Apple did not move all AirPods production from China to India by 2025. Foxconn began assembling AirPods at a facility near Hyderabad, Telangana, making India an additional production base. Reports place trial production and early shipments in 2024, with further ramp-up during 2025, but Apple has not disclosed India’s share of global AirPods output or confirmed that the country makes every model.
For consumers, the distinction matters: an India assembly line does not guarantee a lower price, a particular country of origin for the AirPods in a given box, or independence from Chinese suppliers. The shift is best understood as supply-chain diversification—not a clean break with China.
What changed—and what did not
Foxconn, an Apple contract manufacturer, is reported to assemble AirPods at a facility near Hyderabad in the Indian state of Telangana. Apple designs AirPods; Foxconn manufactures them under contract. The factory is not an Apple-owned plant.

The move adds final assembly capacity in India. It does not show that the entire AirPods supply chain moved there. Apple suppliers had already been reported to make some AirPods-related components, including enclosures, in India before Foxconn’s assembly plans emerged. Components, final assembly and product design are different parts of the manufacturing chain.

Apple’s public materials describe a supplier network spread across many countries, while its 2025 supply-chain report identifies AirPods Pro assembly in Vietnam and component manufacturing in mainland China. Those disclosures are consistent with a multi-country network, not an India-only operation. Apple has not published a country-by-country breakdown of AirPods production or the proportion made in India. Apple’s supply-chain overview and its 2025 Supply Chain Progress Report provide context, but do not establish India’s share of output.
Why reports give different start dates
There is no single uncontested public date for when Hyderabad production “began.” Reports have described several different milestones: trials, initial exports, commercial shipments and a larger production ramp. Those terms should not be treated as interchangeable. Apple has not provided a public, definitive production timeline.
- Before the assembly shift: Apple suppliers were reported to be making some AirPods-related components in India. MacRumors reported on the earlier component activity.
- April 2024: Moneycontrol and other reporting placed trial production or initial exports around this time. These accounts rely on sources rather than an Apple production announcement.
- August 2024: Moneycontrol later reported that commercial shipments had begun. That report and the earlier accounts should be read as reported milestones, not Apple-confirmed dates. See Moneycontrol’s report on Foxconn’s Hyderabad operation.
- December 13, 2024: Bloomberg reported that Foxconn was preparing to begin commercial assembly around the first quarter of 2025, following trial production. This later timetable differs from reports of earlier shipments. Bloomberg’s report is a useful reference for the planned ramp.
- 2025: Additional reporting described production and exports expanding during the year. Moneycontrol reported shipments to markets including the United States, Europe and Latin America, but Apple has not published a detailed destination or volume breakdown. Moneycontrol’s export report and the Economic Times account of planned exports describe the reported activity.
- July 2025: News reports said restrictions on rare-earth exports affected or slowed output at the Telangana facility. The reported disruption, including references to dysprosium, was based on unnamed sources; its duration and production impact were not publicly quantified.
- Later in 2025: India Today reported that Foxconn was expanding Hyderabad AirPods capacity and hiring, another sign of a ramp rather than proof of a particular global production share.
The most careful summary is that India-based AirPods production was being trialed by 2024 and was reported to enter commercial export production around 2024–2025, with a ramp during 2025. Different start dates may refer to different stages, but public reporting does not conclusively reconcile them.

Which AirPods models are made in India?
Apple has not published a reliable, model-by-model list of AirPods assembled in India. Some reporting has said the Hyderabad facility handled two models without consistently identifying them. It is not safe to conclude that every AirPods, AirPods Pro or AirPods Max model—or every unit of any one model—is made there.
Production may vary by model, batch and destination market. A product sold in India, the United States or the United Kingdom is not necessarily made in India simply because the factory exports AirPods. If country of origin matters to you, check the packaging or product labeling for the specific unit rather than inferring origin from the sales market.
Why Apple is adding production in India
Apple’s expansion fits a broader “China plus one” approach: retaining established manufacturing in China while building capacity elsewhere. The goal is resilience and flexibility, not necessarily an immediate exit from any one country.

- Concentration risk: Relying heavily on one manufacturing location leaves a company more exposed to local lockdowns, factory interruptions, logistics problems or other disruptions. COVID-era factory shutdowns made that exposure especially visible.
- Geopolitical and trade uncertainty: US–China tensions and changing tariff or customs rules can affect costs and shipping plans. Tariffs may be part of the calculation, but the diversification effort predates any one policy change and should not be reduced to a single tariff motive.
- India’s manufacturing push: Government incentives and Make in India policies aim to attract electronics production. Apple’s growing manufacturing and export presence also gives suppliers reasons to build out local operations.
- More options for production and exports: Additional capacity can give Apple and its suppliers more flexibility about where to assemble products and how to serve some markets.
Apple says its supplier network spans more than 60 countries. That broad footprint is not evidence that any specific product is made everywhere, but it illustrates why a company may distribute production across locations rather than rely on a single national base. See Apple’s supply-chain overview.
India, China and Vietnam play different roles

The rare-earth reports offer a concrete example of why assembly location is not the same as supply-chain independence. In July 2025, Moneycontrol and the Economic Times reported that China’s export restrictions on rare-earth materials, including dysprosium, disrupted or slowed production at the Telangana facility. Because the reports relied on unnamed sources and did not quantify the impact, they do not establish how much output was affected. They do illustrate the underlying point: a product assembled in India can still depend on materials, components, processing or equipment sourced elsewhere.

Do not expect an automatic price cut
There is no evidence that Indian assembly by itself will lower AirPods retail prices. The price a buyer pays reflects more than factory wages or assembly location: components, logistics, duties and taxes, currency movements, retail margins, promotions and Apple’s pricing decisions all matter. Even if a change reduces one cost or tariff exposure, Apple could retain the savings rather than reduce the listed price.

Apple India’s AirPods page listed prices of ₹12,900 for AirPods 4, ₹17,900 for AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, ₹25,900 for AirPods Pro 3 and ₹67,900 for AirPods Max 2 in the research snapshot from August 2026. Assembly country alone does not predict quality
Country of assembly is not, by itself, a quality rating. Quality depends on design and engineering requirements, qualified suppliers, component consistency, process control and testing. The available evidence does not show that Indian-made AirPods are better or worse than units assembled elsewhere. Nor does it provide independent testing that would justify a claim of identical performance by origin.

Assembly location does not change the model’s published feature set. For example, Apple’s India page lists AirPods 4 specifications such as H2 processing, Bluetooth 5.3, USB-C charging, IP54 resistance and up to five hours of listening time per charge; that describes the product, not where a particular unit was assembled. Check the exact model’s specifications and Apple’s applicable regional support terms when buying. Apple provides India repair information at Apple Support.

What the move means for India
AirPods assembly can contribute to India’s electronics exports, factory employment, supplier development and manufacturing know-how. It also signals that Apple’s suppliers see India as a viable location for more than one product category. The strategic significance can be real even if the initial output is modest: an additional qualified production base gives Apple another option when capacity, trade conditions or disruptions make that useful.
There are limits. India still relies on imported components and materials, supplier depth is not as mature as China’s, and production ramps can face sourcing or process bottlenecks. Contract manufacturing and export growth also do not mean that product design, intellectual property or supplier ownership has shifted to India. Apple has not disclosed a global AirPods production share for India, so claims that India makes most AirPods—or that it has a complete, self-sufficient AirPods ecosystem—go beyond the public evidence.
The practical takeaway
By 2025, India had emerged as an additional AirPods assembly and export base through Foxconn’s Hyderabad operation, according to multiple reports. The exact production milestones remain less clear than a simple “started in 2025” headline suggests, because sources describe trial runs, shipments and ramp-up at different times. China remains relevant to components and upstream materials, and Vietnam remains part of the assembly footprint. For buyers, the shift is a supply-chain story—not a reliable reason to expect cheaper AirPods, a particular country of origin or a change in quality.
