On January 2, 2025, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D had sold more than 8,560 units at German retailer Mindfactory—about 67% more than the roughly 5,105 combined sales recorded for the four other Ryzen 9000 desktop processors included in the comparison. That is a striking retailer-level demand signal, but it is not worldwide market-share data or an official AMD sales report.
What Mindfactory’s numbers showed
Mindfactory has historically displayed cumulative sales counters on individual product listings. The January 2, 2025 snapshot reported by HotHardware compared the Ryzen 7 9800X3D with four non-X3D Ryzen 9000 desktop models:
| # | Preview | Product | Price | |

| Processor | Approximate units sold |
|---|---|
| Ryzen 7 9800X3D | More than 8,560 |
| Ryzen 9 9950X | More than 790 |
| Ryzen 9 9900X | More than 820 |
| Ryzen 7 9700X | More than 2,570 |
| Ryzen 5 9600X | More than 925 |
| Four non-X3D models combined | Slightly more than 5,105 |
Using those displayed figures, the 9800X3D had sold approximately 1.68 times as many units as the other four processors combined. The difference was about 3,455 units, or roughly 67.7% more than the comparison group. Because the counters were displayed as rounded “over” values, these should be treated as approximate figures rather than precise audited totals.

The phrase “the entire Ryzen 9000 range” needs narrowing. The comparison covered the four other non-X3D Ryzen 9000 desktop models represented in the reporting at that time: the 9950X, 9900X, 9700X and 9600X. It did not mean every Ryzen 9000-branded processor sold worldwide, nor did it include later Ryzen 9000X3D products that were not yet part of the market comparison.

Mindfactory’s counters are best understood as a retailer-level demand signal. They are not:
- AMD shipment or revenue data;
- European-wide or global sell-through figures;
- an audited market-share calculation;
- a controlled survey of buyer preferences; or
- a direct measure of processor profitability.
Mindfactory’s enthusiast-oriented customer base may also overrepresent DIY PC builders and gamers—the exact buyers most likely to prioritize an X3D gaming processor.
Why the 9800X3D was so attractive
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 5 desktop processor using AMD’s second-generation 3D V-Cache technology. Its design targets gaming, where a larger cache can improve performance in some cache-sensitive titles, particularly when the processor rather than the graphics card is limiting frame rates.

Eight cores are also enough for most gaming systems. A gaming buyer may therefore prefer the 9800X3D’s specialized performance profile over paying for the 12 or 16 cores of a Ryzen 9 processor that are more valuable in heavily threaded work. AMD’s own sales material emphasizes gaming and 3D V-Cache, but those claims are manufacturer testing and should not be treated as universal results across every game or configuration. See AMD’s product positioning guide.
Timing likely mattered too. The 9800X3D launched on November 7, 2024, after the initial Ryzen 9000 models. It was newer, highly visible and focused on the enthusiast gaming market. Reports also described constrained availability, which can concentrate sales when stock appears and encourage buyers to purchase immediately.
Why this is not a simple verdict against non-X3D Ryzen CPUs
The processors were designed for different buyers. The Ryzen 9 9950X and 9900X offer more cores for rendering, compiling, encoding, simulation and other multithreaded workloads. The Ryzen 7 9700X may be the better value if gaming performance is already sufficient or if the 9800X3D premium would reduce the budget available for a graphics card. The Ryzen 5 9600X is aimed at more cost-conscious systems.

Sales also depend on price, promotions, bundles, stock and listing structure. Boxed and tray or OEM versions may be combined in some reporting, and different products may not have identical listings. Most importantly, observed sales reflect completed purchases under particular market conditions—not pure underlying demand. A product that is unavailable cannot record sales, while a fresh shipment of a popular product can create a sharp burst of transactions.
Amazon rankings provided supporting—but limited—context
The original coverage also cited Amazon bestseller positions: No. 2 for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, No. 9 for the 9700X, No. 13 for the 9900X, No. 14 for the 9950X and No. 25 for the 9600X. Those rankings were directionally consistent with strong 9800X3D interest, but Amazon’s ordinal rankings do not disclose unit volume and cannot be added to Mindfactory’s counters. The rankings were reported by HotHardware.
What later snapshots add
Separate reports recorded the 9800X3D at approximately 8,700 units around January 1, 2025, and later coverage cited more than 9,190 units. Those snapshots show that the counter continued to move, but they should not be mixed with the January 2 comparison as though they were one simultaneous measurement. See the reporting from ComputerBase and Overclock3D.

Later retailer coverage in 2026 is a different data point, not a revision of the original January 2025 result. It may suggest continuing interest, but it still does not establish worldwide sales leadership.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What the result means for a buyer
Choose the 9800X3D when:
- Gaming is the primary workload.
- You are using a powerful graphics card and targeting high refresh rates or CPU-limited performance.
- You are building on AM5 and value strong gaming performance over maximum core count.
- The price premium is reasonable after budgeting for the GPU, motherboard, memory and cooler.
Consider another processor when:
- Ryzen 9 9950X: You regularly render, compile, encode, simulate or run other heavily threaded workloads.
- Ryzen 9 9900X: You need more than eight cores but do not require the top 16-core configuration.
- Ryzen 7 9700X: You want a capable eight-core CPU and the 9800X3D premium is large.
- Ryzen 5 9600X: You are building to a tighter budget and would gain more from putting the money into the graphics card.
- Previous-generation X3D: A discounted older X3D model may be sensible when its performance is sufficient for your resolution, games and refresh rate.
At GPU-limited resolutions and quality settings, differences between processors can shrink. A faster CPU cannot compensate for an undersized GPU, and an upgrade may be poor value if it requires replacing a working motherboard while forcing compromises elsewhere.

Platform costs buyers should not overlook
The 9800X3D uses AMD’s AM5 platform, which requires a compatible motherboard and DDR5 memory. Check the motherboard’s BIOS support for the processor, memory compatibility and whether a firmware update can be installed without an older CPU. The processor is sold without a stock cooler in the cited retail listing, so cooling and AM5 mounting support must be included in the build budget.
There is no responsible current price to quote from the January 2025 sales story. Contemporary coverage cited a U.S. launch MSRP of $479, but that is a historical launch figure, not a current August 2026 price. Check the live retailer price, stock status and competing CPU prices before deciding.
The practical takeaway
The Mindfactory snapshot shows exceptional demand for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D among that retailer’s customers: more than 8,560 units versus slightly more than 5,105 for the four listed non-X3D Ryzen 9000 models combined. It is strong evidence that gaming-focused X3D processors resonated with enthusiasts, but it does not prove that the 9800X3D was the best choice for every workload or that AMD dominated global CPU sales.
