Apple was genuinely reported to be considering an investment in OpenAI on August 29, 2024—but no completed equity investment was publicly confirmed. Apple was not named among the participants in OpenAI’s approximately $6.6 billion funding round announced on October 2, 2024. Later OpenAI financing announcements also identified other investors, not Apple.
The important distinction is between Apple’s confirmed product partnership with OpenAI and the unconfirmed report of an ownership stake.
What was reported in August 2024?
On August 29, 2024, reports summarized by Ars Technica said Apple was in talks to invest in an upcoming OpenAI funding round.

Thrive Capital was expected to lead it, while Microsoft and Nvidia were also reportedly considering investments. However, no confirmed amount for Apple was disclosed, and the reports described negotiations—not a signed agreement.

The $100 billion figure referred to OpenAI’s expected valuation, not the amount Apple supposedly planned to invest.
Did Apple actually invest?
There is no publicly confirmed evidence that Apple became an OpenAI investor.
OpenAI announced an approximately $6.6 billion financing round on October 2, 2024. The Associated Press reported that Apple was absent from the named participants.
OpenAI later announced or was reported to have secured much larger financings in 2026. A February round reportedly involved Amazon, SoftBank, and Nvidia, while OpenAI’s March 31 announcement said it had closed a round with $122 billion in committed capital at an $852 billion post-money valuation. Neither identified Apple as an investor:

A private or confidential transaction cannot be ruled out solely because it was not announced. But the accurate public record is: Apple was reportedly in talks, the proposed investment was not publicly confirmed, and Apple was not named in the major funding rounds covered here.
Why would Apple have considered an investment?
The strongest explanation is strategic, not simply financial. In 2024, Apple was developing its own Apple Intelligence models but also needed access to advanced generative-AI capabilities. ChatGPT offered a way to handle requests that Apple’s own systems could not answer as effectively.
An investment could potentially have:
- Deepened Apple’s access to OpenAI’s models and technical roadmap.
- Strengthened the commercial relationship behind ChatGPT integration.
- Helped Apple benefit from OpenAI’s growth without making OpenAI its only AI provider.
- Signaled that external frontier models were strategically important while Apple continued building its own technology.
Those are plausible strategic benefits, not terms that were publicly promised. The reports did not establish that Apple would receive special model access, board representation, ownership rights, or veto power.
The partnership Apple and OpenAI actually announced
On June 10, 2024, Apple and OpenAI announced a product partnership to bring ChatGPT into Apple experiences. Apple later described ChatGPT integration across:

- Writing Tools, for tasks such as generating or refining text.
- Visual intelligence and related Apple Intelligence experiences.
Apple said the integration was optional. Users could access ChatGPT without creating an account, while users who connected an OpenAI account would be subject to OpenAI’s data-use policies. Apple also said that IP addresses would be obscured and that OpenAI would not store requests from users who were not signed in, subject to the stated terms. Its October 2024 announcement provides the product and privacy details.
This arrangement demonstrates why a commercial partnership should not be confused with ownership. Apple could offer ChatGPT to users without buying part of OpenAI.
Apple’s AI strategy became more diversified
Apple’s later announcements point to a multi-provider strategy rather than exclusive dependence on OpenAI.
In January 2026, Apple and Google announced a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models would be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology. In June, Apple said that its next-generation Apple Intelligence features were powered by Apple Foundation Models developed in collaboration with Google.

Apple also described expanded Private Cloud Compute work involving Google and Nvidia for certain workloads. Relevant announcements include:
- Google’s statement on the Apple collaboration
- Apple’s June 2026 Apple Intelligence announcement
- Apple’s Private Cloud Compute expansion
- Apple’s technical discussion of its Foundation Models
This does not prove that Apple abandoned OpenAI. ChatGPT can remain one user-facing option while Apple operates its own model layer and uses Google technology for newer systems. The announced partnerships suggest—but do not conclusively prove—that Apple wants flexibility and wants to avoid dependence on one external AI company.
Where Microsoft fits
Microsoft was already a major OpenAI backer and technology partner when the Apple investment report appeared. Its relationship illustrates how capital, cloud infrastructure, and model access can reinforce one another.
An Apple investment would have placed another major platform company financially close to OpenAI while Apple and Microsoft competed in consumer and enterprise AI. Ownership comparisons require a date and entity label: OpenAI’s current structure page says Microsoft held roughly 27% of OpenAI Group after the recapitalization announced in October 2025.

What an Apple investment could have meant
For Apple
A stake could have created closer strategic alignment with OpenAI and potentially strengthened Apple’s access to an important AI supplier. It might also have reassured investors that Apple had a route to leading generative-AI capabilities while its internal models matured. Conversely, it could have raised questions about whether Apple was relying too heavily on an outside company.
For OpenAI
Apple’s enormous consumer distribution could have increased OpenAI’s reach. New capital could also have supported computing, research, data-center capacity, and hiring. But Apple’s involvement could have created tension around platform neutrality, user data, and OpenAI’s relationships with other technology companies.
For Google
Apple’s participation in OpenAI would have strengthened a direct rival to Google’s Gemini ecosystem. Instead, Google later obtained a strategically important role in Apple’s Foundation Models through the announced Gemini collaboration.

For regulators and competition
An investment by Apple, Microsoft, or Nvidia could have attracted scrutiny because each company holds significant influence in a different part of the technology stack: platforms, cloud infrastructure, chips, or AI distribution. That is a potential competition issue, not evidence that regulators opened a specific investigation into the proposed Apple investment.

What remains unknown?
The public record does not establish whether Apple later made a confidential investment outside the announced rounds. It also does not disclose whether Apple and OpenAI negotiated special commercial terms.
Future developments remain possible. OpenAI may admit additional investors in later financings, and Apple’s use of external AI providers may change. The reported 2026 lawsuit also complicates the relationship, but claims in a lawsuit should not be treated as proven facts unless established by a court.
