Amazon quietly introduced a small employee commuter-shuttle pilot in the Seattle region on October 3, 2016. Called Amazon Ride, the service used mostly plain white buses with tinted windows to connect employees in Bellevue, Issaquah, and Redmond with Amazon’s downtown Seattle campus.
It was not public transit and was not announced with a major launch event. It was a limited employee benefit designed to make a dense urban headquarters easier to reach as Amazon’s Seattle workforce expanded.
What Amazon Ride was
Amazon Ride was a regional, employer-provided shuttle system for Amazon employees commuting to the company’s Seattle headquarters. Contemporary reporting observed buses serving Amazon’s Brazil Building in South Lake Union and Doppler Building in the Denny Triangle.
The launch was described as “stealthy” because the buses appeared without a public announcement or launch event. Their white exteriors, tinted windows, and limited Amazon branding made them look like ordinary charter coaches. The visible company logo reported on the vehicles was that of MV Transportation.

Routes and schedules at launch

The three operating routes were estimated to take roughly 30–35 minutes. Issaquah service included a final “sweeper” bus at approximately 7:42 p.m., intended to collect employees who missed earlier departures.
These were launch-period details, not current schedules. The original route map should not be used to plan a commute today.

Who could ride—and how reservations worked
According to the program website described in the launch coverage, Amazon Ride was available to full-time and part-time Amazon employees. Employees’ dogs were also reportedly eligible, an unusual launch-period feature that should not be assumed to remain in effect.
Riders could reserve seats through an app up to two weeks in advance. The program also offered a “Guaranteed Ride Home” benefit for qualifying emergencies or late work situations, reportedly up to five times per year. That provision was emergency coverage, not a promise of regular late-night transportation.
More than 500 employees had reportedly signed up during the launch period, including 278 registered for the Issaquah route. Those figures show initial interest, but they do not establish long-term ridership, occupancy, cost savings, or program success.

What the buses looked like
The buses were large vehicles resembling charter coaches, with white paint and tinted windows and little obvious Amazon branding. The contemporary report estimated that they could carry more than 60 passengers, although that was an observation rather than an official seating specification. Some observed buses had approximately 15–20 passengers disembark at Amazon buildings.

The careful conclusion is that MV’s logo was visible and that GeekWire reported MV appeared to be involved.
Why Amazon launched the pilot
Amazon said employees valued working in the center of the city and that more than half of its employees arrived without a car. The company presented Amazon Ride as another way to support a more sustainable urban campus.

That explanation addressed more than environmental concerns. A downtown headquarters also creates practical commuting challenges:
- Parking is expensive and limited.
- Suburban employees may face complicated transfers on public transit.
- Fixed shuttle routes can provide a more predictable trip to the office.
- A reliable commuter benefit can make a central-city workplace more attractive to employees and applicants.
Amazon’s sustainability rationale should remain attributed to the company. The available sources do not quantify emissions reductions, displaced car trips, parking savings, or the occupancy level needed to produce an environmental benefit.
How Amazon Ride fit into Seattle transportation
Amazon Ride was one layer in a larger transportation network. Employees could also use King County Metro buses, the South Lake Union Streetcar, walking routes, cars and parking garages, ride-hailing services, scooters, and an existing SLU Shuttle circulating around Amazon’s campus and nearby neighborhoods.

The distinction matters:
- Amazon Ride: Suburban-to-campus commuter service.
- SLU Shuttle: Local circulation around the campus and surrounding neighborhoods.
- Public transit: Services operated by agencies such as King County Metro.
- Later Amazon programs: Expanded, location-specific commuter and intercampus services that should not be treated as identical to the 2016 pilot.
Microsoft’s branded Connector system offered a prominent local comparison. Amazon’s nearly unbranded buses looked more provisional, even though both reflected the growing role of employer-sponsored transportation in the Seattle technology sector.
Did the small pilot become a larger system?
Later evidence indicates that employer transportation became a much broader part of Amazon’s Puget Sound strategy. In a January 2025 update, Amazon said it had more than 30 commuter-shuttle routes serving areas including Mill Creek, North Bend, and West Seattle. It also described intercampus service between Seattle, Bellevue, and Redmond, shuttles from transit hubs, a Lyft Pass program in Seattle and Bellevue, and a partnership with BellHop, which Amazon described as an all-electric shuttle service in the Pacific Northwest.
Those later offerings demonstrate expansion beyond the original three-route experiment. They do not prove that every 2016 route, vehicle, rule, or brand continued unchanged.
What Amazon employees should know now
Amazon’s current U.S. benefits information says free shuttle programs are available only in certain regions and that benefits can vary by work location, scheduled hours, employment duration, employment status, and other conditions.
As a result, employees should check their local HR resources or internal transportation tools for current routes, reservation rules, eligibility, accessibility information, and late-shift coverage. Contractors, contingent workers, warehouse associates, visitors, and members of the public should not assume they can use the service based on the 2016 report.
What remains unknown about the 2016 launch
The available reporting does not provide Amazon Ride’s fare policy, operating cost, insurance or accessibility arrangements, long-term ridership, post-launch route performance, or measured effect on traffic and emissions. It also does not explain precisely why Bellevue, Issaquah, and Redmond were selected or whether the pilot was primarily intended as a sustainability initiative, a parking solution, a recruiting benefit, or a combination of all three.
