Apple reportedly completed its acquisition of Paris-based AI startup Datakalab on December 17, 2023, months before the deal became public in April 2024. The purchase price was not disclosed, and Apple has not said which products or services—if any—use Datakalab’s technology.
Datakalab specialized in compressing artificial-intelligence models and running computer-vision workloads efficiently on embedded, low-power hardware. That makes the company a plausible fit for Apple’s interest in on-device AI, but it does not prove a connection to Apple Intelligence or any specific iPhone, iPad, Mac, or wearable feature.
What Apple bought
Datakalab was a small French technology company based in Paris. Its work focused on AI algorithm compression, embedded computer vision, and efficient machine-learning systems that could process information locally rather than relying entirely on cloud servers.

The transaction was reported by MacRumors and other outlets after the reported closing date was identified through a European Commission filing. The available reporting indicates that the acquisition was completed on December 17, 2023, while the public news coverage appeared on April 22, 2024.

Apple did not announce the deal through a prominent press release, and the financial terms remain undisclosed. There is no reliable basis for estimating what Apple paid from Datakalab’s size, funding history, or comparisons with Apple’s much larger acquisitions.
What Datakalab’s technology means
AI models can require substantial memory, processing power, and energy. Model compression aims to reduce those requirements, potentially allowing a model to run faster and more efficiently on a phone, camera, wearable, vehicle system, or other device with limited hardware.

- More responsive by processing data locally;
- Less dependent on an internet connection;
- More efficient on battery-powered hardware;
- Less reliant on sending images or other sensitive data to a remote server; and
- Cheaper to operate at scale because some workloads need fewer cloud resources.
These are strategic reasons Apple might value the company’s expertise, not confirmed statements about Apple’s purpose for the acquisition. Local AI also involves trade-offs: compressed models can lose some accuracy or capability, while demanding generative-AI workloads may still require cloud infrastructure or a split between local and remote processing.
Datakalab’s earlier work
Contemporaneous reports described Datakalab as having worked with the French government on systems intended to identify whether people were wearing masks on public transportation during the COVID-19 period. The company was also associated with work involving Disney.
Reports described Datakalab’s systems as analyzing images locally and converting them into anonymized statistical information. Those descriptions should be understood as claims about Datakalab’s earlier products and projects, not as a new Apple privacy commitment.

Who founded Datakalab?
Datakalab was founded by brothers Xavier Fischer and Lucas Fischer. Contemporary sources differ on whether the company began in 2016 or 2017, so the safest description is that it was founded in the mid-2010s.

Why the acquisition could matter to Apple
Apple has invested heavily in hardware and software that can process machine-learning tasks directly on its devices. Datakalab’s focus on efficient embedded AI could complement that strategy in areas such as:

- Wearables: delivering useful machine-learning features within strict battery limits; and
- Privacy-sensitive applications: keeping some analysis on the device instead of transmitting raw data.
Apple’s likely interest, based on the technical fit, would be the ability to make AI systems smaller and more power-efficient. But Apple has not publicly disclosed the assets, employees, intellectual property, or product plans it obtained in the transaction.

There is no confirmed evidence that Datakalab technology was incorporated into Apple Intelligence, iOS 18, or any named Apple feature. The acquisition became public shortly before Apple’s June 2024 software announcements, which made speculation about a connection understandable, but timing alone does not establish product attribution.

A modern system can divide work among dedicated neural-processing hardware, the main processor, local memory, and cloud infrastructure. Datakalab’s expertise is most directly relevant to making certain workloads efficient at the edge; it does not demonstrate that Apple intends to run every AI task locally.

- Product integration: No specific Apple product or feature has been reliably linked to Datakalab.
- European regulatory status: Reporting identified the transaction through a European Commission filing. That should not be described as proof of a publicly announced merger-clearance decision without a specific approval document.
Apple commonly says that it periodically buys smaller technology companies and does not discuss its plans. The absence of a detailed announcement is therefore consistent with Apple’s usual acquisition approach, but it leaves the strategic details uncertain.
Why the date matters
This is not a new 2026 acquisition. The reported closing date was December 17, 2023, and the story was made public on April 22, 2024. Articles or social posts using present-tense language such as “Apple acquires Datakalab” can make the transaction appear more recent than it is.
The deal is best viewed as a quiet, capability-focused acquisition of a small specialist in efficient computer vision and embedded AI. It fits Apple’s broader interest in controlling the technologies that make machine learning practical on its hardware, but the undisclosed terms and lack of product attribution mean its direct impact on Apple’s roadmap remains unknown.
