinction between Apple’s pricing and retailer discounts.

Government subsidies are another separate category. A subsidy may lower a customer’s effective purchase price without Apple changing its own price. Counterpoint reported that China’s national smartphone subsidy program applied to phones priced below 6,000 yuan, leaving many of Apple’s best-selling Pro models outside the threshold.
Why Apple discounted products in China
Huawei had regained momentum
Huawei was a major part of the competitive pressure. Reuters, citing IDC, reported that Apple’s China smartphone sales declined 0.3% year over year in the third quarter, while Huawei’s sales rose 42%. Huawei’s premium hardware and strong China-market positioning made it a more direct threat than a typical low-cost rival.
Huawei was not the only factor. Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and Honor compete across China’s value and premium segments, often with aggressive launch pricing, fast charging, high-refresh-rate displays, camera hardware and services tailored to local consumers.

Consumers were facing more price pressure
A short promotion can encourage customers who are delaying an upgrade without forcing Apple to reset its official prices permanently. It can also narrow the gap between Apple’s direct channel and marketplace listings, where shoppers have become accustomed to waiting for major shopping events.

The timing targeted seasonal demand
The January 4–7 offer came shortly before the Lunar New Year shopping period. That timing gave Apple a chance to stimulate near-term purchases while preserving its standard pricing structure outside the promotion.
How serious was Apple’s China problem?
The available market data points to a material weakening of Apple’s position, but the figures should not be treated as interchangeable:

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
- Canalys, full-year 2024: Apple held approximately 15% of China’s smartphone market, behind Vivo at 17% and Huawei at 16%; Apple’s shipments reportedly fell 17% for the year.
- Counterpoint, fourth quarter of 2024: Apple’s China iPhone shipments fell 18.2% year over year, leaving Apple behind Huawei and Xiaomi in that quarter.
- IDC, third quarter of 2024: Apple’s sales declined 0.3% year over year while Huawei’s rose 42%.
- Counterpoint, first quarter of 2025: Apple shipments declined 3% year over year while Huawei and Xiaomi benefited from China’s national subsidy program.
These measurements cover different periods and may measure shipments, sales or market share using different methodologies. They also describe the overall smartphone market rather than necessarily the same premium segment. The defensible conclusion is that Apple’s position weakened materially in China while domestic brands—especially Huawei—gained ground in the broader and premium markets. Counterpoint’s China smartphone analysis provides additional market context.

The offer reflects a strategic compromise. Apple needed to defend sales in an important market, but a permanent list-price reduction could weaken the premium positioning that supports its margins, resale values and brand perception.
A targeted promotion offers several potential benefits:

- Emergency SOS via satellite. Crash Detection. Roadside Assistance via satellite
- Up to 29 hours video playback. USB-C, Supports USB 3 for up to 20x faster transfers. Face ID
- It lowers the immediate purchase barrier for customers postponing an upgrade.
- It helps Apple compete with retailer-led promotions before Lunar New Year.
- It preserves official list prices after the four-day window.
- It supports the premium segment rather than relying only on discounts for older models.
It cannot, by itself, fix longer replacement cycles, limited upgrade incentives, local brands’ China-specific hardware and services, or differences in government-subsidy eligibility. Discounting also carries risks: customers may learn to wait for promotions, full-price buyers may feel disadvantaged, and a lower effective price may not address concerns about product differentiation.
Apple had run a similar China promotion the previous year, so the January event was unusual but not unprecedented. It is best understood as a recurring exceptional tactic—not evidence that Apple had abandoned premium pricing. The contemporaneous report from Reuters’ sources describes the promotion and its competitive rationale.
What shoppers should know
The January 2025 offer ended on January 7, 2025. Anyone evaluating an Apple purchase now should not assume that promotion, its pricing or its inventory is still available. Current prices and promotions require a fresh check of Apple China’s official store and authorized marketplaces.

- Apple’s official list price;
- a retailer discount or platform coupon;
- a payment-provider rebate;
- a government subsidy;
- trade-in credit; and
- a bundle or carrier-equivalent incentive.
Also confirm the exact model and storage tier, seller identity, payment requirements, warranty coverage, return terms and stock. For cross-border purchases, cellular-band compatibility, eSIM availability and region-specific software restrictions require separate verification. Huawei phones may also have Google-services limitations depending on the model and market.
Bottom line
Apple’s January 2025 China promotion was a limited demand stimulus, not a permanent iPhone price cut. The maximum 500-yuan reduction on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max signaled that Apple was responding to weaker momentum and intensifying competition from Huawei and other Chinese brands. Its limited duration, quantity cap and payment conditions allowed Apple to pursue short-term sales without formally abandoning its premium-price strategy.
