Amazon Technologies Inc. sued Nokia in Delaware on July 30, 2024, alleging that Nokia products including AirFrame, CloudBand and Nuage Networks offerings infringed 12 Amazon patents covering cloud infrastructure and virtual networking. The case was later marked closed by a public tracker, but the accessible record does not establish how it ended. The filing was an allegation—not a finding that Nokia infringed—and it did not name AWS as a plaintiff or establish an immediate threat to customers.
The case at a glance
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Filed | July 30, 2024 |
| Court and case | U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, Amazon Technologies, Inc. v. Nokia Corporation et al., No. 1:24-cv-00891 |
| Plaintiff | Amazon Technologies, Inc. |
| Defendants | Nokia Corporation, Nokia Solutions and Networks Oy, and Nokia of America Corporation |
| Patent count | 12 U.S. patents, according to complaint analysis and contemporary coverage |
| Relief sought | Amazon sought injunctive relief and monetary damages, according to a contemporary legal update |
The public docket records a patent-infringement action under 35 U.S.C. § 271 and Amazon’s jury demand. Nokia received an extension to respond until November 25, 2024. The docket establishes that the suit was filed; it does not, by itself, establish that any patent was infringed.
What Amazon alleged
Amazon’s complaint claimed that Nokia’s cloud and network-virtualization products used patented techniques for operating distributed computing systems and managing virtual networks. In plain terms, the allegations touched tasks such as adding or changing computing capacity while workloads run, configuring virtual machines, creating logical networks over physical infrastructure, applying network policies and providing secure access to private networks.
These are infrastructure functions rather than consumer-facing features such as video playback. They matter in telecom cloud environments, where network functions that once ran on dedicated hardware can be deployed and managed as software across shared computing resources. Amazon framed Nokia’s cloud strategy as a later move into an area where Amazon had developed technology; that is Amazon’s litigation narrative, not an established finding about Nokia’s history or conduct.

Which Nokia products were implicated?
Complaint analyses identify three product families. “Implicated” here means named in Amazon’s allegations; it does not mean a court found the products infringing.
| Product family | Role in broad terms | Functions discussed in the allegations |
|---|---|---|
| AirFrame Data Center | Cloud infrastructure for computing workloads | Managing computing nodes and workloads across physical and virtualized resources, including resource allocation and scaling |
| CloudBand | Infrastructure software and application management for network functions | Orchestrating virtual network functions, placing and scaling resources, monitoring performance and responding to thresholds; analyses also discuss OpenStack Neutron, distributed virtual routers and VPN services |
| Nuage Networks | Software-defined networking and virtualized network services | Creating overlay networks, logical subnets and virtual routers; routing and switching; handling ARP requests and applying network policies |
The allegations covered particular functions and configurations, not necessarily every module, customer deployment or product sold under those names. A product’s use of an open-source component, such as OpenStack, would not by itself establish infringement or liability for every company connected to that component.

The patents concerned infrastructure building blocks
The publicly indexed complaint analysis describes patents involving virtual networking, distributed execution, computing-node communications, program execution across systems, logical networking, virtual-machine configuration, secure remote access and virtual-network policy functions. Identified examples include U.S. Patent Nos. 11,516,080 (virtual networking devices and routing information), 9,329,909 and 8,296,419 (modifying computing or execution clusters), 9,766,912 (virtual-machine configuration), and 9,756,018 (secure remote access to private networks).

Amazon Technologies is the plaintiff—not AWS by name
The named plaintiff was Amazon Technologies, Inc., and the defendants were Nokia entities. The case concerned inventions associated with Amazon’s cloud-computing work, but calling it an AWS lawsuit can blur the distinction between a legal entity and a commercial brand. The docket does not name AWS as a separate plaintiff.
Part of a wider patent dispute
This cloud case was distinct from Nokia’s earlier patent litigation against Amazon over video technologies used in streaming services and devices. Amazon’s SEC filing described Nokia’s complaints in multiple jurisdictions, including the United States and several other countries and forums. Nokia later announced a patent agreement with Amazon covering Nokia video technologies in Amazon’s streaming services and devices. Separately, the U.S. International Trade Commission terminated a related investigation into video-capable electronic devices after the companies jointly sought termination based on settlement agreements, as recorded in the Federal Register.

Those video-related developments do not establish the outcome of Amazon’s cloud-patent case. The disputes involved different patent portfolios, products and technical issues.
What the case could have meant for Nokia customers
A patent suit can create business uncertainty and, depending on its outcome, could lead to licensing, product changes, damages or an injunction. Those are possible consequences, not facts about this case. The available material does not show that Nokia customers experienced an outage, were required to migrate, or lost access to AirFrame, CloudBand or Nuage services because of this complaint.

For an enterprise buyer, the practical questions would be whether a specific product or deployment was named, what Nokia’s contract says about intellectual-property claims and indemnification, and whether the supplier issued a customer notice. No customer notice or service disruption is established by the sources cited here.
What is known about the outcome
A public case tracker marks the Delaware action closed and shows activity through April 15, 2025. The accessible primary docket material does not establish whether the case ended in settlement, dismissal, licensing or another resolution. A secondary report describes a stipulated dismissal without prejudice, but without the underlying final court filing that should not be treated as definitive. No merits ruling, damages award or product ban is established by the available record.
