Amazon reported its first year-over-year decline in absolute carbon emissions in 2022: its enterprise-wide footprint fell 0.4%, from about 71.54 million to 71.27 million metric tons of carbon-dioxide equivalent (CO₂e). The result is historically notable, but modest—and later reports show that Amazon’s total emissions rose again.
For investors, lenders and other business readers, the important distinction is between a one-year reduction in total emissions and longer-term efficiency. Amazon also reported a 7% improvement in carbon intensity while net sales grew 9%.
What Amazon’s 0.4% reduction means
Amazon’s 2022 Sustainability Report, published July 18, 2023, put 2022 absolute emissions at approximately 71.27 million metric tons of CO₂e, compared with 71.54 million in 2021. That is a decrease of roughly 0.27 million metric tons, or 0.4%.

- Scope 3: relevant upstream and downstream value-chain emissions, including manufacturing, transportation, packaging and other activities.
Amazon’s carbon methodology is described in its methodology document. The figures are corporate estimates across a very large global value chain, rather than readings from a single meter.
Absolute emissions versus carbon intensity
Amazon separately reported that carbon intensity fell 7% in 2022, measured against gross sales, while net sales increased 9%. Intensity answers a different question: how much emissions were associated with a unit of business activity. A company can reduce intensity while total emissions rise if its business expands quickly enough.

The 2022 result is therefore stronger than an intensity-only improvement: Amazon reported both higher sales and a small fall in total emissions. It is not, however, a 7% cut in total emissions.

Which parts of the footprint changed?
Amazon-reported 2022 estimates were approximately:

Because Scope 3 represented most of the total, supplier, product, construction, packaging and transportation estimates matter greatly. Some Scope 3 categories—including corporate purchases and Amazon-branded products—increased even as capital-goods and transportation-related categories declined. The large reduction in purchased-electricity emissions was sufficient to offset increases in direct operations and selected value-chain categories.
Why Amazon says emissions fell
Amazon attributed the decline primarily to continued renewable-energy investment, operating-efficiency improvements, lower emissions from building construction and lower emissions from third-party transportation. It reported matching or using 90% renewable energy for its global operations in 2022 and announced renewable-energy projects representing about 20 gigawatts of capacity. Those explanations come from Amazon’s reporting; they do not assign a precisely verified share of the 0.4% change to each initiative.
There is also an accounting qualification. Scope 2 can be reported using a market-based method, which reflects contractual instruments such as renewable-energy certificates and other environmental attributes. That is not the same as every Amazon facility physically receiving renewable electricity every hour. Amazon’s methodology discusses both the boundary and accounting choices.
Does this put Amazon on track for net zero?
Amazon and Global Optimism co-founded The Climate Pledge, committing Amazon to net-zero carbon emissions across its global operations by 2040. A single 0.4% annual decline does not establish a linear path to that target.
Net zero also does not mean eliminating every gross emission immediately. It generally requires deep reductions first, with any remaining emissions addressed through appropriate neutralization or removal measures. Progress should therefore be judged over multiple years, by absolute emissions, intensity, the quality of value-chain data and the treatment of renewable-energy claims—not by one headline percentage.
What happened after 2022?
The later record is essential context. Amazon’s 2024 Sustainability Report says absolute emissions increased 6% in 2024 compared with 2023. Its 2025 reporting says emissions increased a further 16% compared with 2024. Amazon also reported continuing intensity improvements, including a 38% decline in carbon intensity since 2019 and a 7% reduction in emissions per shipped unit in its 2025 report.

Amazon changed its carbon-intensity denominator in its 2025 reporting to grams of CO₂e per dollar of revenue and revised historical intensity figures. Comparisons across reports should therefore be made using the stated methodology, not by combining percentages mechanically.

For financial analysis, the 2022 decline is evidence of improved emissions efficiency during a year of sales growth—not proof that climate-related operating risk has disappeared. Amazon’s footprint is heavily exposed to the scale of logistics, data centers, construction, electricity procurement and suppliers. Rising absolute emissions in subsequent reports show why lenders, investors and procurement teams should examine both total emissions and intensity, along with methodology changes and value-chain coverage.
The practical takeaway is to treat the 2022 figure as a useful data point, not a trend forecast. Ask whether future growth is accompanied by falling absolute emissions, credible supplier data, durable renewable-energy procurement and progress toward the 2040 goal.

Amazon’s 0.4% emissions reduction was a genuine, first reported annual fall in absolute emissions for 2022, achieved while sales grew. But it was small, depends partly on complex value-chain and market-based accounting, and was not sustained: later reports show emissions rising again. The fairest conclusion is improved efficiency, not a completed or proven path to net zero.
