Yes—the shipment was real, but “$2 billion” was the value of the iPhones, not the amount Apple saved in tariffs. Reuters reported that Apple’s Indian suppliers shipped nearly $2 billion worth of iPhones to the United States in March 2025, including about 600 tons moved by chartered cargo aircraft. The reported purpose was to build U.S. inventory before threatened tariffs increased import costs.
What Apple actually shipped
Reuters reported an all-time monthly high for iPhone exports from India to the United States in March 2025. Customs-data reporting put the combined value at nearly $2 billion. Separate reporting from sources familiar with the operation said Apple chartered cargo flights carrying approximately 600 tons of iPhones.
The 600-ton shipment was estimated to represent as many as 1.5 million phones, based on packaged-device weight. That is an estimate, not a shipment count disclosed by Apple; pallets, protective materials and differences among models and packaging could change the total.

Reuters’ customs-data account attributed approximately $1.31 billion of the March exports to Foxconn and approximately $612 million to Tata Electronics. Those are supplier shipment figures, not Apple’s disclosed revenue or profit.

Why Apple paid for air freight
Air freight costs far more than shipping by sea. The reported calculation was therefore about the value of speed: getting finished phones into the United States before a threatened duty took effect could be worth more than waiting for cheaper ocean transport.
Sources told Reuters that Apple accelerated Indian production, added labor and temporarily extended operations at a major Foxconn facility to Sundays. Reporting also described an expedited customs process at Chennai airport that reduced clearance from roughly 30 hours to about six. The objective was to create a U.S. inventory cushion while officials debated tariff rates, start dates, exemptions and country treatment.
That does not establish that air freight cost less than the tariff in every case. The relevant comparison included expedited logistics, the risk of raising retail prices, potential lost sales and the value of keeping popular models available.

What “dodging tariffs” means—and does not mean
“Dodging” is shorthand for timing legitimate imports ahead of a possible duty or using a lower-tariff production route. It does not indicate smuggling, customs fraud or a permanent legal exemption. A phone’s treatment depends on its customs-entry date, tariff classification, country-of-origin rules, importer valuation and any exclusion or suspension in force.
- It may mean: entering inventory before a threatened duty applied, reducing near-term exposure on those units.
- It does not mean: Apple saved $2 billion, avoided every tariff, or eliminated future trade-policy risk.
The tariff math is not the savings
Contemporaneous April 2025 reporting referred to a proposed or announced 26% tariff on imports from India, while China-origin goods faced much higher threatened rates during the escalation. A simple calculation illustrates the scale: 26% of $2 billion is $520 million.
That $520 million is only a hypothetical gross calculation, not verified savings. It ignores the exact entry dates, product classifications, customs valuation, exclusions, inventory that may have faced different treatment and the fact that the $2 billion figure covered shipments from multiple suppliers and models. There is no evidence that Apple avoided $2 billion in duties.

Which iPhones were involved?
Coverage identified shipments involving several generations, including the iPhone 13, iPhone 14, iPhone 15, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e. Reports do not establish that every model appeared in equal quantities or that the same mix came from each supplier.

The March surge was reported as roughly equal to Foxconn’s India-to-U.S. exports during January and February combined, but the available reporting does not provide Apple’s U.S. sell-through, channel inventory or model mix. The size of the buffer therefore cannot responsibly be converted into a precise number of days.
Why India mattered
Apple had already been expanding iPhone assembly in India as part of a broader effort to reduce dependence on China. India’s tariff exposure was lower than China’s during the most acute phase of the 2025 announcements, making Indian production a useful alternative source for U.S.-bound inventory.

India was not an instant replacement for China. An iPhone depends on a large network of component and subassembly suppliers, tooling, logistics providers and skilled production capacity. Moving final assembly does not automatically change the origin of every component, and customs origin can involve more than the location of the last assembly step.
The episode showed the value of having an additional production option. It did not prove that Apple had moved its entire iPhone supply chain—or its dominant production base—from China to India.
What happened after the flights
The policy backdrop changed quickly. The administration later excluded smartphones and some other electronics from the initial reciprocal tariff regime, according to the Associated Press. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the carve-out was temporary and that electronics could be addressed through a separate semiconductor-related tariff structure. Axios reported similar warnings about the exemption’s status.

That sequence makes the airlift best understood as insurance against policy uncertainty. It could have delayed exposure on particular units even though the feared treatment was later softened. As of August 18, 2026, the available evidence establishes the 2025 episode and its immediate policy context, not the final or currently operative 2026 tariff treatment of iPhones.
What the move meant for iPhone prices
Building inventory may have helped Apple delay or reduce the immediate need for price increases, but Apple did not publicly attribute a retail-price decision to the airlift. Tariff costs can be absorbed or shared by Apple, suppliers, distributors, retailers and customers in different proportions.
Inventory also carries risks. Older models can lose demand when newer models launch, the stock mix may not match customer preferences, and Apple must finance and store the additional units. If an exemption arrives, expensive emergency air freight may look unnecessary in hindsight; if tariffs return, the buffer may buy only limited time.

The March shipment was a tactical bridge, not a structural solution. Air freight cannot solve future shipments, component tariffs, prolonged trade disputes or a shortage of Indian capacity. India diversification can reduce concentration risk while adding new labor, supplier, logistics and trade dependencies.
Apple’s prior investment in Indian production gave it an option that would not have existed at the same scale without that capacity. The value was optionality: the ability to accelerate an alternate source and buy time while policy changed.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Apple and its Indian suppliers really did move nearly $2 billion of iPhones to the United States in March 2025, including a roughly 600-ton airlift. The maneuver was a temporary inventory strategy aimed at reducing exposure to threatened tariffs—not proof of $2 billion in tariff savings, a permanent exemption or a complete shift away from China.
