Amazon’s June 10, 2021 return-to-office guidance set a three-days-in-the-office baseline for eligible corporate employees, with up to two remote days per week. It was not a blanket benefit for every Amazon worker, and it is not the company’s current general policy: Amazon later announced a five-day office expectation for most corporate employees, effective January 2, 2025.
What Amazon announced in June 2021
Amazon’s June 10, 2021 announcement said eligible corporate employees would generally spend three days a week in the office and could work remotely for up to two days. Team leadership would determine which days employees were expected to be on-site. That meant the announcement described a hybrid schedule—not a right to choose any two work-from-home days independently.
Amazon said it was extending its anticipated regular return-to-office date from September 7, 2021, to January 3, 2022, citing changing local COVID-19 conditions. The timing of returns could vary by location.

The guidance applied to corporate roles where working away from an office was an effective option. It did not extend two remote days to Amazon’s entire workforce. Amazon said some employees whose jobs had already been mostly remote, including certain sales and customer-service roles, would remain remote. Roles requiring on-site work—such as hardware engineering and frontline operations—would continue to be performed on-site.

The practical distinction was the work itself, not simply whether someone worked for Amazon. A role dependent on a facility, equipment, or in-person operations did not become remote-eligible under this corporate hybrid guidance.
Exceptions and the separate four-week option
An employee seeking fewer than three office days a week could request an exception, which required approval from a vice president. If approved, the employee would be designated primarily remote and use an agile workspace rather than have a dedicated desk or office.

That exception was separate from another flexibility Amazon described: eligible corporate employees could work fully remotely for up to four weeks per year from a domestic location. It was a limited, temporary arrangement—not permission to work anywhere internationally or to convert a hybrid job into a permanently remote one.

In short, the 2021 guidance described three distinct arrangements: the usual three-days-in-office hybrid baseline; a primarily remote status requiring VP approval; and up to four weeks of fully remote work annually from within the employee’s country.

Why Amazon changed the guidance
Amazon said it wanted to balance flexibility with its view that employees “invent best” when working together in the office. It also said it expected to learn from different working models as pandemic conditions changed. Those were the company’s stated reasons, not a guarantee that the schedule would remain fixed.

What the headline means now
The statement that Amazon employees could work remotely two days a week accurately summarizes a specific June 2021 announcement, provided “employees” is narrowed to eligible corporate roles and the leadership-controlled schedule is made clear. It does not describe Amazon’s current general return-to-office expectation. As of 2026, the relevant company-wide direction for most corporate employees is the five-day office expectation introduced for January 2, 2025, with exceptions depending on role and approved arrangements.
