HotHardware reported the offer on August 22, 2024. The article also described the price as below AMD’s then-cited $399 webstore price. The 25% figure is an MSRP comparison; it does not necessarily represent a 25% reduction from the processor’s prevailing street price. Taxes and shipping were additional, and the games only had meaningful value if you wanted them and could redeem them.
The advertised free games
The promotion listed:
- Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2
- Unknown 9: Awakening
These were not permanent inclusions with every 7800X3D purchase. They were part of a time-limited AMD campaign tied to eligible purchases, participating retailers, regions, stock, and purchase dates. Codes could be delivered after purchase, and redemption windows or regional restrictions could apply.

How eligibility was supposed to work
According to the deal coverage’s account of AMD’s terms, an Amazon purchase had to show the game promotion at checkout. If the offer was absent on the final checkout screen, the purchase was not eligible for the promotional code.

- Check the item’s condition, seller, and fulfillment details.
- Apply the visible coupon, if one is available.
- Proceed to checkout and confirm that the game promotion or eligibility language appears before ordering.
- Save the order confirmation and any promotion details.

If a promotion was displayed but no code arrived, contact the retailer first and then follow its instructions for contacting AMD or the campaign administrator. Do not assume a headline alone guarantees eligibility.
Beware a different Amazon seller
The original coverage warned that Amazon could surface a cheaper listing from an unfamiliar Chinese marketplace seller. That offer was described as sold and shipped by a third party and did not include the advertised games. This does not mean every marketplace seller is fraudulent; it means the cheaper listing was not the same promotion.

Before paying, inspect:
- Sold by: the exact retailer named in the promotion.
- Ships from: Amazon or the stated participating seller.
- Condition: new retail, not used, renewed, open-box, or imported stock.
- Warranty and returns: especially for marketplace purchases.
- Promotion language: the game offer should be visible on the listing or at checkout.
- Seller history: feedback and sales record are useful risk signals.
A very low price may also indicate missing retail packaging, different warranty coverage, grey-market inventory, or no bundle eligibility.

Its appeal is gaming rather than universal leadership. Extra cache can help games that are CPU-limited, making the chip particularly attractive for high-refresh-rate play, competitive settings, and buyers pairing it with a powerful graphics card. Results vary with the game engine, resolution, GPU, memory, settings, BIOS, and firmware. It should not be described as automatically faster than every newer processor.

An AM4 owner generally cannot install this CPU in an existing AM4 motherboard. Include the motherboard, memory, cooler, shipping, and tax when calculating the real upgrade cost. AM5 can provide an upgrade path, but future compatibility still depends on motherboard support, power delivery, BIOS updates, and AMD’s platform policies.

- New gaming-PC builders: an attractive entry point when the total AM5 platform cost fit the budget.
- AM4 owners: compare the complete platform replacement with an AM4-compatible upgrade before focusing on the CPU discount.
- Productivity-first users: rendering, compiling, virtual machines, and other heavily threaded workloads may favor a higher-core-count processor.
- Buyers who own both games: count little or no practical value for the codes, even if their nominal retail value sounds substantial.
