Apple’s current Apple 2030 plan is to cut greenhouse-gas emissions 75% from a 2015 baseline by 2030, then use carbon-removal projects to address residual emissions. The company reported that its global emissions were already down more than 60% against that baseline in 2024. So “50%” is not Apple’s current company-wide target—and carbon neutral does not mean emissions-free.
For consumers and investors, the key question is how much of the reported progress reflects reductions across Apple’s supply chain and products, and how much depends on accounting choices or later carbon removals.
Apple 2030, in plain English
Apple says it aims to make its entire global carbon footprint carbon neutral by 2030. That ambition reaches beyond Apple-owned offices and stores: it includes emissions associated with manufacturing, suppliers, materials, transportation, customer use of products, and end-of-life considerations. Apple says it will first reduce emissions by 75% from its 2015 baseline, then address the remaining emissions with high-quality carbon-removal projects. Apple’s environmental overview describes the plan.

A reduction target concerns emissions cuts; carbon neutrality, as Apple describes it, also depends on balancing residual emissions with removals. Apple has previously described its own corporate operations as carbon neutral, but Apple 2030 covers the much larger value chain around its products.

Where the 50% figure fits
Apple’s current headline reduction target is 75%, not 50%. The company uses 2015 as its comparison year. In an announcement dated April 16, 2025, Apple said its global greenhouse-gas emissions had fallen by more than 60% compared with 2015, based on its reporting for 2024. That is reported progress toward the 75% reduction component of the 2030 plan—not proof that Apple has reached carbon neutrality.
| Figure or date | What it means |
|---|---|
| 2015 | Apple’s baseline year for its stated 2030 reduction target. |
| More than 60% | Apple-reported reduction in global greenhouse-gas emissions versus 2015 through 2024. |
| 75% | Apple’s stated emissions-reduction aim by 2030, before balancing residual emissions. |
| 2030 | Deadline for Apple’s stated carbon-neutrality ambition across its global footprint. |
A percentage is only useful when its boundary and method are understood. Apple’s figure is a company-reported global result; it should not be read as a uniform 60% physical reduction at every supplier, in every emissions category, or for every product. It is also not a claim that Apple emits 60% less than in every later year. The distinction between gross emissions, market-based accounting, and credits matters.
What Apple says is driving progress
Apple attributes progress to supplier renewable electricity, energy efficiency, lower-carbon materials, manufacturing changes, and transportation. Its April 2025 announcement reported approximately 17.8 gigawatts of renewable electricity online in its global supply chain by the end of 2024. Apple said supplier renewable electricity avoided 21.8 million metric tons of emissions in 2024, and supplier efficiency work avoided nearly 2 million more. It also reported that display and semiconductor suppliers abated 8.4 million metric tons that year.

These are Apple-reported figures, and “avoided” emissions are not automatically the same as a measured reduction in Apple’s gross emissions. The figures also should not simply be added: different interventions and accounting boundaries may overlap.
Supplier electricity and the accounting question
Apple has said it is working toward 100% renewable electricity for Apple-related supplier production by 2030. Suppliers can support renewable generation through on-site systems, power-purchase agreements, utility contracts, or renewable-energy certificates. Those arrangements can help finance clean-energy projects, but they do not all establish that a factory used renewable electricity at the same time and place it consumed power. In many locations, electricity delivered through the grid still comes partly from fossil fuels.
This is why procurement claims and physical grid emissions are not interchangeable. A renewable-energy certificate can affect market-based emissions accounting without demonstrating an equivalent reduction in a facility’s location-based emissions. The distinction is central to independent scrutiny of Apple’s reported footprint.

Industrial process gases
Electricity is not the only manufacturing source. Semiconductor and display production can use fluorinated greenhouse gases, which are potent climate pollutants. Apple said 26 direct semiconductor suppliers had committed to abate at least 90% of Apple-related fluorinated gases by 2030, and that all direct display suppliers had made the same pledge. This work addresses process emissions that clean electricity alone would not remove.
Materials, shipping, and product use
Apple says recycled and renewable inputs can lower product emissions relative to virgin materials. Its 2025 progress announcement described 99% progress toward selected 2025 recycled-material targets, including cobalt in Apple-designed batteries and rare-earth elements in magnets. Those figures apply to specified components and uses—not every battery, magnet, or material in every Apple product. Recycled content does not by itself make a product low-impact; processing energy, manufacturing, transport, use, repair, and disposal also count.
Product life-cycle estimates also include transportation and customer electricity use. Apple’s product environmental reports provide product-specific details and assumptions. A product’s estimated use-phase emissions can vary with expected lifespan, charging patterns, configuration, and the electricity mix where it is used. Freight changes, such as shifting some shipping from air to ocean or rail, can help, but transport is only one part of an electronics product’s footprint.

What “carbon neutral” means on a product
Apple has marketed certain Apple Watch configurations and the Mac mini as carbon neutral. The claim is about a product’s estimated life-cycle emissions under Apple’s accounting approach: Apple says it reduces emissions associated with materials, electricity, and transportation, then balances residual emissions with nature-based carbon credits. The relevant product report—not a broad company target—is the place to check which configuration and assumptions a product claim covers.
Carbon neutral does not mean emissions-free. It does not establish that every component was made with renewable electricity, or that mining, water use, toxic waste, repairability, labor conditions, and electronic waste have no environmental impact. It is a climate-accounting claim, not an overall sustainability rating.

- Emissions reduction: less greenhouse gas is released—for example, by using less energy or changing an industrial process.
- Carbon removal: carbon dioxide is taken out of the atmosphere and stored.
- Avoided emissions: emissions that a project or intervention is estimated to have prevented compared with a counterfactual scenario.
- Offsetting: using credits for climate benefits elsewhere to compensate for emissions that remain.
Apple says it will use high-quality carbon removals for the emissions left after its planned 75% cut. It has described nature-based projects, including forest protection and restoration. Such projects may bring benefits beyond carbon storage, but their climate value depends on additionality (whether the benefit would have happened anyway), credible measurement, safeguards against double counting, and permanence. Forest carbon can be released again through fire, drought, pests, or land-use change. Temporary biological storage is not automatically equivalent to durable geological or mineral storage.

What independent scrutiny says
NewClimate Institute’s 2025 Corporate Climate Responsibility Monitor assessment of the technology sector recognized meaningful activity while raising questions about Apple’s market-based accounting, transparency around scope 2 and scope 3 emissions, renewable-energy certificates, and product-level carbon-neutral claims. Its analysis of Apple’s disclosures said location-based emissions were approximately three times the market-based figures Apple reported.
That is an independent assessment, not proof that Apple’s entire program is false. It highlights a real interpretive issue: contractual renewable-energy instruments can change reported market-based results, while location-based accounting reflects the average grid mix where electricity is consumed. NewClimate Institute has also criticized Apple’s product carbon-neutral claims, arguing that the label can overstate the climate significance of the reductions and removals involved.
A balanced reading is that Apple reports substantial supplier and materials initiatives, but its headline progress figure depends on boundaries and accounting methods. Residual emissions and the quality of carbon removals also deserve scrutiny. The label “carbon neutral” is narrower than many consumers may assume.
How to assess Apple’s next climate claim
When Apple publishes new progress or product claims, ask:
- What is the boundary? Does it cover Apple’s own operations, a product life cycle, or the global value chain?
- What is the baseline and reporting year? A percentage needs a comparison year, such as Apple’s 2015 baseline, and a clear data period.
- Is the number gross or net? Separate source reductions from residual emissions balanced with credits or removals.
- What does “renewable” mean here? Look for physical generation, supplier location, timing, and the role of certificates or contracts.
- Who verifies the figures? Check the methodology, assurance, and how supplier reductions are attributed.
- How durable are removals? Look for additionality, monitoring, reversal protections, and safeguards against double counting.
- What is excluded? Climate neutrality alone says little about repairability, extraction impacts, water, labor, or e-waste.
Apple’s environmental-report index lists a 2026 Environmental Progress Report, but the figures above come from Apple’s 2025 announcement of 2024 progress. Do not treat them as 2025 emissions totals or as Apple’s latest full-year progress percentage. For updated figures, consult the report index and the report’s tables for the applicable reporting year and accounting method.
For consumers, the practical takeaway is modest: a newer product may have lower reported life-cycle emissions than it otherwise would, but a carbon-neutral label is not a guarantee of zero climate impact. Keeping a device longer, repairing it, buying used, and recycling it responsibly can also reduce the impact associated with replacing electronics.
