Apple did cut many of its maximum U.S. trade-in estimates on or around November 6, 2025. The largest reported reductions included $160 for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, $145 for the iMac Pro, and $115 for the iMac. But the change was not universal: some products were unchanged, the iPad Air increased by $15, and a dramatic Mac Pro increase appears to have been a listing error.
Important: these are historical November 2025 figures, not guaranteed or necessarily current offers. Apple revised many estimates upward again in May 2026. Check Apple’s live trade-in estimator for the value of your exact device before making a decision.
The November 2025 cuts were real, but the headline needs qualification
Apple revised maximum “up to” trade-in estimates across its major U.S. hardware categories: iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and selected Android devices. The November update was reported by 9to5Mac.
However, “across its entire product line” overstates what happened. Apple did not reduce every individual model, and the published figures were ceilings rather than typical payouts. The final credit depends on the exact model, storage, configuration, serial number, and condition.

The iPhone 15 family and older iMac models absorbed the most consequential dollar reductions among ordinary products. 9to5Mac described the overall adjustment as averaging about 20%, but that characterization should not be treated as a universal rate for every model or configuration.

The iPad Air increase and unchanged iPad Pro are why the November event should be described as a broad repricing, not a blanket cut.

The table’s generic “MacBook” category becoming ineligible did not make all Mac laptops ineligible: MacBook Air and MacBook Pro remained listed, with $10 reductions in their maximum estimates.

The Mac Pro figure of $2,520 was so far above the previous $550 maximum that the reporting flagged it as likely erroneous. It should not be treated as a confirmed payout or a dependable basis for a financial decision without a matching quote from Apple.

Apple later raised many values again
Apple’s trade-in estimates change over time, so the November table is a historical snapshot. Later reporting in May 2026 showed increases for many current devices, although some models declined or remained unchanged.
Examples included the iPhone 16 Pro Max rising from $685 to $695, the iPhone 16 Pro from $550 to $560, the iPhone 16 from $435 to $460, the iPad Pro from $670 to $690, the MacBook Air from $485 to $520, and the Mac mini from $340 to $375. Apple’s displayed amount is an estimate for a qualifying device in the relevant configuration and condition. It is not a guaranteed payout. Apple says the final value can change after inspection if the device does not match the description provided.

- Configuration matters: storage, screen size, chip, connectivity, and model year can change the estimate.
- Condition matters: cosmetic damage, broken components, battery problems, or other functional defects may reduce the offer or make the device ineligible.
- Identification matters: iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch estimates may require the serial number.
- Inspection matters: an Apple Store assessment can differ from an online estimate.
- Recycling remains available: an ineligible device may still be accepted for free recycling.
What happens after you accept an online estimate?
Apple generally expects the old device to arrive within 14 days of your receiving the new device. The overall online process generally takes two to three weeks, and credit processing may take three to five business days after verification.
If inspection lowers the value, Apple may offer a revised amount. You can accept or reject it. If you reject the revised offer, Apple says it will return the old device and charge the original trade-in amount where applicable. If the device is worth more than the new purchase, the excess may be issued as an Apple Gift Card.
Apple Trade In versus selling elsewhere
Apple is often the easiest option, but convenience is not the same as maximum cash. Compare the net result for your exact device rather than comparing Apple’s maximum estimate with a private seller’s gross asking price.

- Check at least one comparison destination, such as Swappa, eBay, Back Market, or Best Buy Trade-In.
- Match the same model, storage, cellular status, carrier unlock status, and condition.
- Subtract platform fees, shipping, payment fees, likely returns, and the value of your time from any private-sale price.
- Choose the option with the best combination of net proceeds, reliability, and effort.

Before sending an Apple device
- Confirm the exact model, storage, connectivity, and serial number.
- Check Apple’s current estimate, not an archived table.
- Compare the net value of selling elsewhere.
- Back up your data.
- Sign out of your Apple Account and disable Find My.
- Erase all personal content and settings.
- Photograph the device, its condition, and its serial number.
- Package and ship it within Apple’s stated deadline.
- Keep the tracking number, inspection notices, and final acceptance records.
Should you trade in now?
- Choose Apple Trade In if you prioritize convenience, are buying another Apple product, or want a simple store or online process.
- Compare a private sale first if you have a recent, unlocked device in excellent condition and are willing to manage buyers, shipping, and fees.
- Seek a repair-aware buyback quote if the device is damaged; Apple’s estimate may fall substantially or become unavailable after inspection.
- If Apple revises your offer, compare the revised amount with the realistic net proceeds from another buyer before accepting.
Apple has not publicly established a definitive reason for each adjustment in the cited coverage. Changes could reflect resale economics, inventory, demand, or other pricing considerations, but those remain possibilities rather than confirmed explanations.
