As of August 18, 2026, Florida is the only state in the reported 2026 Apple sales-tax-holiday list with an open window: its holiday runs through August 20. The other nine reported state windows have ended. The original eight-state list—Alabama, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Mexico, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia—was not the complete 2026 picture: Florida and South Carolina were also included in a broader list. And “Apple products” does not mean every iPhone, Mac, iPad or accessory qualifies. State rules set the dates, product categories and price limits.
If you are shopping now, check Florida’s rules before ordering. If you are reviewing a purchase made during an earlier holiday, use the state-by-state dates and limits below to understand what may have qualified.
2026 Apple sales-tax holiday dates and eligibility
These are reported 2026 dates and product categories, not a guarantee that a particular item or transaction qualified. State revenue departments’ rules control; confirm the exact product, price cap, purchase terms and local-tax treatment with the relevant state agency. The eight states in the original headline are marked below, with Florida and South Carolina added to show the broader reported list.

|---|---|---|
| Alabama | July 17–19 (ended) | Computers, including Macs, and related computer equipment, software and school computer supplies. Computer purchases were capped at $1,173 per item; accessories generally needed to be sold with a qualifying computer. Local participation can affect the exemption. |
| Florida | July 20–August 20 (open through August 20) | Qualifying personal computers and computer-related accessories, including some Macs and iPads, up to $1,500 per item. Check the Florida Department of Revenue’s 2026 guidance. |
| New Mexico | July 31–August 2 (ended) | Computers, including Macs, iPads, monitors, printers and specified related equipment. Computers were capped at $1,000; many accessories at $500. |
| Tennessee | July 31–August 2 (ended) | Computers, including Macs and iPads, and specified accessories such as displays, keyboards, mice, speakers, cables and Apple Pencil. The reported general cap was $1,500; some accessories had to be purchased with a qualifying computer. |
| West Virginia | July 31–August 3 (ended) | Qualifying laptop or tablet computers, including some iPads, priced at $500 or less per item. |
| Arkansas | August 1–2 (ended) | A broad reported electronic-device category included Macs, iPads, iPhones, Apple Vision Pro and specified related items such as printers, displays, Apple Pencil, keyboards, mice and accessories. Confirm that the particular device or accessory meets the state’s definition. See the Arkansas 2026 instructions. |
| Missouri | August 7–9 (ended) | Computers, iPads and related equipment including displays, keyboards, mice, Apple Pencil, printers, storage devices and software. Computers and related equipment were generally capped at $1,500; software had a separate $350 cap. |
| South Carolina | August 7–9 (ended) | Computers, tablets and related items were included in the broader reported list. Check the state’s precise 2026 category and price rules before treating an Apple item as eligible. |
| Virginia | August 7–9 (ended) | Cellphone chargers and cellphone batteries priced at $60 or less per item. This was not a general exemption for iPhones, iPads or Macs. |
| Massachusetts | August 8–9 (ended) | Most tangible personal property, potentially including Apple devices, priced at $2,500 or less per item. An item priced above $2,500 is taxable in full, not just on the amount over the limit. See the Massachusetts announcement. |

What can you still buy tax-free?
On August 18, Florida is the only reported state in this list still within its holiday period. The Florida window is scheduled to end August 20, 2026, and the reported $1,500 per-item limit and computer-related product rules apply. The state’s guidance should be your final check for the item and transaction.
For the other states, the 2026 dates above have passed. A qualifying item bought outside its state’s holiday window does not become exempt simply because that state held a holiday earlier in the year.

Why “Apple products” is too broad
Tax holidays generally define eligible categories, not brands. A state may exempt computers but not phones; another may cover a tablet only below a price cap; another may exempt only a small group of accessories. A product’s Apple branding does not make it tax-free.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Macs: A Mac can be a strong candidate where computers are covered, but high-end configurations may exceed a per-item cap. Check whether the cap applies to the item’s full selling price.
- iPads: Some state rules include tablets, but coverage and limits differ. Do not assume every iPad or configuration qualifies.
- iPhones: The reported list described broad phone eligibility in Arkansas, but not across the other states. Virginia’s narrow rule concerned chargers and batteries, not the phone itself.
- Accessories: A keyboard, display, mouse or Apple Pencil may qualify only if it falls within the state’s category—and, in some states, only when bought with a qualifying computer.
- Other Apple products: Do not assume Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple TV, HomePod or Vision Pro is covered. The reported Arkansas list included Vision Pro, but shoppers should verify its treatment under the state’s official definition.
- AppleCare+ and services: Do not count protection plans, subscriptions, cellular service or shipping as exempt unless the applicable state rules expressly support that treatment.
Price thresholds can have sharp consequences. Massachusetts, for example, says that an item over its $2,500 threshold is taxable in full, rather than only on the portion above the cap. Other states may use different rules, so do not apply one state’s treatment to another.

How much could the holiday save?
A useful estimate is qualifying purchase price × the tax rate that would otherwise apply. For example, a $1,000 eligible purchase in a location with a combined 7% sales-tax rate would avoid about $70 if the entire tax were removed. That is an illustration, not a guaranteed saving.
The actual amount may be smaller—or zero—if local tax remains, the item does not qualify, the item exceeds a price cap, the purchase falls outside the dates, or the retailer does not apply the exemption correctly. Some programs suspend state tax and treat local taxes differently. Alabama, for example, can depend on local participation. Check the state’s rules and keep the final receipt.

Buying online, picking up or shopping in a store
For an online order, the delivery or pickup location matters. Apple says tax is generally based on the shipping address for delivery, or the Apple Store location for in-store pickup. See Apple’s payment and tax information.

- Store pickup: Check the tax treatment for the Apple Store location where you collect the order; the location, not simply your home address, can determine the applicable tax.
- In-store purchase: The store location and that state’s rules control.
- Other retailers: Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart and other sellers may handle exemptions differently. Their checkout calculation does not override state law; ask the seller how it applies the state’s rules.
Do not rely solely on the amount displayed in a cart. Apple notes that checkout tax can be an estimate and the final invoice reflects the final tax calculation. Review the final receipt. If tax appears to have been charged incorrectly, ask the retailer about correcting it and consult the state revenue department about its refund process.

Should you travel to another state to shop?
Not necessarily. A sale in a participating state may avoid tax at checkout if it meets that state’s rules, but your home state may impose use tax on goods bought elsewhere and brought home. A point-of-sale exemption is not proof that no tax obligation exists.
Before making a special trip, compare the likely tax saving with travel and lodging, time, delivery costs and any home-state use-tax obligation. Include the risk that the item or configuration will not qualify. For a modest accessory—or a device above the price cap—the trip can cost more than it saves.
Can you combine a tax holiday with an Apple discount?
Potentially. Reporting on Apple’s 2026 holiday information said tax savings could coincide with Apple’s back-to-school promotion where both applied. But the offers have separate rules. Check the promotion’s dates, eligible models, gift-card or accessory terms, refurbished-product treatment and education requirements. Apple education pricing is not available to everyone simply because a state has a tax holiday; education eligibility is separate.
Compare the final price, not just the tax line. A lower pre-tax price from another retailer may beat a tax saving at Apple, while a discounted or refurbished model could help keep a purchase below a state’s cap. Inventory, configuration and retailer tax handling can differ.
A quick pre-purchase checklist
- Identify where the order will be delivered or picked up.
- Check that state’s 2026 revenue-department rules and the holiday dates.
- Confirm the product category and per-item price limit.
- Check whether accessories must be purchased with a qualifying computer.
- Verify any personal-use, local-tax or retailer conditions.
- Compare the after-tax total with other legitimate discounts.
- Save the applicable rules and retain the final receipt.
Never misstate a shipping address or purchase purpose to obtain an exemption. If checkout does not reflect an apparent exemption, ask the retailer how it classifies the item and whether an in-store transaction or correction is available.
