Apple reportedly withdrew from talks to invest in OpenAI in September 2024, even as the companies continued working together to bring ChatGPT to Apple Intelligence and Siri. The proposed funding round was expected to raise as much as $6.5 billion, but the available reporting did not disclose how much Apple might have invested—or confirm that Apple had committed any money.
This is a report from September 27, 2024, not a new August 2026 development. The key distinction is that Apple was reportedly stepping away from an equity investment, not ending its commercial relationship with OpenAI.
What happened?
According to a report attributed to The Wall Street Journal, Apple was no longer participating in discussions to invest in an OpenAI funding round shortly before the round was expected to close. The round was reportedly expected to raise up to $6.5 billion, with Microsoft and Nvidia also identified as possible participants.

It does not establish that Apple had signed an investment agreement, transferred funds, or previously held an ownership stake in OpenAI. For that reason, “Apple pulled its investment” would be too strong; “Apple reportedly dropped out of investment discussions” is more accurate.

The amount Apple might have invested was not disclosed. The $6.5 billion figure referred to the potential size of the entire funding round—not Apple’s contribution.

Apple was still working with OpenAI
Apple’s reported investment decision did not end its OpenAI partnership. At the time, Apple and OpenAI were working to integrate ChatGPT into Apple’s software ecosystem, including Apple Intelligence and Siri.
Under the planned integration, Siri could direct some requests to ChatGPT when Apple’s own systems could not provide an answer, particularly requests requiring broader world knowledge. Users were expected to be asked for permission before information was shared with ChatGPT.

That arrangement illustrates an important business distinction:
- Partnership: Apple could give users access to OpenAI’s technology through its platforms.
- Distribution: OpenAI could gain exposure to Apple’s large device and software user base.
- Investment: Apple would take financial exposure to OpenAI’s value, performance, governance, and future prospects.
A company can pursue the first two without pursuing the third. Nothing in the available reporting indicates that Apple needed to invest in OpenAI to continue the ChatGPT integration.
Was Apple paying OpenAI for ChatGPT integration?
Contemporaneous coverage, citing Bloomberg, described the arrangement as involving no direct payment from either company to the other. Apple reportedly viewed the distribution and visibility created by placing ChatGPT in Apple devices as valuable enough to offset a conventional payment.

The full commercial agreement was not disclosed, so it would be too broad to conclude that Apple had no financial relationship with OpenAI of any kind.

Strategically, the reported structure would have given Apple access to OpenAI’s capabilities while allowing OpenAI to reach potentially millions of Apple users. Apple’s distribution power may itself have been an important negotiating asset.
Why might Apple have decided not to invest?
The available reporting does not explain Apple’s reason, and no single explanation should be presented as fact. Several interpretations are possible:
Apple may have preferred a supplier relationship
Apple could benefit from OpenAI’s models as a technology or distribution partner without taking on the risks of owning part of the company. This would let Apple evaluate the relationship through product performance rather than through an investment position.

Apple Intelligence was not necessarily dependent on one AI company. Avoiding an equity stake could make it easier for Apple to work with multiple providers or change arrangements as models, prices, privacy terms, and capabilities evolve.

Apple may have avoided valuation and restructuring risk
OpenAI’s valuation, losses, governance arrangements, and corporate structure were subjects of significant uncertainty in 2024. Apple may have judged that the potential financial exposure was not necessary to obtain the product benefits it wanted. However, the reporting does not prove that any of these issues caused Apple’s decision.
The two decisions may simply have been separate
Apple’s investment team and product teams can make different decisions. A company may consider a technology strategically useful while deciding that an equity investment does not meet its return, risk, or capital-allocation requirements.

What the report does—and does not—mean
- It does mean: Apple was reportedly no longer in talks to participate in OpenAI’s 2024 funding round.
- It does not mean: Apple invested $6.5 billion and later recovered the money. The $6.5 billion was the proposed total round size.
- It does mean: Apple continued pursuing ChatGPT integration with Apple Intelligence and Siri at the time.
- It does not mean: Apple abandoned artificial intelligence or its broader Apple Intelligence strategy.
- It does mean: Apple appeared willing to collaborate commercially without taking an equity stake.
- It does not mean: Apple had publicly confirmed that it lost confidence in OpenAI, objected to its governance, or discovered financial problems.
How Microsoft and Nvidia fit into the story
Microsoft and Nvidia were reported as possible participants in the proposed funding round. Their potential involvement does not reveal Apple’s investment amount or prove that Apple had different views about OpenAI.
Coverage of Microsoft’s relationship with OpenAI also requires careful wording. A reported 49% share of OpenAI’s profits is not the same as saying Microsoft owned 49% of the company. Profit participation, equity ownership, voting control, and contractual rights are different concepts.

What about Jony Ive?
Former Apple design chief Jony Ive had confirmed work with OpenAI on an AI hardware product, making the connection relevant background. But that relationship does not establish why Apple reportedly left the funding talks. There is no evidence in the available reporting that Apple withdrew because of the hardware project or because of Ive’s involvement.
Why this matters for Apple’s strategy
The decision suggests a potentially disciplined approach to AI partnerships: obtain useful technology and distribution benefits while avoiding unnecessary financial exposure to a fast-changing private company.
That strategy has trade-offs. Apple could preserve the ability to work with multiple AI providers and avoid tying its balance sheet to OpenAI. In exchange, it would give up any direct financial upside from OpenAI’s growth and might have less influence over the company’s roadmap.
The strongest supported conclusion is narrower than many headlines imply: Apple reportedly chose not to become an investor in this OpenAI funding round while continuing to use OpenAI as one component of its AI strategy. The available evidence does not establish whether the choice reflected valuation concerns, capital discipline, negotiating strategy, corporate uncertainty, or an unrelated investment decision.
