Short answer: Amazon’s Labor Day 2024 promotion was genuinely strong, but it is not a confirmed live deal today. The 13-inch MacBook Air M3 fell to $899, while the 15-inch version reached $1,049. Later Prime Day coverage reported the 13-inch model at $799, so the old Labor Day prices were excellent for their time—not guaranteed current bargains.
The original deal is still useful as a benchmark for judging any remaining M3 inventory or renewed discount. Before buying, compare the current M3 price with the newer MacBook Air generation, and check the exact memory, storage, seller, condition, and return policy.

Tom’s Guide independently reported the 15-inch model at $1,049 on September 2, 2024, describing it as matching its previous Prime Day low. Labor Day itself fell on September 2, 2024. The 15-inch version offered the larger dollar discount, but the 13-inch model had the lower total price. Whether either was the better purchase depended mainly on portability and screen size.
Why the discount made the M3 Air compelling
The M3 MacBook Air combined strong everyday performance with a thin, fanless design. It was well suited to browsing, office work, school assignments, video calls, streaming, programming at moderate intensity, and light photo or video editing.
- Performance: Apple’s M3 chip provided substantial headroom for ordinary productivity.
- Quiet operation: The fanless design produced no active cooling noise, although it was not ideal for endless sustained workloads.
- Battery life: Apple claimed up to 18 hours under its testing conditions. Tom’s Guide reported roughly 15 hours in independent testing of the 15-inch model.
- Displays: The 13-inch model used a 13.6-inch, 2560 × 1664 Liquid Retina display; the 15-inch model used a 15.3-inch, 2880 × 1864 panel.
- Convenience: MagSafe charging, USB-C connectivity, Wi‑Fi 6E, and macOS integration strengthened the value for existing Apple users.
The M3 generation also improved external-display support over earlier Air models in the appropriate closed-lid configuration. Buyers running multiple monitors should verify the exact model’s display limitations rather than assuming every setup will work with the laptop open.

13-inch or 15-inch: which deal was better?
Choose the 13-inch Air if portability matters most
The 13-inch model made more sense for students, commuters, frequent travelers, and anyone working in cafés, classrooms, or small spaces. It was also the logical choice for buyers who already used an external monitor at a desk and wanted the lowest-cost route into a modern MacBook.
Choose the 15-inch Air if the laptop is your main screen
The 15-inch model was better for split-screen work, spreadsheets, editing timelines, and media consumption. Its larger chassis also accommodated larger speakers. At $1,049, the $250 reduction made it unusually attractive compared with the 13-inch model, provided the buyer could accept its greater size and weight.
The larger display was not free: the 15-inch version cost $150 more than the discounted 13-inch model and gave up some portability. Screen preference—not processor speed—was the main reason to choose it.

The base configuration was the catch
The headline prices applied to 8GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD. That combination kept the entry price low, but it deserves careful consideration if the laptop is expected to last for many years.

- 256GB storage: Usable for ordinary files, but restrictive for large photo libraries, video projects, games, and local development tools.
- No practical upgrades later: Memory and internal storage are soldered. Buyers should choose their long-term configuration at checkout.
- Limited ports: A USB-C hub or dock may be needed for HDMI, USB-A, SD cards, or Ethernet.
- Sustained performance: The fanless Air is not the right tool for repeated long exports, 3D rendering, or other workloads better served by an actively cooled MacBook Pro.
For a light user, the base model can be a very good low-cost Mac. For creative or technical work, a 16GB/512GB configuration is a safer long-term choice—but only if its price remains meaningfully below a newer-generation Air or a discounted MacBook Pro.
Was Apple really “cringing”?
That phrase is rhetorical, not evidence of a dispute between Apple and Amazon. The meaningful distinction is between Apple’s manufacturer pricing and Amazon’s temporary retail pricing. A retailer can discount inventory below Apple’s standard list price without Apple absorbing the entire discount or directly matching it.

Using the listed prices as the comparison point, Amazon cut roughly 18% from the 13-inch model and 19% from the 15-inch model. That made a previous-generation MacBook much more competitive, especially because the newer generation had not yet displaced the M3 Air at the time.

Only with a date attached. TechRadar called the 15-inch $1,049 price its lowest price ever at the time, while Tom’s Guide said it matched the lowest price it had seen during Prime Day. Those descriptions should not be treated as permanent records.
Later 2026 Prime Day coverage reported the 13-inch M3 at $799, according to TechRadar and Tom’s Guide. That later price shows why “lowest ever” is a time-sensitive claim and why deal shoppers should compare the current offer with recent sale history.

Is the M3 deal still worth buying now?
The original $899 and $1,049 Labor Day prices should be treated as historical reference points. The available research does not verify a current September 2026 Amazon price, seller, stock position, or configuration. Check the live Amazon results and Apple’s current MacBook Air lineup before treating any price as available.
As a practical rule:
- Buy the M3 if it is substantially cheaper than the newer equivalent and your needs are ordinary productivity, browsing, schoolwork, or media.
- Prefer the newer Air if it is within roughly $100–$150 of the M3. The smaller price gap can justify the newer platform, longer expected support runway, and potentially better resale value.
- Choose more memory and storage if you routinely work with large files, many applications, virtual machines, or demanding creative tools.
- Choose a MacBook Pro if sustained performance, extra ports, demanding external displays, or professional workloads matter more than weight and price.
- Wait for a major sale if the discount is modest and you do not need a laptop immediately. Prime Day and Black Friday can produce deeper reductions, although no future price is guaranteed.
Amazon checks to make before checkout
MacBook deal pages can mix new, renewed, and third-party listings. Confirm all of the following:
- The product is new if that is what you intend to buy—not “Renewed” or used.
- The selected memory, storage, screen size, color, and model match the advertised price.
- The seller and fulfillment are acceptable. Amazon hosting a listing does not necessarily mean Amazon is the seller.
- The return window, warranty, and AppleCare+ eligibility are clear.
- The coupon box has been selected if the discount requires one.
- The final cart price has not changed and delivery is available to your ZIP code.
- Sales tax and any AppleCare+ purchase are included in your total budget.
Do not assume every color or configuration shares the same price. A low headline price may apply to only one color, storage tier, seller, or limited stock listing.
