Apple has not committed to absorbing rising processor costs indefinitely—and the evidence already shows that its cost buffer has limits. On June 25, 2026, Apple raised prices on numerous Mac and iPad products after memory and storage costs rose sharply. The increases were primarily linked to demand from AI data centers, rather than to Apple’s main A-series and M-series processors alone.
As of August 16, 2026, the most accurate outlook is selective pass-through: Apple may continue absorbing some increases, but higher prices, reduced promotions, configuration changes, and greater pressure on premium models are more likely than permanent price protection.
What changed in Apple’s pricing
Apple initially shielded customers from much of the component-cost inflation. But on June 25, it increased prices across many Mac and iPad products, saying unusually rapid increases in memory and storage costs had become too large to absorb indefinitely.

Reported increases across affected products ranged from approximately $30 to $1,300, depending on the product and configuration. The changes included MacBook Neo, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac Studio, iPad models and configurations, HomePod mini, and other products.

These figures are configuration-specific, and Apple’s live store should be checked before purchasing. The June update did not raise the prices of iPhone, Apple Watch, or AirPods at that time. That is a current snapshot, not a promise that those products will remain unchanged.
Reuters reported on Apple’s Mac and iPad price increases, while the Associated Press documented the MacBook Neo change.
“Processor prices” is too broad
The phrase “processor price increases” oversimplifies what is happening. Apple’s products contain several important categories of silicon and other components:
- Application processors: Apple-designed A-series and M-series chips that provide central processing and graphics performance.
- Memory: DRAM used alongside the processor.
- Storage: NAND flash and SSD capacity used for applications and files.
- Supporting silicon: Modems, wireless chips, power-management components, display drivers, and related hardware.
- Non-chip costs: Manufacturing, transportation, tariffs, currency movements, and other supply-chain expenses.
Apple’s regulatory filing specifically identified rising costs and supply constraints involving advanced semiconductors, NAND, and DRAM. That does not establish that Apple’s central CPU and GPU dies were the sole or even primary cause of the June price increases.
Apple’s Form 10-Q also warns that component costs, supply constraints, tariffs, and broader economic conditions can affect product pricing, gross margin, revenue, and demand.

How the AI boom affects consumer-device prices
The connection to AI is mainly a capacity and competition problem:
- Cloud providers and AI companies build more data centers.
- Those facilities require enormous quantities of high-performance memory, storage, and advanced semiconductor capacity.
- Suppliers allocate more production toward lucrative server and AI customers.
- Consumer-device manufacturers face tighter availability and higher input prices.
- Apple absorbs some of the increase, then passes through more of it when the pressure becomes too large or persistent.
Reuters reported sharp DRAM price increases in early 2026 and expectations of further increases. Apple’s filing also points to supply-demand imbalances, tariffs, currency movements, and macroeconomic conditions. AI demand is therefore a major reported driver of the memory and storage squeeze, but it is not the only cost channel.

Absorbing costs does not necessarily mean Apple loses money on every affected device. It can mean accepting a lower gross-margin percentage, lower gross profit per unit, less room for discounts, or slower earnings growth.
Apple can also offset higher component prices through:
- Scale and purchasing power
- Supplier agreements and inventory timing
- Product redesigns or component substitutions
- Changes to memory and storage configurations
- Higher-priced Pro, Max, and Ultra models
- Services revenue and operating-cost control
- Regional pricing and currency adjustments
Apple has not disclosed a product-by-product cost bridge showing exactly how much of the increase came from memory, storage, processors, tariffs, or other inputs. It would therefore be incorrect to claim that Apple’s entire margin has been sacrificed—or that its margins are fully protected.

Will iPhone prices rise next?
Further iPhone price increases are a risk, not a confirmed universal outcome. Tim Cook warned on June 17 that Apple would need to raise product prices because of rising memory and storage costs, but he did not specify which products or how much.
Several factors make the iPhone vulnerable. It uses the same broad memory and storage supply chain, and Apple said those costs were continuing to rise. A major iPhone launch also gives Apple a natural opportunity to reset pricing, storage tiers, or product specifications.
On the other hand, Apple may protect key entry prices to preserve competitiveness. It could raise premium models more than base models, alter storage tiers, use supplier contracts and existing inventory to delay the impact, or accept lower margins for a period.
Some analyst forecasts have suggested increases as high as $200 for Pro and Pro Max models. Those are estimates, not Apple guidance, and should not be treated as confirmed pricing. The Washington Post summarized some of those forecasts.
Strong sales do not remove the risk
Apple reported strong June-quarter results on July 30, including double-digit growth across iPhone, Mac, and Services. Strong demand gives Apple more room to pass through costs without immediately destroying sales.

But one strong quarter cannot prove that customers are indifferent to higher prices. Results can be influenced by product mix, launch timing, inventory, regional performance, customers buying ahead of expected increases, and temporary factors such as tariff refunds.
Investors should watch product revenue, gross-margin guidance, Pro-model mix, inventory, supply constraints, and demand after the June increases. The key question is whether Apple can preserve both gross-profit dollars and ecosystem demand—not simply whether it announces another price increase.

Tariffs overlap with the component-cost problem but should not be confused with it. Tariffs may apply to finished devices, components, or both. Depending on the policy and supply chain, the cost may be shared among Apple, suppliers, distributors, and customers.

Apple’s filing warns that additional semiconductor-sector tariffs and other trade measures could affect supply availability, pricing, margins, and financial results. The impact can also vary by country because of taxes, currency movements, exemptions, and local trade rules.

Reports that tariff refunds contributed to Apple’s third-quarter results represent temporary relief, not proof that underlying memory and storage inflation has disappeared. Axios covered the reported tariff refunds.
U.S. chip manufacturing will not immediately make devices cheaper
Apple is expanding its U.S. supply-chain commitments. It announced a multiyear agreement with Broadcom expected to exceed $30 billion and support production of more than 15 billion U.S.-made chips. Apple has also named companies including Amkor, Applied Materials, Coherent, Corning, GlobalFoundries, GlobalWafers America, Samsung, and Texas Instruments in its American Manufacturing Program.
That effort may improve resilience, reduce geopolitical exposure, and localize portions of the supply chain. It is not an immediate cure for higher consumer prices.

U.S. manufacturing can also carry higher labor, construction, and operating costs. Broadcom components are not the same as the DRAM and NAND capacity currently under pressure. Domestic production is therefore best viewed as a long-term supply-chain hedge rather than a guarantee of cheaper Macs, iPads, or iPhones.

What Apple buyers should do
Buy sooner when:
- You need a Mac or iPad soon and the model has already received a price increase.
- You need substantial memory or storage, where configuration-level increases can be larger in absolute dollars.
- You are considering a high-end Mac or iPad and can find legitimate old-price retailer inventory.
- You want to avoid uncertainty around an upcoming product refresh.
Wait when:
- The purchase is optional and a new generation may be near.
- You expect education pricing, refurbished inventory, or retailer promotions.
- You are considering an iPhone, Apple Watch, or AirPods whose price was unchanged in the June 25 update.
- You would rather accept price risk than buy an aging configuration.
Compare Apple’s direct price with authorized retailers, refurbished inventory, trade-in value, and the cost of upgrading memory or storage. A retailer may still hold inventory bought at an earlier wholesale price, but discounts can be temporary or unavailable for the configuration you need.
Also consider useful life. A cheaper base model with inadequate memory or storage may be worse value than a more expensive configuration that remains usable for several years. Conversely, paying for capacity you will never use simply to avoid a possible future increase is not automatically a good financial decision.
The outlook in three scenarios
- Costs normalize: Apple keeps current prices and gradually rebuilds its cost cushion.
- Costs remain high: Apple raises selected prices, especially for premium products and high-storage configurations, while preserving some strategic entry points.
- Costs worsen: Apple passes through more increases, reduces promotions, changes configurations, and risks slower unit demand.
The evidence as of August 16, 2026 supports the second scenario more strongly than the idea that Apple will indefinitely absorb all increases. Apple is likely to protect prices where demand and competition make them strategically important, while passing more costs into premium models, storage upgrades, and newly launched products.
