Apple was Japan’s leading smartphone vendor in calendar 2020, but 47.3% is not the only published estimate of its share. A Japan Fair Trade Commission paper citing IDC puts Apple at 47.3% of smartphones sold; Japan’s MM Research Institute (MMRI) reports 46.5% of smartphone shipments. Both estimates put Apple first, but they describe market activity during the year—not the share of phones already in use, operating-system use, or smartphone revenue.
What does the 47.3% figure mean?
The 47.3% figure is attributed to IDC in a discussion paper published by Japan’s Fair Trade Commission (JFTC). The paper describes Apple’s share of smartphones sold in Japan during 2020. It is a calendar-year market estimate, not a count of Japanese residents who owned an iPhone. Read the JFTC discussion paper.
“Largest smartphone brand” is best understood here as the leading vendor by share of units sold or shipped during the stated period. It does not mean Apple had the same share of all active phones, iOS use, or industry revenue. Annual sales and shipments measure devices entering the market; an installed-base statistic counts devices that remain in use, including phones bought in earlier years.

MMRI’s calendar-year 2020 estimate gives Apple 13.984 million smartphone shipments and a 46.5% share. MMRI also says Apple was the top vendor for the ninth consecutive calendar year. Contemporary coverage reproducing IDC’s annual figures likewise reports 46.5%, while the JFTC paper attributes 47.3% to IDC. MMRI’s calendar-year 2020 release provides the shipment estimate.

The sources agree on the main point: Apple led the Japanese smartphone market that year. They do not establish why the percentages differ. Different definitions, channel coverage, data collection, or revisions could contribute, but the available material does not identify the cause. Treat each figure as a source-specific estimate rather than combining them or presenting 47.3% as an uncontested total. MacRumors’ summary of IDC’s figures also distinguishes the annual result from the fourth quarter.
How did Apple compare with other brands?
Rankings and shares depend on the tracker, so figures from different firms should not be blended into one table. In MMRI’s calendar-year ranking, Apple was first, followed by Sharp, Samsung, Sony Mobile, and Fujitsu Connected Technologies. A contemporary report reproducing IDC annual figures gave Apple 46.5%, Sharp 13.3%, Fujitsu 8.3%, Samsung 8.1%, and Kyocera 7.5%. These are separate datasets, not a single comparable ranking.

The result is notable because Apple led a market that also included established Japanese manufacturers such as Sharp, Fujitsu, Kyocera, and Sony. The ranking describes competition for new smartphone units in 2020; it does not show that every Japanese consumer preferred Apple.
Why was Apple’s share higher in the fourth quarter?
IDC figures reproduced by MacRumors put Apple at 52.6% of Japan’s smartphone sales in Q4 2020, with approximately 6.015 million units. The same report lists Sharp at 12.4%, Kyocera at 7.0%, Samsung at 6.8%, and Sony at 6.4%. That quarterly share is not the full-year figure: it covers only October through December, when the iPhone 12 lineup had arrived.

The iPhone 12 launch followed a later-than-usual schedule in 2020, so its Q4 performance should not be projected across the whole year. What products and market conditions mattered?
The 2020 result coincided with demand for both a lower-priced iPhone and Apple’s new 5G models, alongside the unusual timing and disruption of the pandemic year. The available figures point to several contributing factors, but do not isolate how much each one added to Apple’s annual share.

iPhone SE (2020)
Counterpoint Research reported that the iPhone SE represented 26% of Japan’s total smartphone market in Q3 2020 in its dataset. The model gave consumers a less expensive route into the iPhone line at a time when lower- and mid-priced segments were expanding. iPhone 12 and 5G
Apple’s 5G iPhone 12 lineup arrived late in 2020, helping frame the sharp difference between Apple’s reported Q4 share and its full-year average. The quarterly data show the timing of Apple’s strength; they do not prove that 5G alone caused it.

COVID-19 and changing demand
Counterpoint reported that Japan’s premium segment contracted in Q3 2020 while lower- and mid-price segments expanded. Apple’s share in that quarter was 45%, down from 50% in Q3 2019, even as the iPhone SE performed strongly. The later iPhone 12 launch came in Q4. Together, these details help explain why quarterly results could differ, but they do not establish that one product or market condition alone determined the year’s outcome.

The 2020 figures above refer to January through December 2020 unless identified otherwise. MMRI also published a fiscal 2020 result covering April 2020 through March 2021, in which Apple was the leading smartphone manufacturer. That period crosses two calendar years and should not be used as if it were the same measurement as calendar 2020. MMRI’s fiscal 2020 release.
