Apple’s redesigned Security Bounty program pays less for several standalone macOS findings while sharply increasing rewards for advanced exploit chains, browser attacks, wireless attacks and other high-impact research. The changes took effect in November 2025 after Apple announced the overhaul on October 10.

The evidence supports a narrower conclusion than “Apple is abandoning Mac security”: Apple is changing its incentives toward complete, demonstrable attack chains—many of which resemble sophisticated iPhone spyware attacks—while macOS remains eligible for substantial rewards.

What Apple changed

The reported Mac reductions came from security researcher Csaba Fitzl, whose comparison was reported by Macworld. Fitzl said full TCC-bypass rewards fell from approximately $30,500 to $5,000, individual TCC categories from $5,000–$10,000 to $1,000, and macOS sandbox escapes from $10,000 to $5,000.

Those comparisons should not be treated as a perfectly like-for-like price list. Apple changed both reward amounts and category definitions, and the current program places greater emphasis on the demonstrated outcome, attack path and proof of impact.

Apple’s current categories show the operative rewards. They are maximums or eligibility examples, not guaranteed payments:

Area Current published maximum or reward signal
Zero-click remote attack to kernel $2 million
Zero-click remote attack to user space $350,000
One-click remote attack to kernel $1 million
Wireless proximity attack to application processor $1 million
Physical access to sensitive data $500,000
App sandbox escape to kernel $500,000
Browser attack to kernel $1 million
WebContent sandbox escape $300,000
Complete macOS Gatekeeper bypass $100,000
Limited-interaction macOS Gatekeeper bypass Up to $10,000
macOS TCC Target Flag using an unsandboxed app $5,000
macOS TCC Target Flag plus App Sandbox escape $10,000
TCC-protected data access without the Target Flag $1,000
macOS-only sandbox escape $5,000

The full table is maintained by Apple Security Bounty. A report’s payout can depend on the affected software and hardware, prerequisites, exploit reliability, current-version status and the impact actually demonstrated.

Why the program looks more focused on iPhone attacks

Apple increased several of its largest rewards for attack paths associated with advanced mobile exploitation. According to Apple’s announcement, the maximum for a zero-click remote chain rose from $1 million to $2 million; one-click chains rose from $250,000 to $1 million; wireless-proximity attacks rose from $250,000 to $1 million; physical access to a locked device rose from $250,000 to $500,000; and certain app-sandbox-to-system-level bypasses rose from $150,000 to $500,000.

These are the kinds of chains commonly associated with mercenary spyware: a remote or wireless entry point, exploitation of a browser or messaging component, privilege escalation and access to protected data. Apple says it has observed system-level iOS attacks in the wild and wants researchers to investigate complete attack paths rather than isolated technical primitives.

Macworld also reported researcher Andrew Poole’s observation that iOS rewards had increased while several macOS-only categories had fallen. That makes an iPhone-focused interpretation reasonable. It remains an interpretation, however—not an official statement that Apple wants researchers to stop working on macOS.

Apple’s stated rationale

Apple says modern attacks increasingly rely on multi-stage exploit chains and that stronger platform defenses make advanced exploit development more difficult and time-consuming. Its redesigned program therefore emphasizes:

  • Remote, wireless and browser-based entry points.
  • Reliable privilege escalation.
  • Access to sensitive data.
  • Bypasses of meaningful security boundaries.
  • Complete exploits with verifiable real-world impact.
  • Research that can identify sophisticated attack paths before release.

Apple has not said that the Mac reductions were intended to save money, nor has it said that macOS is no longer strategically important. The company’s published explanation is framed around threat alignment, exploit-chain difficulty and outcome-based rewards.

Mac research still has meaningful reward paths

Apple has not removed macOS from the program. A complete macOS Gatekeeper bypass can qualify for up to $100,000, and the table still includes TCC and sandbox categories. A Mac finding may also qualify under a broader cross-platform category if it forms part of a qualifying remote, browser or privilege-escalation chain.

The Gatekeeper increase is particularly important. Coverage focused only on lower TCC and sandbox figures can miss Apple’s effort to encourage research into the Mac’s primary defense against malicious software.

Apple’s current program also covers iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, visionOS and related services. Target Flags are not limited to iPhone. Apple documents a Commpage Target Flag for demonstrating register control, arbitrary read/write or code execution, and a TCC Target Flag for demonstrating modification of the user or system TCC database. Researchers can check the relevant TCC integrity flag with:

What the change means for researchers

The revised economics favor research that begins with current hardware and current operating systems and ends with a reproducible, high-impact result. Researchers are likely to receive the strongest consideration when they can demonstrate a complete chain, remote or browser-based entry, meaningful boundary bypasses, privilege escalation or confirmed access to protected data.

A narrow macOS-only primitive may be less commercially attractive if it does not lead to a higher-value outcome. The same is true of a theoretical TCC weakness without proof of meaningful protected-data access or a sandbox escape that produces no additional impact.

Apple’s guidelines generally require the first complete and actionable report submitted directly to Apple, a reliable reproduction method or working exploit, and impact on the latest publicly available version for the relevant product category. Reports must not be publicly disclosed before Apple releases a relevant security update. Apple says reports are generally resolved within 90 days, although that is not a guaranteed deadline.

Target Flags can provide objective evidence of exploitability and may qualify an eligible report for accelerated payment before a fix is released. They do not guarantee a bounty: the report must still satisfy Apple’s eligibility and impact requirements.

Could lower Mac rewards make macOS less secure?

There is no evidence yet that Apple’s reward changes have caused more macOS vulnerabilities, more malware or a measurable decline in Mac security. Bounty amounts are incentive signals, not direct measurements of the probability or severity of attacks.

The concern is nevertheless plausible. The incentive chain would be:

  1. A lower reward reduces the expected return for a class of Mac research.
  2. Some independent researchers devote less time to that class.
  3. Apple receives fewer submissions or less diverse external scrutiny.
  4. Unidentified weaknesses could remain exposed longer if internal research does not compensate.

That is a risk argument, not proof of an outcome. Higher iPhone rewards could also attract top researchers to attack surfaces Apple considers especially consequential, potentially improving security where sophisticated attacks are most likely. The eventual balance cannot be determined from the reward table alone.

What Mac users and administrators should do

The bounty changes do not create a new consumer setting or require a special response. Mac users should continue installing macOS and Apple security updates promptly, leave built-in protections such as Gatekeeper enabled, and treat unexpected downloads and Terminal commands cautiously.

Lockdown Mode remains relevant for people facing unusually sophisticated or targeted threats, although its restrictions can affect normal functionality. Enterprise administrators should monitor Apple security advisories, maintain a timely patch process and avoid using bounty values as a substitute for vulnerability intelligence.

A $5,000 category does not mean a vulnerability is five times less important to users than a $25,000 category. The amount reflects Apple’s incentive structure, category rules and assessment of research impact—not a simple risk score.

Apple’s program in context

Apple launched its public Apple Security Bounty program in 2020. In its 2025 announcement, the company said it had awarded more than $35 million to more than 800 security researchers. Apple’s current headline maximum is $2 million, with bonuses potentially pushing the maximum payout above $5 million. Bonuses can also apply to qualifying beta-software findings and Lockdown Mode bypasses.

The central change is therefore not simply “Mac rewards down, iPhone rewards up.” Apple has redesigned the categories to favor complete and current exploit chains, while changing how standalone findings are valued. Comparisons with older figures should account for those changed definitions.

Bottom line

Apple has reduced the current published reward for several standalone macOS findings, according to its revised categories and researcher comparisons. At the same time, it has sharply increased rewards for remote, browser, wireless and other exploit chains associated with sophisticated attacks—especially those seen in iPhone spyware campaigns.

The strongest conclusion is that Apple is reallocating bounty emphasis toward complete, high-impact attack paths across its platforms. It has not abandoned macOS, and there is not yet evidence that the changes have made Macs less secure. For researchers, the best opportunities now favor current systems, reliable chains and demonstrated impact; for users and administrators, prompt updating and sensible security practices remain the practical response.
