Apple Pay’s October 2024 announcement covered two separate changes: more third-party installment choices at eligible online and in-app checkouts, and a planned way for some U.S. customers to see a PayPal balance when using a PayPal debit card in Apple Wallet. These are not the same feature, and Apple is not the lender.
What Apple announced
On October 17, 2024, Apple said eligible customers would gain additional installment options when paying online or in apps with Apple Pay. It also said that, beginning in 2025, U.S. customers would be able to see their PayPal balance when using a PayPal debit card in Apple Wallet.
The details matter: installment financing comes from providers such as Affirm, Klarna, or Monzo Flex, while PayPal balance visibility concerns a specific debit-card experience. Apple did not announce a general PayPal-account balance inside Wallet or a universal Apple Pay financing product.

Apple also identified future issuer- and provider-based installment support in selected markets, including options involving Citi, Synchrony, Fiserv-participating issuers, ANZ, DBS, CaixaBank, HSBC, NewDay, and Zilch. That list was a roadmap, not a guarantee that every provider or card would be available to every customer.
What “PayPal balance visible” actually means
The PayPal part of the announcement is narrower than the headline may suggest. Apple said that U.S. customers would be able to see their PayPal balance when using a PayPal debit card in Apple Wallet.
That wording does not establish that:
- every PayPal account balance will appear in Wallet;
- PayPal becomes a universal Apple Pay funding source;
- PayPal Credit, PayPal Pay Later, PayPal Savings, or other sub-balances will be displayed; or
- users can add money to PayPal, transfer funds, or manage the account from Apple Wallet.
The announcement said this would begin in 2025. Based on the official material available for this article, the original announcement confirms the plan but does not independently confirm the feature’s current rollout or exact availability as of August 18, 2026. Check current Apple Pay and PayPal documentation before assuming it is available on your account.

How Apple Pay installments are supposed to work
- Add or select an eligible card in Apple Wallet.
- Shop at a participating website or app and choose Apple Pay at checkout.
- Look for an installment or flexible-payment option, if the transaction qualifies.
- Complete the provider’s application, authentication, and approval process.
- Review the repayment schedule and complete the purchase only after checking the total cost and terms.
The exact screen and wording can vary by provider, merchant, device, and software version. Seeing an offer is not the same as being approved.
Is Apple providing the loan?
No. Apple Pay is the checkout and wallet interface. The relevant lender or payment provider supplies the financing and decides eligibility, approval, repayment terms, interest, fees, and consequences of missed payments. Apple’s announcement says installment offers may not be available in every market or for every purchase type, including some subscriptions and recurring transactions.
This is also separate from Apple Pay Later, which was a distinct Apple product with its own lending and repayment disclosures.

Requirements and reasons an option may not appear
For the announced online and in-app installment feature, Apple specified an iPhone or iPad running iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or later. Software alone is not enough. Availability can also depend on:
- your country or region;
- the participating merchant and checkout flow;
- the selected card, bank, or issuer;
- the purchase category and whether it is recurring;
- the provider’s eligibility rules and approval decision; and
- whether the feature has rolled out to your account or region.
If no option appears, do not assume Apple Pay is malfunctioning. You may be outside the supported market, using an ineligible card, buying an excluded item, or shopping through a checkout that does not expose the provider’s offer. Check the provider’s eligibility and support information rather than repeatedly retrying the payment.
What changed for in-store payments later?
Apple’s June 2025 services announcement described a later expansion of installment offers for in-person Apple Pay purchases. For the United States, Apple named Affirm, Cash App Afterpay, Klarna, Synchrony, and U.S. Bank. It named Monzo and Klarna for the United Kingdom and Klarna for Canada.

This was a separate, later expansion. It should not be read back into the October 2024 announcement, which focused on online and in-app checkout. Apple’s announcement also does not prove that every named provider is available to every customer or transaction today.

Installments can make an eligible purchase easier to budget, but more payment choices can also encourage impulse spending or several overlapping loans. A PayPal balance display, if available, is informational: it does not turn PayPal funds into installment financing.
Bottom line
Apple Pay is becoming a more flexible checkout layer for third-party financing and issuer-based payment plans. In the original U.S. and U.K. online/in-app announcement, the named options were Affirm, Klarna, and Monzo Flex, subject to merchant, card, provider, purchase, software, country, and user eligibility. The PayPal announcement was much narrower: a planned U.S. balance display tied to a PayPal debit card in Apple Wallet—not full PayPal-account integration and not an Apple loan.
