Yes—Amazon really did make Rufus available to all U.S. customers, but that happened on July 12, 2024. Amazon’s conversational shopping assistant was later renamed and folded into a broader experience called Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026.
For shoppers, the practical takeaway is that Rufus was not a separate app or subscription. Its successor remains integrated into Amazon’s shopping app and website, where it can help compare products, research purchases, track prices, and manage some shopping tasks. Amazon says the app and website experience does not require Prime membership, an Echo device, or an additional fee.
Amazon Rufus: what happened and what it does now
Amazon introduced Rufus as a generative-AI shopping assistant in beta in early 2024. On July 12, 2024, Amazon announced that it was available to all U.S. customers in the Amazon Shopping app and on Amazon.com’s desktop experience.

That original “launch” framing is now historical. On May 13, 2026, Amazon said it had combined Rufus’s shopping expertise with Alexa+ personalization and conversational context under the name Alexa for Shopping. You may therefore see Alexa branding rather than a Rufus icon.

Amazon says Rufus helped more than 300 million customers research, compare, and buy products in 2025. That figure is Amazon’s own reported usage claim, not an independent measurement.
The timeline
- Early 2024: Rufus begins as a beta for a limited group of customers in Amazon’s mobile app.
- July 12, 2024: Amazon says Rufus is available to all U.S. customers in the Shopping app and on desktop.
- May 13, 2026: Amazon announces Alexa for Shopping, folding Rufus capabilities into the newer experience.

What Rufus originally did
Rufus was designed for conversational product research rather than simple keyword search. Shoppers could ask questions such as:
- What should I look for when buying a particular type of product?
- How do two products differ?
- Which option suits a specific use case, event, budget, or recipient?
- What accessories or supplies are needed for a project or recipe?
- What do customer reviews and product information suggest?
Amazon said Rufus could draw on its product catalog, customer reviews, community questions and answers, and information from across the web. AWS says the system uses Amazon Bedrock and multiple large-language-model components to support its conversational shopping experience; that describes the technology infrastructure, not a guarantee that every answer is accurate.
What Alexa for Shopping can do now
Amazon describes the current successor as a more capable shopping assistant. Depending on the product, account, device, and feature rollout, it can:

- Create personalized shopping guides for major purchases.
- Use shopping history and preferences to tailor recommendations.
- Show up to a year of price history where available.
- Track prices and identify deals.
- Add products to a cart or reorder routine essentials.
- Help set up purchases at a target price.
- Find products from other online stores.
- Send shoppers directly to another merchant through a “Shop Direct” experience.
Amazon also describes a “Buy for Me” feature that can let Amazon purchase an item on a customer’s behalf. Availability and eligibility are feature-dependent, so shoppers should review the final item, seller, price, shipping details, and payment authorization before allowing an automated purchase.
How to access it today
Amazon Shopping app
- Update the Amazon Shopping app.
- Open the app while signed in to your Amazon account.
- Look for the shopping-assistant or Alexa-related icon and open the chat experience.
- Ask a question or select a suggested prompt.
Amazon’s original instructions referred to a Rufus icon showing chat bubbles with a sparkle in the bottom navigation bar. Because the service was renamed in 2026, the label and icon may now appear as Alexa or Alexa for Shopping instead.

- Visit Amazon.com and sign in.
- Look for the shopping-assistant or Alexa-related control near the search area or upper portion of the page.
- Enter a shopping question and review the results.
Echo Show
Amazon also supports Alexa for Shopping on Echo Show devices, which add voice and touch interaction. An Echo device is not required to use the experience through Amazon’s app or website.
If the feature is missing, check that you are signed in, update the app, try Amazon.com, and remember that individual features may not be available to every account, product, device, or rollout group.
Is Alexa for Shopping free?
Amazon says Alexa for Shopping is available to signed-in customers at no additional charge through the Amazon Shopping app and website. Amazon also says Prime membership, an Echo device, and the Alexa app are not required for that app and website experience.

That statement should not be expanded to mean that every Alexa+ feature or every Alexa experience on every device is free. The no-additional-charge claim applies to Alexa for Shopping on Amazon’s app and website as described by Amazon.
Does it search the whole internet?
Not in the same way as a neutral, universal search engine. The original Rufus description said it could use information from across the web, but the service was built primarily around shopping within Amazon’s ecosystem.
Alexa for Shopping can now surface products from other online stores and provide “Shop Direct” links, but that does not mean every retailer or product is included, ranked neutrally, or compared on identical terms. A cross-site result may lead to a merchant with different shipping, return, warranty, payment, and customer-service policies.
How Rufus and Alexa for Shopping can affect your budget
The assistant can reduce the time spent narrowing down a purchase, but convenience can also make it easier to buy impulsively. Treat its recommendations as a research shortcut—not as proof that an item is the best value.
Before buying, check:
- Total cost: Include shipping, taxes, memberships, subscriptions, required accessories, and replacement parts.
- Seller: Confirm who is actually selling and fulfilling the item.
- Variant: Make sure the summary refers to the exact size, color, capacity, model, or configuration you intend to buy.
- Compatibility: Verify dimensions, operating requirements, connectors, and compatibility with your existing equipment.
- Returns: Read the current return restrictions and restocking terms.
- Warranty: Check who provides coverage and whether the seller is authorized.
- Delivery: Confirm the promised date before paying more for an urgent purchase.
- Reviews: Read recent reviews and recurring complaints rather than relying only on an AI-generated summary.
A price history can help put a discount in context, but it is not a guarantee that Amazon’s price is the lowest available elsewhere. Compare the complete delivered price across retailers when the purchase is significant.

Accuracy limitations to understand
AI shopping guidance can summarize information quickly, but it may combine details from different variants, repeat an outdated specification, or misunderstand what matters for your use case. Product listings, customer reviews, community answers, and web pages can themselves contain errors or incomplete information.
That makes Alexa for Shopping useful for generating a shortlist or questions to investigate. It is a poor substitute for manufacturer documentation, specialist reviews, or professional advice for medical, electrical, automotive, legal, or other safety-critical purchases.
Amazon’s description of Rufus and its AWS engineering explanation identify the information sources and technology behind the system. Neither source establishes that its recommendations are independent, guaranteed, or professionally tested.

Amazon says Alexa for Shopping can use shopping history, personal preferences, and Alexa context to personalize recommendations. That can make suggestions more relevant, but the benefit comes with a data trade-off: more of your shopping behavior and conversations may inform the experience.

The current product announcements confirm the use of shopping activity and Alexa context for personalization, but they do not by themselves establish every retention period or deletion control. Do not assume that disabling one Alexa or shopping surface disables every related feature.

What changed for shoppers?
If you remember Rufus from the 2024 rollout, the key change is the name and scope. Amazon did not launch Rufus as a standalone chatbot or separate consumer app. It was an integrated shopping feature, and Amazon has now folded its capabilities into Alexa for Shopping alongside broader personalization and agentic shopping functions.
That is why an old guide telling you to find a Rufus icon may no longer match the current interface. Look for Alexa or Alexa for Shopping branding instead, while recognizing that feature availability can vary.
