Anthropic made Claude’s memory feature available to free users on March 2, 2026, alongside a tool that helps users transfer summarized preferences and context from services such as ChatGPT and Gemini. The feature appears designed to reduce one of the biggest costs of switching AI assistants: rebuilding your profile, writing preferences, projects, and recurring instructions.
The important limitation is that this is not a complete ChatGPT account migration. Claude’s workflow generates a condensed text summary that you review and paste into Claude. It does not automatically transfer every conversation, attachment, timestamp, project, or custom integration.
What Anthropic launched
Anthropic introduced two related capabilities:
- Memory for free Claude users: Claude can retain relevant context and preferences across conversations. Memory is optional and can be turned off.
- Memory import and export: Users can ask another AI provider to summarize stored memories and useful context, then add that summary to Claude. Claude also provides an export path for users who later want to back up or move their memory.
Anthropic announced free memory on March 2, 2026, according to its release notes. Its migration page explicitly presents the feature as a way to switch providers without starting over. Describing the move as an effort to “lure ChatGPT users” is a competitive interpretation, rather than a quoted formal admission from Anthropic.
As of August 18, 2026, Anthropic’s help documentation says memory import and export are supported on Free, Pro, Max, and Team plans through the web experience and Claude Desktop. Team and Enterprise accounts may see a different rollout because administrators can control organizational features.

How to import ChatGPT or Gemini context into Claude
The process is a copy-and-paste transfer of an AI-generated profile:
- Open Anthropic’s memory migration page, or open Claude’s memory settings.
- Copy Anthropic’s prepared prompt.
- Paste the prompt into ChatGPT, Gemini, or another supported AI service.
- Ask that service to produce a summary of stored memories and relevant context learned from previous conversations.
- Review the response carefully and remove information you do not want to transfer.
- Copy the edited summary.
- In Claude, open memory settings and paste the text into the import field.
- Select Add to memory or the equivalent confirmation control.
- Ask Claude what it now remembers, then correct or delete inaccurate entries.
Claude’s interface is still being migrated. On the newer interface, look under Settings > Memory. Some accounts may still show the legacy path, Settings > Capabilities > Memory. Anthropic documents both paths in its import and export guide.
What transfers—and what does not
The imported result depends on what the original provider can identify and how it summarizes your history. It is better understood as AI-generated context extraction than as a guaranteed export of everything another service knows about you.

This distinction matters financially and operationally. A freelancer may transfer a preferred invoice-writing style and business background, but still needs to recreate project files, integrations, client-specific instructions, and document workflows. A student may transfer study preferences without transferring the source notes or complete history behind them.
Anthropic also cautions that some personal details—particularly information unrelated to work—may not be retained. The final memory profile can therefore be incomplete even when the source provider has extensive history.
Memory is not the same as chat search
Claude’s memory and chat search solve different problems. According to Anthropic’s documentation:
- Memory maintains cross-conversation context and preferences that can influence future chats.
- Chat search retrieves relevant information from earlier conversations, with retrieval-augmented generation appearing as a tool call.
Memory should not be treated as a perfect copy of the original conversation. Turning it on does not mean Claude automatically recalls every prior message, file, date, or decision. For exact historical details, you may still need to search the old conversation or provide the relevant material again.
Is Claude memory really free?
Yes, memory is listed as a feature of Claude Free. Anthropic’s pricing page lists the Free plan at $0 and includes memory across conversations, web and mobile access, desktop access, web search, file creation, and code execution, subject to plan restrictions and usage limits.
Free does not mean unlimited. Anthropic says usage limits vary according to activity, model, conversation length, and feature use, with rolling five-hour session windows. The company does not promise a fixed number of free messages.
Paid plans remain differentiated by capacity and tools:
- Claude Pro: $20 per month in the United States or $200 per year. The annual payment averages about $16.67 per month before tax, although the pricing page may display it as roughly $17 per month when billed annually. Pro includes higher usage and additional capabilities such as Claude Code, subject to the plan’s terms.
- Claude Max: $100 per month for Max 5x or $200 per month for Max 20x, with substantially higher session capacity and priority access.
- Team and Enterprise: Designed for organizations that need administration, access controls, retention options, and other business features.
Because memory itself is available on Free, subscribing solely to obtain memory is unnecessary. The practical reason to upgrade is usually higher usage, premium capabilities, or developer and professional workflows. See Anthropic’s plan guide and Pro details for current plan terms.

A generated memory summary may contain more sensitive information than you expect. It could include work details, health information, financial circumstances, relationship information, precise locations, or details about other people.
Before pasting the summary into Claude:
- Read the entire generated response.
- Remove passwords, account numbers, precise addresses, medical identifiers, confidential client information, and private details about third parties.
- Delete outdated preferences and facts that are no longer accurate.
- Avoid pasting an unreviewed conversation archive into a memory field.
- Keep a private copy of the cleaned summary so you can audit what was transferred.
Importing is a separate copy operation. There is no evidence in Anthropic’s documentation that it deletes or changes memories held by ChatGPT or another source provider. Do not assume the services synchronize. Keep the original account until you have checked Claude’s version for omissions and errors.
Also review the providers’ privacy controls. Anthropic says consumer chat and coding-session data may be used to improve models if a user opts in, if a conversation is flagged for safety review, or under certain explicitly opted-in programs. That means “free” should not be interpreted as “private by default.” Read Anthropic’s current explanations of model-training data use and personal-data handling. For especially sensitive material, consider using an incognito chat rather than adding the information to persistent memory.
How to verify that the migration worked
After importing, use a small, controlled check rather than assuming the transfer succeeded:
- Ask Claude to summarize what it remembers about you.
- Test a known writing or response-style preference with a short prompt.
- Run one recurring work, study, or personal task.
- Check names, dates, project statuses, and preferences against your records.
- Start a new chat and confirm that the relevant context carries over.
- Edit or delete incorrect memory entries.
- Compare Claude’s behavior before and after memory was enabled.
This process can expose common problems: the original provider may produce an incomplete summary, the summary may contain stale information, or Claude may simplify an instruction rather than preserve its exact wording. A large response may also be truncated or rejected by the import field.

Casual free users
Claude Free is a low-cost way to test the assistant without rebuilding every preference manually. Import a redacted profile, try several real tasks, and upgrade only if the usage limits become inconvenient.
Heavy ChatGPT or Gemini users
The tool reduces switching friction, but it does not replace the old service immediately. Expect to recreate files, projects, integrations, custom instructions, and specialized workflows yourself.
Professionals handling confidential information
Review and redact the generated profile before transferring it. If your employer, clients, or regulators impose retention and access requirements, an individual free account may not be appropriate.

Developers
Memory can preserve preferences and recurring context, but it is not a substitute for code repositories, project configuration, credentials management, or documented technical requirements. Claude Code is a paid-plan capability rather than a Free-plan reason to switch.

Organizations should evaluate administrator controls, retention, identity management, audit needs, and data policies before asking employees to import company context into individual accounts.
Should you switch to Claude because of free memory?
Free memory is a meaningful reduction in the cost of trying Claude. Users who have accumulated stable writing preferences, professional context, or recurring instructions no longer need to start with a blank profile. The export option also makes the feature more portable than a system with no documented way to take memory back out.
It is not, by itself, evidence that Claude is better than ChatGPT or Gemini. Nor does it make the services interchangeable. The import depends on an AI-generated summary, may omit personal details, can preserve errors, and does not transfer the underlying archive or workflow ecosystem.
