Apple reduced official iPhone prices in India on July 26, 2024, after the Union Budget lowered the basic customs duty on imported mobile phones from 20% to 15%. The biggest reductions applied to the imported iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The move came while Apple’s shipments in China were weakening, but the available evidence does not show that China’s slowdown directly caused the Indian price cut.
This is a historical 2024 price change, not a current 2026 price list. The key question for buyers was how much they actually saved—and why the reduction varied so sharply between models.
Which iPhones became cheaper?
Apple’s reported 2024 list-price reductions ranged from ₹300 to ₹5,900. The following table shows the reported prices before and after the adjustment.

These were reported 2024 prices, not prices that should be treated as current in 2026. The largest reduction was ₹5,900 on the iPhone 15 Pro Max—not ₹6,000 across the entire iPhone range.

Why did Apple reduce the prices?
The direct trigger was India’s Union Budget, presented on July 23, 2024. The government reduced the basic customs duty on imported mobile phones, mobile chargers and printed circuit-board assemblies from 20% to 15%.
That five-percentage-point reduction lowered Apple’s import cost on affected products. Apple then passed some of the saving on to customers through lower official list prices. The government described the duty change as beneficial to consumers and consistent with efforts to improve the competitiveness of India’s electronics manufacturing sector.

The result also depends on the phone’s manufacturing and import status, component costs, currency movements, distribution expenses, taxes, margins and how much of the saving Apple chooses to pass through.
The duty change and Apple’s response were reported by Reuters via ThePrint and The Indian Express.
Why were the Pro models reduced by thousands of rupees?
The main explanation is the difference between imported and locally assembled models.

Apple was assembling several standard iPhone models in India, while the high-end iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max were still imported into the country. Imported models were therefore more directly exposed to the customs-duty reduction and had greater scope for a noticeable price adjustment.

Indian assembly does not mean that every component is locally produced or that a phone is free from all import-related costs, but it can reduce exposure to the duty applied to a finished imported handset.
This is why the headline “Apple cut iPhone prices in India” needs qualification. The move was not an equal discount across the range. It was primarily a larger pass-through on imported premium models.
What does the China slowdown have to do with it?
China was important context, not a confirmed direct cause.
Canalys reported that Apple’s smartphone shipments in China fell 6.7% year over year in the quarter ended June 2024. TechCrunch described the company as facing a difficult market environment in mainland China, where competition and weaker demand were pressuring its position.

However, Apple did not publicly confirm that it lowered Indian prices to compensate for weaker Chinese sales. The defensible reading is:

- Market context: Apple’s China shipments were declining at the same time.
- Reasonable inference: India’s growing strategic importance may have made it attractive for Apple to pass some of the duty saving to customers.
It would be inaccurate to state as fact that Apple cut prices in India “because China slowed.” The timing links the events, but it does not prove that one caused the other. The China shipment figure and market context were reported by TechCrunch.
Why India matters to Apple
India has become increasingly important to Apple as both a consumer market and a manufacturing base.
TechCrunch cited Morgan Stanley estimates that Apple’s India revenue reached $8.7 billion in 2023, up 42% from the previous year, while iPhone shipments reached 9.2 million units, up 39%. Those are analyst estimates reported by a secondary source, not country-level figures Apple publishes as audited financial results.

Apple was also expanding production through manufacturing partners including Foxconn and entities associated with Tata Group. Local assembly can support domestic sales and exports, while a more competitive price on imported premium models can help Apple broaden its reach among Indian buyers.
The strategic logic is straightforward:
- India offers a large and growing premium-smartphone market.
- Local manufacturing can strengthen Apple’s supply chain and export capacity.
- A lower duty burden improves the economics of imported high-end models.
- Lower official prices can make the iPhone more competitive, even if the reduction is modest.
This does not prove that Apple is abandoning China or moving all production to India. It shows that India was becoming a more important part of Apple’s regional strategy.
Was this a major discount?
For most models, no. For the Pro models, it was meaningful but still modest relative to the purchase price.

The iPhone 15 Pro became about 3.8% cheaper, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max about 3.7% cheaper. The iPhone SE received the largest percentage reduction at approximately 4.6%. The ₹300 reductions on the iPhone 13, 14 and 15 were below 0.5%.
The adjustment was notable because contemporaneous coverage described it as the first official list-price reduction for current-generation Pro models in India. But it should not be confused with a broad sale or a price collapse. Retailers could still offer separate bank-card discounts, exchange bonuses or clearance deals that were larger than Apple’s official reduction.
How did Indian prices compare with the United States?
At the time, the iPhone 15 Pro started at $999 in the United States, while the least expensive Indian configuration remained approximately equivalent to $1,550 after the reduction, according to TechCrunch.
That comparison requires care. U.S. Apple prices generally exclude state and local sales taxes, while Indian listed prices include applicable local taxes. Currency rates also change, and imported products face different distribution and cost structures in each market.
Even after accounting for those differences, the reported gap remained substantial. The Indian price cut reduced the gap but did not eliminate it.
What Indian buyers needed to consider
1. The exact model mattered
The largest official savings applied to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Buyers choosing a standard iPhone received only a small list-price adjustment.

2. The generation cycle mattered
The reduction arrived shortly before the expected September 2024 iPhone launch cycle. Buyers had to weigh a lower price on an outgoing generation against waiting for newer hardware. That timing is relevant to the original 2024 decision, but it should not be used as current 2026 buying advice without updated product and price information.
3. Official prices were not the same as street prices
Apple’s list price was only one part of the purchase decision. Authorized retailers could offer bank promotions, exchange incentives and inventory-clearance discounts. Buyers should compare the final payable amount, warranty terms and seller status rather than assuming that Apple’s official reduction was the best available deal.
4. Storage tiers required separate checking
The widely reported figures identified headline prices for the listed models. They should not automatically be applied to every storage capacity. Buyers comparing higher-capacity versions needed to check the price of the exact configuration.

An unusually low price from an unauthorized importer might involve a different regional model. Before buying, check warranty coverage, eSIM and network compatibility, included accessories, repair support and the seller’s return policy.
6. Business buyers had different calculations
A business should distinguish the consumer-facing listed price from its own tax, input-credit and accounting treatment. The effective cost can differ from the amount paid by an individual buyer.
What the 2024 price cut really meant
Apple’s Indian price reduction was a targeted pass-through of a customs-duty benefit, concentrated on imported premium iPhones. It was not a uniform ₹6,000 discount, and the China slowdown was background pressure rather than a confirmed explanation for the move.
For investors and industry watchers, the more significant signal was strategic: Apple was willing to reduce official Indian prices as India became more important to its sales and manufacturing plans. For buyers, the practical benefit depended heavily on the model. The Pro models saved thousands of rupees; most other iPhones saved only ₹300.
Because these figures belong to July 2024, anyone shopping now should use Apple’s current India store and authorized retailers for up-to-date prices rather than relying on this historical table. Apple’s official buying page is apple.com/in/shop/buy-iphone.
