Newegg opened sales of AMD’s Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Ryzen 9 9900X3D on March 12, 2025, at 6:00 a.m. Pacific Time. Their launch MSRPs were $699 and $599, respectively. That date is the historical launch—not confirmation that either processor is in stock or selling for that price now.
What happened at Newegg
Newegg announced that both processors would be available for purchase at the same time: March 12, 2025, at 6:00 a.m. PT. Its announcement described a sales launch, not merely the addition of product pages or a preorder window. The announcement establishes the stated availability time, but not the current inventory, seller, shipping date, or price on Newegg.

The launch prices are the processors’ MSRPs, not a guarantee of Newegg’s current checkout total. AMD’s U.S. product pages surfaced at those same prices, but that does not establish Newegg’s live price or availability. Retail prices can change, and marketplace offers may differ from Newegg-sold inventory. Check the seller, stock indicator, delivery estimate, and final checkout price before treating a listing as a deal.

AMD lists a maximum operating temperature of 95°C for each chip and recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance. That is a recommendation, not a statement that liquid cooling is mandatory in every system. Product specifications and prices are listed on AMD’s 9950X3D and 9900X3D pages.
What X3D means for a buyer
Both processors combine Zen 5 cores with AMD’s second-generation 3D V-Cache. The large cache is intended to help workloads such as games that benefit from keeping more data close to the processor. They are not gaming-only chips: their core counts also make them candidates for demanding creator and productivity workloads. The 9950X3D’s 16 cores are the more relevant distinction for heavily threaded work such as rendering, encoding, simulation, or software compilation.

Which model makes more financial sense?
Consider the 9950X3D for mixed high-end workloads
At its $699 launch MSRP, the 9950X3D cost $100 more than the 9900X3D. That premium is easier to justify if the same PC will regularly handle gaming alongside rendering, video production, compiling, or other work that can use more cores. It also offers more headroom for a buyer who wants one premium desktop processor to cover both gaming and multicore tasks.

The trade-offs are the higher purchase price and 170 W default TDP. The additional cores may have little value in a gaming-focused build, so compare actual independent benchmarks for the games and applications you use before paying extra.
Consider the 9900X3D when the workload is less core-heavy
The 9900X3D has 12 cores and a 120 W default TDP, with a $599 launch MSRP. It may suit a high-end gaming system or mixed-use PC that does not consistently benefit from 16 cores, while leaving more of the budget for a graphics card, memory, or other components.

For gaming alone, also compare less expensive X3D processors rather than assuming either Ryzen 9 is the best-value choice. The right comparison depends on current prices and independent gaming tests; the $100 launch-price gap does not guarantee the same gap in stores today.

Budget for the whole platform, not just the CPU
Either chip needs an AM5 motherboard, DDR5 memory, and a separately purchased cooler. A discrete graphics card is appropriate for serious gaming, and the full system needs a power supply suited to its components. AMD identifies X870E, X870, B850, and B840 chipsets within the platform ecosystem, but socket compatibility alone does not prove a particular board will boot the processor with its installed firmware.

- Check the motherboard maker’s CPU support list and required BIOS version for the exact processor.
- Allow for the cost of a suitable cooler, especially when planning a sustained heavy workload.
- If moving from AM4 or an Intel platform, include the motherboard and DDR5 in the upgrade budget. An existing AM5 owner may have a smaller upgrade bill, subject to BIOS support.
- At 1440p or 4K, a graphics-card limit can reduce the practical difference between CPUs; application scaling also varies.

What to check on a Newegg listing
- Match the desktop retail SKU: 9950X3D is 100-100000719WOF; 9900X3D is 100-100001368WOF.
- Check whether the offer is sold by Newegg or a marketplace seller. Seller and fulfillment details can change.
- Verify that the page indicates stock that can ship, then review the estimated delivery date; a product page alone does not establish inventory.
- Compare the final price after coupons, shipping, and any bundle components with other offers. Evaluate a bundle by the value of what it actually includes.
- Read the return terms and confirm whether the offer is the retail desktop processor. The standard package does not include a cooler.
- Check the manufacturer’s warranty terms. Newegg’s surfaced 9950X3D listing warns that operating outside AMD’s published specifications may affect warranty coverage.
