Apple offered discounts of up to 2,300 yuan—about $318 at the exchange rate cited at the time—on selected iPhones in mainland China from May 20 through May 28, 2024. The largest reduction applied to the 1TB iPhone 15 Pro Max, so this was a targeted, time-limited promotion rather than a permanent price cut across Apple’s iPhone range.
Because the promotion ended in 2024, shoppers should not treat the reported $318 saving as a current Apple China price. Later promotions occurred in 2025 and 2026, but their discounts, eligibility rules and funding sources differed.

Similar promotions were also reported through Apple’s presence on JD.com. The May campaign was notably deeper than Apple’s February 2024 China promotion, which reportedly offered discounts of up to 1,150 yuan. Reuters reporting via Investing.com described the May markdowns as applying to selected models and configurations, not every iPhone.

Which iPhones received the biggest discounts?
The headline maximum matters because it was tied to a specific configuration: the 1TB iPhone 15 Pro Max. It does not mean that every iPhone was 2,300 yuan cheaper.

Apple’s original mainland-China launch prices provide useful context. The iPhone 15 started at 5,999 yuan, the iPhone 15 Plus at 6,999 yuan, the iPhone 15 Pro at 7,999 yuan and the iPhone 15 Pro Max at 9,999 yuan. Apple’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus announcement and Pro-model announcement document those launch prices.
Those figures should not be confused with the final checkout price during the 2024 campaign. A platform coupon, bank promotion, trade-in credit or subsidy may have affected what an individual buyer actually paid.
Why was Apple discounting iPhones in China?
The clearest competitive reason was pressure from Huawei. Huawei’s Mate 60 series and Pura 70 series strengthened the company’s position in China’s premium smartphone market, where Apple had traditionally been particularly strong.

Apple was also operating in a difficult market environment. Demand was weaker, consumers were more price-sensitive and major Chinese online shopping promotions created pressure on manufacturers to offer visible discounts. Cutting selected prices gave Apple a way to support demand without formally resetting the listed price of every iPhone worldwide.
The move therefore looks more like a tactical defense of Apple’s China business than an abandonment of its premium strategy. A short campaign can make a product more competitive during a key sales period while preserving a higher official price outside the promotion.
Did the previous discounting help sales?
Apple’s China shipments reportedly fell 37% during January and February 2024, then rose 12% in March. Those figures were Reuters’ calculations based on data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology. The Reuters report connected the timing with Apple’s efforts to support demand.

That pattern suggests earlier promotions may have helped stabilize sales, but it does not prove that discounts alone caused the March rebound. Shipment figures can also be affected by product launches, inventory, channel activity, seasonality and broader market conditions.

Apple’s official Tmall storefront advertised the 2024 offer, but that fact alone does not establish who funded every yuan of the reduction. The effective price shown on an e-commerce platform can combine an Apple markdown with platform coupons, bank incentives, trade-in credits or public subsidies.
This distinction matters financially. If Apple funds a discount directly, its realized selling price and potentially its gross margin are affected. If a platform or subsidy funds part of the saving, the impact on Apple may be smaller. Later reporting on China promotions explicitly noted uncertainty over whether discounts came from Apple, e-commerce platforms, government subsidies or a combination of sources. Reuters’ 2025 coverage illustrates why an advertised checkout saving should not automatically be described as an Apple-funded price cut.

How the China promotions developed afterward
The 2024 campaign was not the last time Apple’s iPhones were promoted in China:
- May 2024: Selected iPhone 15 models were advertised at discounts of up to 2,300 yuan during the May 20–28 campaign.
- May 2025: Chinese e-commerce platforms reportedly advertised savings of up to 2,530 yuan—about $351—on selected iPhone 16 listings. Some effective prices included platform coupons and government subsidies, so they were not necessarily direct Apple markdowns.
- May 2026: Ahead of the 618 shopping festival, Apple’s official Tmall store was reported to offer direct discounts of about 1,000 yuan on selected iPhone 17 Pro models. Platform promotions and trade-in incentives could produce larger effective savings on some configurations.

- Exact model and storage: The 2,300-yuan maximum applied to a particular high-capacity iPhone 15 Pro Max configuration. Confirm the storage tier, color and model number.
- Direct discount versus effective price: Check whether the advertised amount requires a Tmall or JD.com coupon, bank offer, trade-in, government subsidy or another condition.
- Promotion expiry: The specific 2024 campaign ended on May 28, 2024. A historical article or cached listing is not proof that the same price remains available.
- Seller identity: Verify that the listing is Apple’s official store or an authorized online reseller. Apple provides an authorized online reseller directory.
- Trade-in terms: Trade-in value is separate from an instant promotional discount and depends on the old device’s model and condition. Apple says its China Trade In process can be completed online or in a store, and online processing may take three to five business days. See Apple’s China Trade In page.
- China-market compatibility: A mainland-China iPhone can have model-specific hardware, software, cellular, eSIM, warranty and service characteristics. Anyone planning to use it outside China should verify the precise model before buying rather than assume international compatibility.
- Inventory: The deepest price may apply only to selected configurations or fulfillment locations, and promotional stock can sell out.
What the discount meant for Apple
For Apple, the benefits were straightforward: a lower effective price could protect unit demand, improve competitiveness against Huawei and take advantage of high-traffic shopping events. The risks were equally clear. Frequent promotions can train customers to wait for sales, weaken the perception of fixed premium pricing and reduce margins if Apple funds the markdown itself.

The promotion is evidence of pressure in an important market, but it is not by itself proof of a company-wide crisis or that Apple had lost its premium position. It shows that Apple was willing to use targeted price support when competitive and market conditions made the normal price harder to defend.
Where to verify current prices
For current China-market pricing, use Apple’s official iPhone purchasing page, the official Tmall or JD.com store, and Apple’s authorized-reseller directory. Compare the final eligible checkout price—not only the headline discount—and keep direct markdowns separate from trade-in credit, subsidies and platform coupons.
