Yes. Apple is training U.S. businesses through the Apple Manufacturing Academy, a free program run with Michigan State University. It focuses on practical uses of artificial intelligence, automation and smart manufacturing, particularly for small and midsize manufacturers. Apple said the academy had supported more than 150 American businesses as of May 5, 2026. That is a meaningful supply-chain initiative, but it does not mean Apple is moving all its product assembly to the United States.
What the Apple Manufacturing Academy teaches
The academy pairs Apple engineers with Michigan State University faculty and experts to help businesses apply technology to real production challenges. Its subjects include factory-floor AI and automation, smart manufacturing, process optimization, productivity and quality improvement, and project management. Apple announced the Detroit academy in July 2025 and said it would open on August 19 of that year. Its initial curriculum included hands-on learning and consultation, and Apple later added virtual programming to reach businesses beyond Michigan. Apple’s Detroit opening announcement describes the initial program; its May 2026 update emphasizes AI, automation and smart manufacturing.
This is not described as a conventional apprenticeship or trade-school credential. Apple’s materials discuss courses, workshops, forums, demonstrations, expert support and practical implementation, but do not publish a standard program length, credential, job-placement service or completion rate.
Who can take part?
The academy is aimed especially at small and midsize American manufacturers. Apple says it is open to businesses nationwide, not only companies already making Apple products. Suppliers and prospective suppliers may benefit, but participation does not appear to be limited to them. Nationwide access includes virtual programming; the Detroit academy is not evidence of in-person campuses in every state.

Apple reported that the academy was supporting more than 130 small and midsize U.S. manufacturers in February 2026, then said it had supported more than 150 American businesses by May 5, 2026. Those are company-reported figures. Apple has not published a complete participant list, detailed selection criteria or a breakdown of how many participants later became suppliers.
Practical training, but limited public outcome data
Apple presents the coursework as connected to participants’ actual operations. One example in its 2026 update is Block Imaging, a Michigan business that services and refurbishes medical-imaging equipment. Apple says the company used academy learning to modernize operations and improve efficiency.

That example is useful, but it is not an independent measurement of the academy’s overall impact. Apple has not disclosed independently verified productivity gains, job creation attributable specifically to the academy, or results across all participants. Training can help a company identify opportunities; successfully deploying AI or automation may still require clean production data, compatible machinery, cybersecurity protections, technical staff and investment in equipment or integration.

Detroit academy and planned Houston center are different efforts
The established Apple Manufacturing Academy began in Detroit in August 2025, in partnership with Michigan State University. The academy also held a Spring Forum at Michigan State in East Lansing in 2026. Virtual offerings extend its reach beyond those Michigan locations.

Apple separately announced an Advanced Manufacturing Center in Houston, intended to provide hands-on training for students, supplier employees and U.S. businesses. The center is linked to Apple’s planned Houston expansion: Apple said Mac mini production would begin there later in 2026 and that the site would also expand production of advanced AI servers. The announcement establishes a plan, not that the training center was already operating as of August 18, 2026. Apple said the Houston operations would create thousands of jobs; that claim concerns the broader Houston manufacturing expansion, not jobs shown to have been created by the academy. How training fits into Apple’s U.S. manufacturing strategy
The academy is one part of a broader effort to expand U.S. manufacturing capacity and supplier relationships. Apple raised its announced U.S. commitment to $600 billion in August 2025 and introduced its American Manufacturing Program (AMP) as part of that strategy. The figure is an announced commitment covering multiple initiatives over time, not money spent on the academy alone. Apple’s earlier February 2025 announcement had described a commitment of more than $500 billion over four years; the later announcement increased the headline total. AMP is not another name for the academy. The academy provides training and capability-building; AMP is a broader supplier and manufacturing investment program. In March 2026, Apple named Bosch, Cirrus Logic, TDK and Qnity Electronics as new AMP partners and said it planned to spend $400 million on those new programs through 2030. The announcement also described a wider set of manufacturing partners, including companies working in semiconductors, materials and components. - It does not mean every Apple product is being made in the United States. Announced U.S. activity involves selected components, materials, servers and products, including planned Mac mini production in Houston. Apple’s supply chain remains global.
- It does not guarantee an Apple contract. The academy is framed as help for U.S. businesses; the available announcements do not promise supplier status or purchasing agreements.
- It does not mean every supplier receives training. Apple’s reported participant totals cover businesses supported by the academy, while AMP partner announcements identify investment relationships. The categories should not be conflated.
- Free instruction does not make implementation cost-free. Apple describes the academy as free, but companies may still need to budget employee time, travel for in-person sessions, equipment, software, integration and ongoing system support.
What a manufacturer should check before participating
A U.S. business considering the academy should confirm current eligibility and enrollment details directly with the program, since Apple has not published a full set of admission criteria in its announcements. It should also check whether relevant sessions are virtual or require travel, how much staff time is involved, and whether the curriculum addresses the company’s equipment and production data. For any proposed AI or automation project, estimate post-training costs and account for data security, maintenance and worker training before treating a suggested efficiency gain as a guaranteed return.
