On March 2, 2017, New York-based Amper Music announced a $4 million seed round led by Two Sigma Ventures. The company aimed to use artificial intelligence to help media makers create customizable background music quickly. This is the 2017 financing—not Amper’s separate $4 million seed round announced in 2018.
What Amper Music was building
Amper targeted a routine but costly production problem: video makers, publishers, advertisers, game developers and other content teams often need music that fits a particular mood, duration and scene. Finding a suitable licensed track or commissioning a composer can take time and involve rights-clearance work. Amper’s pitch was to make tailored production music faster to create, especially for teams producing content at scale.
In the product workflow described in 2017, a user selected a mood, genre or style, and track length, then adjusted musical elements such as instrumentation, bass and tempo. After clicking Render, the user received a composition. Amper said generation could take seconds; that was a historical company claim, not an independently tested performance measure or a promise about any current service.
The idea was not simply to pick a finished track from a stock-music catalogue. Amper presented its system as generating music in response to a user’s choices, while positioning the tool as useful to both musicians and people without formal music training. That made it most directly relevant to functional or production music—background tracks for media workflows—rather than a wholesale replacement for composers creating highly individualized artistic work.

How Amper described its AI
Amper emphasized music theory, human-created sample libraries and user-directed customization. CEO Drew Silverstein told VentureBeat that the company was not relying solely on neural networks and described its approach as teaching a system how to be creative. The company did not disclose enough technical detail to establish its model architecture, training data or the precise division between algorithmic generation and curated musical material.
That distinction matters when interpreting the phrase “AI composer.” The public descriptions support a picture of software generating and arranging music within designed musical constraints and a sample-based workflow; they do not establish that Amper used a particular generative architecture or that its output was equivalent to a human composer’s work. In a 2019 announcement, Amper claimed its library contained more than one million individual samples and thousands of instruments. Those figures were the company’s own claims, not an independent audit.

The $4 million round: investors and intended use
The 2017 financing was a seed round led by Two Sigma Ventures. Foundry Group, Kiwi Venture Partners, Advancit Capital and Brooklyn Bridge Ventures also participated. VentureBeat reported that the round brought Amper’s total funding at the time to $5.1 million.

The proceeds were intended to support research and development, marketing and hiring. VentureBeat reported that Amper had 10 employees in New York City and Los Angeles. The company’s founders were Drew Silverstein, Sam Estes and Michael Hobe, whom Amper described as film composers and music professionals. Contemporary coverage gives 2015 as the founding year, while Amper’s later company material says 2014, so the available sources do not support a single uncontested date.

Customers, licensing and the API
Amper and contemporary coverage named the Associated Press, Hearst Television and Mental Floss as users or examples of organizations working with the product. The company’s 2017 release specifically said AP and Hearst Television were using Amper for content production. These announcements show named use cases, not the scale of adoption, revenue or customer retention.
Amper also announced an open API in 2017, suggesting a route for developers to incorporate music generation into other products. VentureBeat mentioned YouTube, Snapchat and iMovie as possible beneficiaries, not confirmed integrations. An API announcement is not evidence that those platforms adopted it.

Amper’s 2017 announcement described generated music as carrying a global, royalty-free, perpetual license. That is a historical statement of the company’s offered terms; it should not be read as a general rule for AI-generated music, proof that users owned copyright in every output, or resolution of questions about samples, performers, derivative works or platform policies. Businesses evaluating any music license need to check the actual contract and the uses it covers.

Why the two $4 million headlines matter
Amper announced another $4 million seed round on March 22, 2018, led by Horizons Ventures. The company said that round brought total investment to $9 million and would support international expansion and additional resources, including doubling its U.S. employee base. The 2018 round was separate from the Two Sigma Ventures-led financing announced a year earlier.

Amper Score’s 2019 launch reflected the company’s effort to serve enterprise content creators, rather than only individual users. As with the earlier product claims, the launch announcement describes what Amper said it was offering; it does not establish current availability.
What happened to Amper?
On November 11, 2020, Shutterstock announced the acquisition of certain Amper Music assets and said Amper employees would join the company. Shutterstock did not disclose a purchase price. The wording is important: the announcement does not establish that Shutterstock bought the company in its entirety on disclosed terms, nor does it support a valuation estimate.
Accordingly, Amper is best understood as a historical startup and product, not assumed to be an independent current vendor. The available announcements do not verify that a standalone Amper service, signup process or pricing plan remains available today.
Why the funding story mattered
Amper’s 2017 round backed an early attempt to turn AI music composition into a creator workflow: specify a few musical attributes, generate a track and adapt it for a production. That model addressed the practical economics of high-volume media, where speed and predictable licensing can matter as much as musical distinction. Its limitations were equally important: quick generation does not guarantee a track will hit a scene’s narrative beats, and broad licensing language does not eliminate every rights question. Amper’s story is therefore both a funding milestone and a snapshot of how early AI-music companies framed automation as a tool for production teams.
