Amazon did not make its cashierless system simple or inexpensive for every retailer. In September 2023, it added an RFID-enabled version of Just Walk Out alongside its camera-and-sensor system. The RFID option can be a more practical fit for small, controlled stores selling individually tagged goods—especially apparel and event merchandise—because readers identify items as shoppers leave instead of relying only on cameras and sensors to infer what they picked up.
For a business, the important question is not whether checkout disappears. It is whether the store’s products, layout, customer traffic, payment setup and staffing needs make the technology worth its installation and operating costs.
What Amazon changed: RFID is an additional option, not a replacement
In the conventional computer-vision version of Just Walk Out, cameras, sensors and machine-learning models help determine what a shopper takes or puts back. Amazon’s RFID configuration identifies tagged merchandise using readers at the exit. The customer still establishes a payment-linked shopping session at the entrance, but does not scan each product at a register.

Amazon described the RFID configuration as “cost-effective and fast to deploy.” That is the company’s characterization, not a guarantee that an individual store will cost less overall. Amazon developed the offering with Avery Dennison, whose RFID technology is used in retail supply chains.

How an RFID-enabled visit works
- The shopper enters using an accepted card or mobile wallet, or an available Amazon One device. The credential links the visit to a payment method or account.
- Each applicable item has a unique RFID tag.
- The shopper takes merchandise without scanning it at checkout.
- Readers at the exit detect the tagged goods, and the system associates the purchase with the shopping session.
- The linked payment method is charged and a digital receipt is sent after the visit.
Amazon says customers can leave wearing apparel they bought because the exit readers can detect its RFID tag. That convenience depends on the item being tagged and the readers correctly capturing it; RFID is not a substitute for a process to handle unreadable or missing tags.
Why some businesses may find it easier to deploy
With RFID, the system reads an identifier attached to the product rather than having to infer the item solely from a shopper’s hand movements and the surrounding scene. This can be attractive for clothing and merchandise, which may already be part of an item-level tagging program. A retailer may also avoid some of the shelf instrumentation and dense camera coverage associated with a computer-vision deployment.
That does not mean RFID removes the hard parts. The retailer must tag goods, maintain accurate item data, position and maintain readers, connect the store to payment and retail systems, and resolve exceptions. The complexity shifts: less reliance on one kind of sensing may mean more dependence on tagging discipline and item-level inventory processes.

The format matters as much as the technology. A compact stadium shop with a predictable entry and exit and a curated assortment is a different problem from a large grocery store with fresh goods, a wide range of products and shoppers filling carts.
Where it is most likely to make sense
- Stadiums and arenas: Shoppers often want merchandise or refreshments quickly during a limited window. Amazon’s initial RFID pilot was at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena. It later reported an RFID-enabled Seahawks merchandise store at Lumen Field. Amazon’s case study said one location had an 85% increase in transactions per game and a 112% increase in sales per game compared with the previous concession location. These are vendor-reported case-study figures, not independently audited results or a forecast for other venues.
- Airports and travel locations: A controlled footprint and time-pressed customers can make fast entry and exit useful, including outside ordinary retail hours.
- Convenience stores: Smaller baskets and mission-driven visits can suit a quick in-and-out experience. Amazon promotes Just Walk Out for this format, but each operator still needs to assess traffic, assortment and operating costs.
- Hospitals, universities and workplaces: Compact stores can support extended hours or 24/7 access. Some deployments may support authorized employees using badges, but payment and access arrangements vary by implementation.
Amazon’s third-party materials describe Just Walk Out deployments across these settings and a certified partner network for sales, infrastructure and integration support. A venue should verify which hardware, payment methods and services are available in its country and for its particular store design.
Why Amazon’s grocery experience is a useful caution
In April 2024, Amazon said it would remove Just Walk Out from U.S. Amazon Fresh grocery stores and use Dash Carts in those larger-format stores. Amazon said shoppers buying larger grocery baskets valued a cart that stayed with them, showed a running total and helped with deals and product navigation. That is a different shopping mission from buying a jersey or a few convenience items.

On January 27, 2026, Amazon said it was closing its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores and converting various locations to Whole Foods Market stores. That is a major change in Amazon’s company-owned retail footprint, but it does not mean the company has ended Just Walk Out as a technology service for other operators. Amazon’s retail strategy, its third-party technology business and individual deployment types should be considered separately.

- Store layout and access: A workable entrance and exit, reader or gate placement, accessible routes and a plan for queues and people leaving together.
- Product readiness: An accurate catalog and item identifiers; for RFID, an item-tagging process that covers new stock, replacements, returns and exceptions.
- Hardware and infrastructure: RFID readers and entry/exit equipment for an RFID setup, or cameras and sensors for a computer-vision setup, plus reliable power and network connectivity.
- Payment and retail integration: Entry authorization, payment processing, tax, promotions, receipts, reporting, refunds and compatibility with existing POS workflows.
- Inventory and loss prevention: Replenishment, stock accuracy, tag-read monitoring, shrink controls and procedures for merchandise that leaves without a valid charge.
- People and customer support: Staff or support coverage for returns, age checks, failed payments, disputed receipts, damaged tags and equipment outages.
- Compliance and access: Local review of payment rules, video notices and retention, biometric features if separately offered, accessibility, and any requirement to offer cash or another non-digital route.
Amazon does not publish standard Just Walk Out installation or subscription pricing in the sources available here. A buyer should expect a quote based on the store, assortment, country, infrastructure and integration work—not assume that “easier to deploy” means a low fixed price. Ask for a deployment assessment and a complete cost model that includes installation, tags and tagging labor, payments, maintenance, support, shrink and return handling.
Payment arrangements also vary by market. For example, Amazon and Stripe announced support for Just Walk Out retailers in Australia and Canada using Stripe Terminal readers and Stripe Connect payment routing. That announcement is specific to those countries; it should not be treated as the payment architecture or pricing for every region.
Privacy and human involvement: separate the systems
RFID-based item identification is different from the camera-and-sensor methods used by computer-vision Just Walk Out. Amazon says its standard Just Walk Out system does not collect biometric information, while Amazon One is a separate palm-recognition service that may be offered as an entry or payment credential in some deployments. A business should explain the actual technology used at its site and review applicable local notice and data rules.

Amazon says ordinary receipts are generated automatically, not written by people remotely watching every shopper. It also says associates label or annotate data to improve models and that a human may review a video snippet in a small minority of difficult cases. So neither “people manually watch every trip” nor “there is no human involvement” is an accurate blanket description.
Common failure cases to plan for
- Missing or unreadable tag: Establish a way to identify the item, correct the receipt and restore accurate inventory.
- Several people exit together: Test how the system associates items with sessions and how staff resolve uncertainty.
- Changed mind or misplaced merchandise: Decide how a shopper can return an item or correct a charge after crossing the exit point.
- Tag moved to the wrong product, opened packaging or a bundle: Define controls for mis-tagging, multipacks and products whose tags are separated from the goods.
- Age-restricted products: Keep an age-verification process; automated checkout does not remove legal obligations.
- Payment failure or receipt dispute: Provide a support channel and a process for checking a charge and issuing a correction or refund.
- Network, reader or gate outage: Define whether the store pauses entry, switches to staffed checkout or closes until the system is restored.
- Cash or non-digital access requirement: Decide whether a staffed alternative is needed and whether it is compatible with local requirements.
How to decide whether to evaluate it
RFID-enabled Just Walk Out is worth evaluating when the assortment is mostly taggable, the store is compact and controlled, purchases are small and time-sensitive, and the operator can sustain accurate tagging and inventory workflows. Existing RFID use is a practical advantage.
It is a weaker fit if the business depends on cash acceptance but has no alternative process, sells many products that cannot be reliably tagged, has large varied baskets, lacks item-level data, or cannot staff customer-service and exception handling. In those cases, conventional checkout, smart carts or a different automation approach may be more suitable.

Compare the expected throughput or extended-hours benefit with all-in costs and operational risks. The relevant measure is not simply fewer checkout steps; it is whether the deployment improves the store’s economics and customer experience without creating a more expensive set of problems elsewhere.
