What “best price yet” means
In this context, “best price yet” means the lowest reported price for this specific 2025 A16, 128GB Wi‑Fi configuration since it became available—or the lowest price identified by the publication’s tracking. It does not mean the cheapest iPad ever sold.

Why the base iPad was a strong budget deal
At $279, the standard iPad offered a relatively affordable entry into Apple’s tablet ecosystem while providing hardware suitable for everyday use. The A16 chip is appropriate for browsing, streaming, video calls, schoolwork, note-taking, ordinary productivity, and light gaming. The 128GB starting capacity is also more practical than the smallest capacities found on some older iPads.

USB-C adds compatibility with modern cables and accessories. The iPad can also support Apple Pencil workflows, although the compatible Pencil model and any required adapter must be confirmed before purchase. The trade-off is that this is Apple’s lower-cost tablet. It does not offer the iPad Air’s faster M-series platform, more advanced display, or broader premium accessory capabilities. A case, Pencil, keyboard, charger, and protection plan can also substantially raise the total cost.

The M3 iPad Air was reported at $449 during the same event, a $150 discount, according to October 2025 deal coverage. Choosing it meant paying $170 more than the discounted base iPad. That premium made sense for buyers who needed a better display, more demanding creative or multitasking performance, Apple Pencil Pro support, or more capable keyboard accessories. It was difficult to justify for someone mainly browsing, streaming, reading, attending video calls, and completing schoolwork.

The iPad mini was the more natural alternative for portability, but its smaller display made it less suitable as a laptop substitute or shared family tablet. The iPad Pro was aimed at a different budget and workload altogether.

Consider the iPad Air if the tablet will handle sustained creative work, demanding games, frequent multitasking, or laptop-style use for several years. Its display and accessory support may also matter more than the initial $170 saving.

The base iPad is a weaker fit if you need a laminated, glare-resistant display, cellular connectivity, more than 128GB, or substantial local storage for games, downloaded video, photos, or video projects. A carefully chosen refurbished iPad Air or Pro could provide premium display and accessory features at a similar price, but check battery condition, warranty, seller reputation, and the return window.
