Apple has already ranked No. 1 in some global smartphone measurements, but it has not established an uncontested, sustained lead over Samsung. Counterpoint Research put Apple first in Q1 2026, then ranked Samsung first by shipments in Q2, with 24% share to Apple’s 20%. IDC’s Q1 ranking also put Samsung ahead. The answer depends on the quarter, the research firm and what “number one” measures.
What “number one smartphone maker” means
A ranking is only meaningful when it specifies the metric and period. “Smartphone sales” is often used loosely, even though industry trackers may estimate different stages of the market.
- Shipments: Phones sent into distribution channels. This is the basis of the Q2 2026 ranking and shares cited here from Counterpoint.
- Sell-through: Devices actually sold to consumers. It can differ from shipments when retailers or carriers build or reduce inventory.
- Revenue and profit: Financial measures, not unit counts. A company selling fewer, more expensive phones can lead financially while another ships more devices.
- Installed base: Active phones in use. This reflects accumulated purchases and replacement patterns, not just new devices in one quarter.
- Premium-market or regional leadership: A company may dominate a price tier or country without leading worldwide unit shipments.
So Apple can be commercially powerful, lead a premium segment, or rank first in a particular quarter without being the largest maker by annual global shipments.

The quarter-to-quarter change is a warning against treating one first-place ranking as a permanent takeover. Counterpoint’s Q1 result and its Q2 result are from the same firm, while IDC’s Q1 ranking shows that even the same quarter can produce different reported leaders across trackers.
Why research firms can disagree
Market rankings are estimates, not a universal live tally. Firms may differ in how they define and model shipments, which channels and markets they cover, how they treat inventory timing, and whether figures are preliminary or updated. A phone counted when it enters a channel may fall in a different reporting period from its eventual consumer sale.
Apple’s launch cycle also matters. A quarter with strong demand for a newly released iPhone can favor Apple, while another quarter can reflect Samsung’s broader portfolio or a different product calendar. To assess a claim, check the time period, measure, research firm, data status and geographic scope before comparing percentages.
Why Apple is gaining ground
Strong demand for the iPhone 17
Counterpoint’s Q1 2026 report, as summarized by MacRumors, associated Apple’s first-place result with strong iPhone 17 demand. A launch-driven surge can lift quarterly shipments, but it does not by itself prove that Apple will lead over a full year or keep the lead after initial demand passes.

Resilience in a shrinking market
IDC forecasts worldwide smartphone shipments to fall 13.9% in 2026, to about 1.09 billion units. It revised its expected Apple decline to 5.2%, from an earlier 8.1% decline. Those are forecasts, not final shipment results. If Apple’s shipments fall less sharply than the market, its share can rise even while it sells fewer iPhones than before. IDC’s 2026 market forecast.
Premium buyers and supply preparation
IDC points to Apple’s portfolio, preparation for memory supply constraints, stronger Chinese demand and the iPhone 17’s fit with premium upgrade behavior as factors behind its relative resilience. Buyers trading up can support high-priced devices even when consumers are cautious about replacing phones. Apple may also be better placed than budget-focused manufacturers to absorb component-cost pressure, although that advantage depends on its ability to secure supply and sustain demand.
China and other growth opportunities
IDC reported significant growth for the iPhone 17 series in China during Q1 2026. That is an encouraging period-specific result, not proof that Apple has resolved its competitive challenge there. Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo and Honor remain important domestic rivals, while local preferences, pricing, distribution and ecosystem loyalty can shape demand.
India, Japan and Southeast Asia also offer opportunities to broaden the upgrade pool. Yet strength in developed or premium markets does not automatically translate into the largest global unit volume: Apple’s reach in lower-priced tiers is narrower than Samsung’s and several Chinese brands’.

Why Samsung remains hard to displace
Samsung sells across a wider range of price points. Its premium Galaxy S and Z lines compete for high-end buyers, while Galaxy A models address mid-range and more price-sensitive customers. That breadth, combined with global distribution and a product calendar not dependent on one annual iPhone launch, can sustain shipment volume across different regions and quarters.
Samsung is not insulated from the market downturn. It is exposed to cost and margin pressure in lower-priced phones, and it competes with Chinese Android manufacturers in many of those segments. But portfolio breadth gives it more ways to reach buyers than a strategy concentrated in premium devices. In Counterpoint’s Q2 2026 estimates, that translated into the lead even as Apple’s shipments grew year over year.
How the memory shortage could reshape the rankings
DRAM and NAND are core components in smartphones. When their prices rise or supply tightens, manufacturers face a choice: absorb higher costs, raise retail prices, trim specifications or ship fewer devices. Entry-level and mid-range models generally have less margin to absorb a more expensive bill of materials, so component inflation can be especially disruptive there.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat pressure may favor vendors with pricing power, stronger supply access or a product mix tilted toward premium phones. It may also reduce total market shipments. Consequently, Apple could gain share during a severe market contraction without expanding iPhone unit sales; a higher share is not, on its own, proof of a growing business. Counterpoint reported that Q2 2026 global shipments fell 11% year over year, the weakest second quarter since 2013, while IDC’s full-year forecast anticipates a 13.9% decline. Those figures cover different periods and are not interchangeable.

Unit leadership is not the same as financial leadership
Shipments
This is where the current disagreement over the global crown is most visible: Counterpoint ranked Samsung first in Q2 2026 shipments, while Apple had led in its Q1 ranking.
Revenue and profit
Premium pricing can allow Apple to generate substantial revenue and profit without shipping the most phones. The figures in this article do not establish a comparable 2026 revenue or operating-profit ranking, so shipment shares should not be used as a proxy for financial leadership.
Model sales and installed base
Counterpoint reported that the iPhone 16 was the best-selling individual smartphone model in 2025 and that Apple occupied seven of the year’s top 10 model positions. That is a model-level ranking, not a count of all devices sold by each manufacturer: Samsung has a much broader lineup whose combined shipments matter for a brand ranking. An installed-base ranking is different again. It counts active devices accumulated over time, so it cannot be inferred from a single quarter’s shipment share or a best-selling model list.

Other makers that shape the global race
“Android” is an operating system, not one manufacturer. Samsung competes separately with Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo, Huawei, Honor, Transsion, Motorola, Google and others. Their positions vary by country and price tier.
- Xiaomi has scale in value-sensitive markets, including China, India, Southeast Asia, Latin America and Europe.
- OPPO and vivo are significant in China and other Asian markets.
- Huawei and Honor are important in China, where domestic brands compete closely for consumers.
- Transsion is especially relevant in Africa and lower-income markets.
- Motorola has a role in Latin America and selected value segments.
- Google Pixel is a premium Android alternative with much smaller global volume.
These rivals make a durable Apple unit lead more difficult: demand for affordable devices and strong regional brands can matter as much to global totals as success in the premium tier.
What would show that Apple can hold the lead?
A durable claim requires more than one quarterly ranking. The most useful indicators are:
- Q3 and Q4 2026 shipment rankings: They will show whether Apple’s strength persists beyond the quarter in which the iPhone 17 demand helped lift its position.
- Full-year results: Annual rankings reduce the risk of mistaking launch timing for a lasting lead.
- Research-firm consistency: Compare like with like—same provider, metric and data status—rather than splicing one firm’s quarterly estimate to another’s.
- China performance: Continued consumer demand across more than one quarter would be more persuasive evidence of a durable improvement than a single strong period.
- Supply and pricing: Memory availability and the extent to which Apple passes component costs to buyers could affect both shipments and demand.
- Samsung’s product cycle: Galaxy launches and foldable performance could shift quarterly competition, while its broad price coverage remains a structural advantage.
- Growth-market adoption: Progress in India and Southeast Asia would help Apple broaden its unit base beyond its strongest premium markets.
Verdict: Apple has a credible path, but not a settled crown
Apple has reached first place in some measurements, but the latest Counterpoint shipment estimate puts Samsung back ahead, and IDC’s Q1 ranking did not match Counterpoint’s. Apple’s relative resilience in a contracting market and its premium demand give it a credible chance to lead in some periods. Holding the global shipment crown across a full year is a higher bar: Samsung’s broad portfolio, regional reach and ability to compete at lower prices still make it the tougher volume rival.
