Apple’s extended holiday return policy applied to qualifying purchases made or received from November 8 through December 25, 2024, in the United States and several other markets. The main return deadline was January 8, 2025. That policy has expired; it is not available for purchases made in 2026.
What Apple’s 2024 holiday return policy covered
For the 2024 holiday season, Apple temporarily extended the return period for most products bought directly from Apple. In the main participating markets, an eligible product purchased in an Apple Store—or ordered from the Apple Online Store and received during the qualifying period—could generally be returned through January 8, 2025.
The policy was especially relevant to holiday gifts and Apple’s late-2024 Mac launches, including the Mac mini, iMac and MacBook Pro. Those models were examples of products covered by the broader holiday policy, not products with a separate or special return guarantee.

For online purchases, the reported Apple wording referred to the product being received during the qualifying period—not simply ordered during it. An order placed by December 25 but delivered after December 25 should not automatically be treated as eligible; the order record’s return-by date was the most practical confirmation.

Which countries used the January 8 deadline?
The November 8–December 25 qualifying window and January 8, 2025 return deadline applied in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and many other countries.
Dates were not universal worldwide. In Italy, Spain, Japan and Mexico, most eligible products purchased from November 8, 2024 through January 6, 2025 could reportedly be returned through January 20, 2025. Country-specific consumer rules and Apple terms could still affect the result, so shoppers outside the United States needed to check the policy for the market where the purchase was made.

Were iPhones included?
Not every iPhone transaction received the extension. Carrier-financed iPhones—specifically those involving T-Mobile or Verizon in the reported policy—were excluded and remained subject to the applicable standard return terms.
That does not mean every iPhone was excluded. An iPhone purchased outright from Apple could generally qualify if it met the holiday-policy dates and all other conditions. However, a carrier or wireless provider could impose separate return, activation, financing or cancellation requirements.

Apple Store purchases versus online orders
The policy covered qualifying purchases from Apple retail stores and the Apple Online Store. The timing test differs slightly in practice:
- Apple Store purchase: The in-store purchase date was central.
- Online order: The product generally needed to be received between November 8 and December 25, 2024.
- Store pickup: Treat the collection date as the practical receipt date, while using Apple’s order record as the final check.
- Third-party purchase: Apple’s deadline did not automatically apply. The retailer’s policy controlled.
What the holiday extension did not change
The longer deadline was not an unconditional trial or exchange program. Apple’s holiday wording preserved the other terms and conditions of its standard sales-and-refunds policy. Apple’s current Returns & Refunds page is useful for understanding Apple’s general framework, but it should not be treated as proof of every historical 2024 detail.

Depending on the product and transaction, readers would still need to consider:
- Proof of purchase and the original order or receipt.
- The product’s condition and whether included accessories were available.
- Personalized, engraved or specially configured products, which may have product-specific restrictions.
- Cellular financing and requirements imposed by a carrier.
- Software, media, subscriptions, AppleCare+ and other services, whose terms may differ from hardware-return rules.
- The refund method and the time required for the refund to appear.
- Whether the deadline required initiating a return, shipping the item or Apple receiving it. The applicable return instructions controlled this detail.
Return is not the same as exchange
The confirmed holiday policy concerned returns, not an automatic right to exchange any product through January 8. Someone wanting a different model, storage capacity or configuration might have needed to return the original item and place a new order, subject to inventory and the applicable terms.

That distinction mattered for custom Macs, upgraded configurations and engraved products. Their treatment should have been determined from Apple’s historical terms and the specific order record rather than assumed from the headline holiday deadline.

- Confirm the seller. The purchase needed to be from Apple for Apple’s policy to apply. Amazon, Best Buy, Target and other retailers had their own holiday rules.
- Check the relevant date. For an Apple Store purchase, review the purchase date. For an online order, check when the product was delivered or collected.
- Identify the transaction type. Carrier-financed iPhones were a known exception, and carrier terms could govern other parts of the transaction.
- Check the country. The deadline could be January 8 or January 20, 2025 depending on the market.
- Review the order page or receipt. Apple’s recorded return-by date was the best practical confirmation for an individual order.
- Gather the complete purchase. Keep the device, accessories, documentation and packaging available, and follow Apple’s return instructions.
Examples
- Mac mini received on November 20, 2024 from Apple: Generally covered by the holiday window, assuming no applicable product-specific restriction.
- Apple Online Store order placed on December 24 but delivered on December 27: Not automatically covered by the holiday extension; check the order’s recorded return date.
- Carrier-financed iPhone purchased during the holiday period: The reported exclusion meant the carrier or standard return policy applied instead.
- Apple product purchased at Best Buy: Best Buy’s return policy governed the transaction, not Apple’s January 8 deadline.
- Purchase made on December 26, 2024: It did not automatically receive the holiday extension and generally fell under Apple’s standard return policy.
Why the policy matters only as a historical 2024 rule
Apple’s extended window was temporary. In the main markets, the relevant deadline passed on January 8, 2025; in markets with the longer schedule, it passed on January 20, 2025. The policy should therefore be read as a historical explanation of 2024 holiday purchases, not as current shopping guidance.
