Apple AirTag (2nd generation)—often called AirTag 2—is a real, released product, not a rumor. Apple introduced it on January 26, 2026, with U.S. pricing starting at $29. The main improvements over the 2021 AirTag are better close-range finding, a louder speaker, and Precision Finding support on qualifying Apple Watch models. The basic design, replaceable battery, IP67 rating, and Find My network remain familiar.
For most shoppers, the $29 one-pack makes sense for a single item, while the $99 four-pack lowers the per-tracker cost to $24.75. Buy directly from Apple if engraving and straightforward support matter; use a major authorized retailer when verified pickup, rewards, or a genuine discount is more important.

Apple’s official name is AirTag (2nd generation). “AirTag 2” and “AirTag 2nd Gen” are common shorthand used in searches and retailer listings.
Availability and release date
Apple announced AirTag (2nd generation) on January 26, 2026. It was available to order through Apple’s website and Apple Store app that day, followed by Apple Store availability later that week and sales through Apple Authorized Resellers.

That means shoppers should treat it as an established product rather than an upcoming release. Because retailer inventory, delivery dates, and promotions change, confirm that a listing specifically identifies the second-generation 2026 model before paying.
AirTag 2 price: one-pack versus four-pack

The four-pack works out to $24.75 per AirTag. Buying four individually would cost $116, so the pack represents a $17 saving before tax. These are Apple’s announced U.S. launch prices, not guaranteed current prices at every retailer.
Remember to include the cost of an attachment. AirTag has no built-in keyring hole, and the $29 tracker does not include Apple’s $35 FineWoven Key Ring. A third-party holder may cost less, but check its fit, battery access, durability, and seller reputation.

What is new in AirTag (2nd generation)?
Precision Finding works from farther away
Apple says Precision Finding works from up to 50% farther away than on the previous generation. It combines visual, haptic, and audio guidance to direct you toward a nearby item.
That is an Apple claim about maximum improvement, not a guaranteed distance for every room or building. Walls, vehicles, obstructions, radio interference, the iPhone being used, and battery condition can all affect results.
Expanded Bluetooth range
The updated Bluetooth hardware expands the range at which the AirTag can be located. Apple has not supplied a universal feet-or-meters figure that should be treated as a guaranteed operating distance, so be wary of retailer listings that promise a fixed range.

A louder speaker and new chime
Apple describes the second-generation speaker as 50% louder and says the sound can be heard from up to twice as far away in its testing and product description. It also uses a new distinctive chime.
These are Apple’s stated comparisons, not independent acoustic measurements. The practical benefit is clearest when an AirTag is under furniture, inside a bag, or in a noisy environment.
Precision Finding from compatible Apple Watch models
AirTag 2 adds Precision Finding support on qualifying Apple Watch hardware. Apple identifies the following requirements:
- Apple Watch Series 9 or later
- Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later
- watchOS 26.2.1 or later, according to Apple’s announcement
Ordinary Find My access and Precision Finding are different. An older Apple Watch may provide some Find My functionality without offering the arrow-and-distance experience.
Share Item Location for participating airlines
Apple says it works directly with more than 50 airlines to support secure Share Item Location links for missing luggage. With a participating airline, you can share an AirTag’s location with authorized customer-service personnel.

This is not universal airline support. Sharing can be stopped by the owner, ends when the item is recovered, and automatically expires after seven days, according to Apple. Check whether your airline participates before relying on the feature during a trip.

Unwanted-tracking protections remain important
AirTag is designed to help locate objects, not people or pets. It includes unwanted-tracking protections and cross-platform alerts. It should never be used as a covert tracker or as a replacement for a dedicated GPS pet or personal-safety device.
What has not changed
AirTag 2 is an incremental usability upgrade rather than a complete redesign. It retains:
- The same basic puck-shaped external form factor
- A user-replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery
- IP67 water and dust resistance
- Bluetooth proximity finding
- NFC support for Lost Mode
- Find My network integration
- No subscription fee for basic tracking
Because Apple maintained the external form factor, existing AirTag accessories remain compatible. Third-party fit and quality can still vary.

See Apple’s current U.S. technical specifications before buying, particularly if your device runs an older operating system. Apple regional pages can display different version details; for example, its Ireland page lists different software-version wording. Check the support page for your country.
How AirTag 2 finds an item
- Nearby finding: Bluetooth connects the AirTag to a nearby Apple device. Compatible hardware can add Precision Finding with directional guidance.
- Find My network: Nearby Apple devices can anonymously relay the AirTag’s approximate location to its owner.
- Sound playback: You can ask the AirTag to play its speaker sound when it is close enough to locate.
- Lost Mode: Someone who finds the item can tap the AirTag with an NFC-capable phone to view contact information you choose to provide.
- Airline sharing: If an airline participates, its authorized staff can use a secure Share Item Location link to help with delayed luggage.
AirTag does not contain GPS or cellular service. It cannot independently report its position everywhere. Remote updates depend on nearby Apple devices participating in the Find My network, so updates may be infrequent in remote locations.

The most meaningful improvement is findability. AirTag 2 does not introduce a new tracking network, remove the need for nearby Apple devices, or lower Apple’s announced U.S. price.

Compatibility checklist
Before buying, confirm all of the following:
- You have an Apple Account.
- Your iPhone runs the required version of iOS. Apple’s U.S. specifications page lists iOS 26 or later.
- Your iPad runs the required version of iPadOS if you plan to use an iPad. Apple’s U.S. page lists iPadOS 26 or later.
- Find My is enabled for the relevant features.
- Your iPhone has the hardware required for Precision Finding if you want directional guidance.
- Your Apple Watch is a Series 9 or later or Ultra 2 or later, with the required watchOS version, if you want watch-based Precision Finding.
“Works with iPhone” does not mean every iPhone provides every feature. Basic tracking and Precision Finding have different hardware and software requirements.

Apple: best for engraving and direct support
Buy from Apple’s AirTag product page if you want free personalization, the clearest product identification, Apple’s return process, or direct support. Apple is also the simplest option when ordering a four-pack and a holder together.
Choose this route when authenticity and customization matter more than finding a temporary retailer promotion.
Best Buy and other authorized retailers: best for pickup or verified promotions
A major authorized retailer can be more convenient if you want local pickup, store credit, financing, or a verified sale price. Best Buy has a listing for the Apple AirTag 1-pack, 2nd generation.
Inventory, exact pack configuration, seller identity, and price can change. Confirm those details on the live product page rather than relying on a search-result snippet.

- Look for the exact wording AirTag (2nd generation) or a clearly identified 2026 model.
- Check the model description and packaging images.
- Confirm whether the listing is for one unit or four.
- Check whether a key ring, case, or luggage holder is included.
- Review the seller identity, return policy, delivery date, and warranty terms.
- Do not assume an unusually low price represents the new model.
Should you buy one or four?
Buy the one-pack if you are tracking one important item, testing the Find My ecosystem, or buying a gift. It is also the sensible choice if you are unsure whether you will use additional trackers.
Buy the four-pack if you already know you need trackers for keys, luggage, a backpack, wallet, camera bag, or multiple family members. At $24.75 per unit based on Apple’s announced pricing, it is the better value when you will use all four.
Do not buy four simply because the per-unit price is lower. An unused tracker is not a saving, especially if you also need to purchase separate holders.

Is AirTag 2 worth upgrading from the original?
Upgrade if you regularly search for items in large homes, vehicles, crowded spaces, or luggage; the original speaker is difficult to hear; or you own a compatible Apple Watch and want Precision Finding from your wrist.
Keep the original if it reliably finds your belongings, its battery and speaker still work, and your typical use does not benefit from additional range or volume. The first-generation AirTag is not obsolete.
For many current owners, the financially sensible approach is to buy AirTag 2 only when an existing tracker needs replacement or when the improved findability solves a recurring problem. The same basic design and unchanged announced U.S. pricing make this a convenience upgrade, not a must-have replacement for every working unit.
Important limitations and safety points
- Not a GPS or cellular tracker: AirTag relies on Bluetooth and nearby Apple devices on the Find My network.
- Not for people or pets: Apple designs it for objects and includes unwanted-tracking protections.
- Airline support is conditional: Share Item Location works with participating airlines and authorized processes, not every carrier.
- Range varies: Apple’s 50% and two-times claims are not guaranteed distances in every environment.
- IP67 is not permanent waterproofing: It is tested to a maximum depth of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes under controlled laboratory conditions. Resistance can decline with wear or damage.
- Coin-cell battery safety: CR2032 batteries can be dangerous if swallowed, particularly by children. Store and dispose of them safely.
- Holder sold separately: Budget for a key ring, luggage tag, collar mount, or other attachment if the item has no suitable pocket.
Bottom line
AirTag (2nd generation) is a legitimate 2026 release with the same announced U.S. prices as the original: $29 for one or $99 for four. Its value comes primarily from better close-range finding, a louder speaker, and compatible Apple Watch support. New buyers should choose the one-pack for a single item and the four-pack when all four trackers will be used. Existing owners should upgrade when range, sound, or watch-based Precision Finding addresses a real problem—not simply because the new model has arrived.
