Apple may be steering customers toward recurring AppleCare coverage, but Apple has not publicly established that AppleCare+ is now subscription-only across the United States. As of August 18, 2026, Apple’s support and legal documents still describe monthly and annual plans and continue to reference one-time “Single Pay” AppleCare+ coverage. Availability depends on the product, purchase date, country, and plan terms.
What is actually changing?
The claim that Apple is shifting AppleCare+ to a subscription-only model should be treated as a reported or developing change—not a confirmed blanket policy. “Subscription-only” could mean several different things:
- Upfront plans are no longer offered to new customers.
- Apple is promoting monthly or annual billing while retaining some single-pay options.
- The change applies only to certain products, such as iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- The change is limited to particular countries, states, sales channels, or purchase flows.
- Apple is emphasizing AppleCare One rather than eliminating single-device AppleCare+.
Those possibilities have different financial consequences. Apple’s published U.S. documentation does not, by itself, prove that every AppleCare+ purchase has moved to recurring billing.

Apple’s support materials say new products can generally be enrolled in AppleCare coverage within 60 days of purchase, although eligibility and plan types vary by product and region. The same documentation describes AppleCare+ coverage that can renew monthly or annually. See Apple’s AppleCare enrollment guidance.

Apple’s legal documentation also distinguishes between Single Pay and Monthly Pay. Single Pay refers to a fixed-term plan paid upfront. Monthly Pay is recurring coverage. “Annual” should not automatically be interpreted as a permanently fixed one-year contract: renewal, cancellation, refunds, and price changes depend on the applicable plan and jurisdiction. Read the terms for the exact product and market before buying.
AppleCare+ is available across several product categories, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and Beats products, Apple TV, HomePod, Apple Vision Pro, and displays, but the available payment options are not necessarily identical for each one.
What happens to existing AppleCare customers?
A new enrollment policy would not automatically rewrite an existing contract. The practical position differs by customer:

| Customer status | What can safely be concluded |
|---|---|
| Paid upfront for fixed-term AppleCare+ | Coverage should be governed by the contract already purchased through its applicable term. Do not assume automatic conversion to a subscription. |
| Monthly subscriber | Billing generally continues until cancellation or termination under the plan terms. Apple says recurring plans can be canceled, but rules vary by region and billing method. |
| Annual customer | Renewal and refund treatment depends on the specific annual plan and local rules. “Annual” does not by itself answer whether renewal is automatic. |
| New device buyer | The options shown at checkout or in Settings are the most relevant evidence for that device and region. |
| Owner of an expired plan | Some customers may be able to seek new coverage, but eligibility is not guaranteed and can involve diagnostics, inspection, device-age limits, or a lapse in coverage. |
| AppleCare One customer | Eligible devices can be added or removed under the recurring plan’s rules and current pricing. |
For cancellation and refund details, consult Apple’s AppleCare cancellation guidance. For possible enrollment after expiration, see Apple’s post-expiration coverage guidance.
AppleCare+ and AppleCare One are different products
AppleCare+ is generally single-device coverage. It provides additional hardware service and technical support, including coverage for unlimited accidental-damage incidents per covered device under the applicable terms. Service fees, exclusions, and theft-and-loss benefits vary by product and plan.
AppleCare One is a recurring multi-device plan. Apple’s cited U.S. disclosure lists a price of $19.99 per month for up to three devices, plus $5.99 per month for each additional device. It uses a recurring one-month term and continues unless canceled or terminated under the plan. Apple also says AppleCare One is not required to buy or finance a new device.

AppleCare One can cover devices already owned, subject to eligibility requirements and possible diagnostics or inspection. It is not simply “AppleCare+ for everything”: device eligibility, service fees, theft-and-loss limits, and other conditions still apply. See Apple’s AppleCare legal terms and the U.S. AppleCare One disclosure.

Apple’s 2026 U.S. disclosure lists examples including:
- $29 for certain iPhone screen or back-glass damage.
- $99 for other accidental iPhone damage.
- $149 for iPhone theft or loss.
- $29 for certain iPad screen damage.
- $99 or $129 for certain iPad accidental damage, depending on model.
- Generally $69 to $79 for Apple Watch accidental damage.
- $119 or $149 for certain Apple Watch, iPhone, and iPad theft-or-loss claims.
These are U.S. AppleCare One figures from the cited 2026 disclosure, not universal AppleCare prices. Theft-and-loss protection is not the same as ordinary accidental-damage coverage and may have claim limits and additional requirements.

Has AppleCare become more expensive?
MacRumors and 9to5Mac reported in July 2026 that Apple raised some AppleCare+ prices for new Mac and iPad subscribers. The reports described increases of 50 cents per month or $5 per year, while existing subscribers reportedly kept their current prices. The reporting did not establish a price increase across every Apple product or market, so it should not be generalized. Check the live Apple purchase flow for the exact device, country, and plan.

Monthly pricing can look small while becoming substantial over a long ownership period. Using Apple’s cited U.S. AppleCare One price:

| Coverage period | Up to three devices | Four devices |
|---|---|---|
| 24 months | $479.76 | $623.52 |
| 36 months | $719.64 | $935.28 |
| 60 months | $1,199.40 | $1,558.80 |
The four-device figures add $5.99 per month to the $19.99 base price. These totals exclude service fees, price changes, taxes where applicable, and any coverage limits. They also do not show whether AppleCare One is cheaper than separate AppleCare+ plans, because individual-device premiums vary and must be checked on Apple’s current purchase pages.

For one device, compare the complete recurring cost with the device’s repair or replacement risk. For multiple devices, calculate the separate AppleCare+ total before assuming AppleCare One is a bargain. A household with three expensive, frequently handled devices may get more value from the consolidated plan than someone with one low-risk device.
Who may benefit from recurring AppleCare?
- High-risk users: Recurring coverage may suit people who travel frequently, work outdoors, or have a history of accidental damage.
- Long-term owners: Continued coverage can be useful for someone keeping an expensive device for several years, subject to eligibility and plan availability.
- Annual upgraders: Lower upfront cost may be attractive when a device will be replaced before a long fixed term ends.
- Families with several devices: AppleCare One may simplify billing and can be competitive when enough eligible devices are enrolled.
- Careful single-device owners: Self-insuring may be more economical if the owner has emergency savings and rarely needs repairs.
Neither recurring coverage nor self-insurance eliminates risk. A single theft or major repair can change the calculation, while a subscription can become expensive if it remains active after a device is sold or replaced.
Important edge cases
- Selling a device: Cancel the plan or confirm whether and how coverage transfers. Do not assume the subscription automatically follows the device.
- Replacing a device after a claim: Ask Apple whether the replacement inherits coverage or requires a new enrollment.
- Changing Apple Accounts: Coverage management is tied to device and account records, so account changes can complicate cancellation or eligibility.
- Financing or the iPhone Upgrade Program: Apple’s support guidance notes that an existing AppleCare+ plan may need to be canceled before a device becomes eligible for AppleCare One in some arrangements.
- Missed payments: Recurring coverage can terminate if payments fail.
- Price changes: Renewal pricing is governed by the plan terms and may not remain at today’s rate.
- Regional rules: U.S. prices, deductibles, refund rights, and insurance disclosures cannot be applied worldwide.
What to check before buying
- Open the device’s coverage options in Settings or check Apple’s current purchase page.
- Confirm the exact plan name: AppleCare+, AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, or AppleCare One.
- Check whether the payment is Single Pay, monthly, or annual.
- Review service fees, theft-and-loss deductibles, claim limits, and exclusions.
- Calculate the total premium over the time you expect to keep the device.
- Read cancellation, renewal, refund, and replacement-device terms.
- Verify eligibility if the device is older, previously covered, financed, or already repaired.
Bottom line
Apple is clearly expanding recurring AppleCare options, and AppleCare One is an established multi-device subscription. But Apple’s available public documentation does not establish that AppleCare+ has universally become subscription-only. Existing fixed-term customers should not assume they must switch, and new buyers should check the live options for their specific product, region, and purchase date before deciding between single pay, recurring AppleCare+, AppleCare One, third-party coverage, or self-insuring.
