Anthropic hired Mike Krieger as its first chief product officer on May 15, 2024. Krieger, who co-founded Instagram and later served as its chief technology officer, was brought in to oversee product engineering, product management, and product design as Anthropic expanded Claude beyond its research origins.
That headline is now outdated as a description of his current job. On January 13, 2026, Anthropic said Krieger had moved from the CPO role to its internal Labs group, where he would build experimental products with Ben Mann. Ami Vora now leads Anthropic’s Product organization.
What happened to Mike Krieger at Anthropic?
Anthropic announced Krieger’s appointment as chief product officer on May 15, 2024. He was the company’s first CPO and was given responsibility for:

- Expanding Claude’s enterprise applications
- Making Claude accessible to a broader audience
Anthropic later changed his remit. In its January 13, 2026 announcement, the company said Krieger had joined Anthropic Labs after approximately two years as CPO. He would build experimental products alongside Ben Mann, while Ami Vora took over leadership of the Product organization.

Who is Mike Krieger?
Mike Krieger is a Brazilian-American engineer and technology executive best known as a co-founder of Instagram. Kevin Systrom was Instagram’s other widely recognized co-founder.
Krieger also served as Instagram’s CTO. Anthropic’s 2024 announcement said that, during his tenure, Instagram’s engineering organization grew to more than 450 people and the service grew to more than one billion users. Those figures describe the scale of the organization and product during his tenure; they should not be interpreted as growth caused by one executive alone.
After leaving Instagram, Krieger co-founded Artifact, a personalized news application. Artifact operated for about three years before Yahoo acquired it. Krieger then joined Anthropic.
It is important to distinguish these titles: Krieger was Instagram’s co-founder and CTO, not its CEO. He also did not move directly from Instagram to Anthropic; Artifact and its acquisition by Yahoo came between those roles.
Why did Anthropic hire him?
Anthropic’s stated reason was Krieger’s experience building intuitive, large-scale consumer products and user experiences. CEO Dario Amodei connected that experience to creating new ways for people to interact with Claude, particularly in workplace settings.
The strategic significance was broader than a résumé headline. Anthropic was building frontier AI models, but model capability alone does not determine whether people or businesses adopt a product. Claude also needed clear interfaces, useful workflows, reliable integrations, enterprise features, and a product organization capable of turning research advances into everyday tools.
Krieger’s background offered experience with several parts of that challenge:
- Large-scale engineering: He had helped lead engineering at a service used by more than one billion people, according to Anthropic.
- Consumer usability: Instagram’s growth depended not only on infrastructure but also on making a technically complex service easy to use.
- Information products: Artifact gave Krieger experience building a personalized news application and exploring how people consume information with software assistance.
- Organizational leadership: His role involved building and managing the teams needed to develop and operate a major product.
These points support the interpretation that Anthropic wanted stronger product discipline as it expanded beyond model research. They do not prove that Anthropic planned to turn Claude into a social network or replicate Instagram’s business model.
What did the CPO role mean at Anthropic?
At the time of Krieger’s appointment, the CPO role covered the full product-development lifecycle. It was not merely a marketing or communications position.
- Research and engineering capabilities would need to become usable product features.
- Product managers would identify user needs and set priorities.
- Designers would shape how people interacted with Claude.
- Engineers would build, secure, and scale the resulting experiences.
- Enterprise and consumer products would be refined through customer feedback and adoption.
Anthropic said Krieger would oversee the relevant functions. That does not mean he personally created every Claude feature, nor does the announcement assign him authorship of particular product launches.
Why product leadership mattered for Claude
An AI lab can demonstrate a powerful model without yet having a product that fits naturally into a person’s work. The gap between those two outcomes includes interface design, onboarding, pricing, account management, privacy controls, integrations, reliability, and support.

Businesses may need administrative controls, identity management, security reviews, collaboration features, predictable billing, and workflows that connect Claude to existing software. Anthropic’s 2024 announcement specifically emphasized enterprise applications and bringing Claude to a wider audience.
That context explains why hiring a prominent consumer-product executive was strategically meaningful. Frontier AI companies compete on model quality, but they also compete on distribution, usability, integrations, and the ability to turn emerging capabilities into dependable products.

Anthropic’s Labs announcement described a new arrangement. Labs would incubate experimental products at the frontier of Claude’s capabilities, while the Product organization would focus on scaling reliable experiences for customers and users.
Krieger moved into Labs to build experimental products with Ben Mann. Ami Vora became the leader of the Product organization, working with CTO Rahul Patil.
This was an internal change, not an announcement that Krieger had left Anthropic. It also did not establish Labs as a separate company. Anthropic described Labs as a group within the company.
The change suggests a shift in emphasis:
- As CPO: Krieger’s remit centered on building and expanding Anthropic’s main product organization.
- In Labs: His focus shifted toward experimenting with new products built around emerging Claude capabilities.
That distinction matters because experimental work and scaled product delivery require different operating priorities. Labs can explore new interfaces and workflows, while the main Product organization can turn validated ideas into stable experiences for customers.
What does this mean for Claude?
The personnel change indicates that Anthropic continues to treat product development as a central part of its AI strategy. Krieger’s Labs role could support faster experimentation with new ways to use Claude, particularly where the technology does not yet fit an established product category.
However, the announcement does not justify predicting a specific Claude feature, launch, or business model. It does not show that Krieger created a particular consumer product, that Claude will resemble Instagram, or that any one future product is guaranteed.
The most defensible conclusion is narrower: Anthropic first hired Krieger to strengthen product execution as Claude reached more users and businesses, then moved him into a dedicated experimental-products role as the company reorganized its product work.
The accurate headline in 2026
“Anthropic’s new CPO is Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger” accurately described the May 2024 hiring announcement. It is not accurate as a current-status headline in August 2026.
A current version would be:
Anthropic hired Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger as its first CPO in 2024, then moved him to lead experimental products in Anthropic Labs in January 2026.
