Apple’s 2025 U.S. holiday return extension is no longer active. Under the reported policy, eligible Apple Store products received from November 12 through December 25, 2025 could be returned through January 8, 2026. That deadline has passed, so customers now need to rely on Apple’s standard policy, a retailer’s separate rules, warranty or service coverage, or another applicable remedy.
The policy applied to eligible purchases made directly through Apple—not automatically to every Apple product or every seller—and its ordinary return conditions and exclusions still applied.
The 2025 holiday return dates

The key wording was “received”. An order placed during the holiday period did not necessarily qualify if the product was delivered outside the qualifying dates. This distinction mattered for late-December orders and gifts shipped directly to recipients.

What purchases generally qualified?
The extension broadly covered eligible physical products purchased directly from the Apple Store, including categories such as iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple TV, HomePod, accessories, and eligible third-party hardware sold by Apple. However, “all products” should not be read as overriding Apple’s normal exclusions, special terms, or financing rules.
The original order record was the best way to determine whether a particular model or transaction qualified. Apple’s current U.S. policy generally provides a 14-day return period from receipt for ordinary eligible purchases; it no longer reflects the expired holiday extension. The major exception: carrier-financed iPhones
Carrier-financed iPhone purchases through T-Mobile or Verizon were excluded from the reported holiday extension and remained subject to the standard policy. Returning the hardware also should not be assumed to cancel wireless service, installment obligations, activation requirements, or promotional credits. Those issues must be confirmed with the carrier or financing provider.

Apple’s regular return conditions still applied
The holiday window extended the timing; it did not remove Apple’s underlying return requirements. Apple’s policy says products should be returned in their original condition with included parts, accessories, and packaging. Apple may inspect a returned product, and an approved refund or exchange can take additional time.
Opening and briefly evaluating ordinary hardware is not automatically the same as making it nonreturnable. But damage, heavy wear, missing accessories, engraving, or other changes can complicate approval. Apple may also be unable to accept a device if the person returning it cannot disable Find My or another security feature. Before returning a device:
- Back up and erase personal data.
- Sign out of the relevant Apple Account.
- Disable Find My and activation-related security features.
- Gather the device, accessories, documentation, and packaging.
- Photograph the device and package before shipping.
Apple’s U.S. policy also says products are generally returnable only in the country where they were purchased.

Items with separate or limited return rules
- Apple Gift Cards: Apple’s shopping policies state that they cannot be returned.
- Electronic software downloads: These are generally excluded from ordinary returns.
- Opened software: Physical software can have separate restrictions once opened.
- Custom-configured or personalized products: Check the transaction-specific terms carefully. Older Apple policy documents listed some custom or personalized items as exclusions, but that older wording should not be treated as definitive proof of how every 2025 transaction was handled.
- AppleCare+: Coverage has separate cancellation and refund terms. It does not automatically follow the hardware return in every transaction.
Apple maintains its sales, support, and coverage documents through its legal sales and support index.

For an online Apple purchase, start at Apple’s Returns & Refunds page. Apple’s workflow may change, but the process generally involves:
- Sign in and locate the order in the order-listing area.
- Select the eligible order and begin the return.
- Follow Apple’s shipping instructions or choose an Apple Store return if Apple offers that option.
- Package the product securely with the requested accessories and materials.
- Keep the carrier receipt, tracking number, and proof of delivery for a mail return.
Do not ship a device while it remains linked to your account or protected by an activation lock. A return can be delayed or rejected until those security requirements are resolved.

How the refund could be issued
Refunds generally return to the original payment method. A gift-receipt return may instead result in an Apple Gift Card. Amounts paid with Apple Account balance may be returned to the Apple Account or, if that is not possible, to an Apple Gift Card.
For cash or cash-equivalent returns above $750, Apple says it may issue a refund check by mail, which can take up to 10 business days. Inspection and payment-processing time can add to the overall wait.

Apple generally will not process a return for a product purchased from Amazon, Best Buy, Costco, a carrier, or another seller. That seller may have offered a different holiday deadline, restocking rule, activation requirement, or financing exception. The fact that the product is made by Apple does not determine who controls the return.

What to do if the January 8 deadline was missed
The expired holiday policy cannot be used to create a new return right now. Check whether a separate issue applies:
- For a defect, contact Apple or the original seller about warranty or service options rather than describing it as a change-of-mind return.
- Review AppleCare+ terms if coverage was purchased.
- Contact the carrier about installment payments, service obligations, promotional credits, or activation requirements.
- Contact the original retailer if the purchase was not made through Apple.
- Ask Apple Support whether a discretionary exception is available, but do not treat a store-level exception as the published policy.
For future purchases, compare the seller’s return deadline, financing terms, refund method, and return logistics—not just the product price. Buying directly from Apple can simplify Apple-related support, while another retailer may offer a lower price or a longer window. The retailer’s own policy controls when the purchase is made elsewhere.
