Amazon’s AI shopping assistant is real, but “Amazon’s AI Product Platform” is not its official current name. The consumer tool formerly known as Rufus is being integrated with Alexa+ shopping capabilities under the name Alexa for Shopping. In the U.S., shoppers can use it through the Amazon Shopping app and Amazon’s website without Prime membership or an Echo device.
It can speed up product research, summarize reviews, compare options, monitor prices, rebuild routine orders, and—on eligible purchases—take actions on your behalf. But it does not guarantee the best product or price. Treat its answers as a starting point, then verify the exact listing, seller, total cost, delivery promise, and return terms.
What happened to Rufus?
Amazon introduced Rufus as a generative AI shopping assistant that could answer product questions and help shoppers compare items. On May 13, 2026, Amazon announced Alexa for Shopping, a unified experience combining Rufus’s shopping capabilities with Alexa+ personalization.

The names refer to different layers of Amazon’s AI ecosystem:

- Alexa+: Amazon’s broader assistant experience, whose saved context can inform shopping interactions.
- Amazon Bedrock: An AWS developer platform that Amazon says helps power Rufus at scale. It is not the shopping app consumers open.
Amazon says Rufus uses multiple models selected according to factors such as query type, quality, latency, and engagement. That technical infrastructure matters to Amazon, but shoppers do not need Bedrock to use Alexa for Shopping.
Where Alexa for Shopping is available
As of August 18, 2026, Amazon says Alexa for Shopping is available to U.S. customers through:
- The Amazon Shopping app.
- Amazon’s website.
- Echo Show devices, which support the broader Amazon store experience through voice, touch, or both.
Amazon says access through the app and website does not require Prime membership or an Echo device. That does not mean non-Prime shoppers receive Prime discounts or delivery benefits.

Availability and labels can vary by country, account, device, app version, and rollout stage. Amazon may show the assistant as Alexa for Shopping, Rufus, a shopping-assistant control, or an option in the main search interface.
How to start
- Update the Amazon Shopping app.
- Sign in to the Amazon account you use for shopping.
- Look for the Alexa for Shopping or shopping-assistant control in navigation or search. Older Rufus instructions referred to a chat bubble with a sparkle.
- On desktop, try the main search bar or the assistant control while signed in.
- Ask a natural-language question, review the response, and open the underlying product listings before buying.
If the feature is missing, try the main search bar, the desktop website, or the latest app version. The account or marketplace may not yet be eligible.

Answer product questions
You can ask questions about how a product fits a particular use case, such as:

Amazon says Rufus can draw from product listings, customer reviews, community questions and answers, and other information sources. That breadth can make discovery faster, but it is not the same as independently verifying every claim.
Compare products and categories
Alexa for Shopping can compare similar products, features, use cases, and value trade-offs. Amazon also describes dynamic comparisons and AI-generated overviews appearing in search and on product-detail pages.
Before accepting a comparison, check that the products have equivalent:
- Model numbers and generations.
- Sizes, capacities, colors, and configurations.
- Bundles and included accessories.
- Warranties and seller conditions.
- New, used, or refurbished status.
A conversational comparison can silently normalize differences that materially affect the purchase.
Summarize customer reviews
The assistant can identify themes in customer reviews and answer questions about them. This is useful when a listing has thousands of reviews, but a summary should not replace reading recent negative reviews.

Reviews may also be grouped across variations or sellers, so confirm that the comments concern the exact item you intend to buy.

Personalize recommendations
Amazon says recommendations can use browsing activity, searches, purchases, stated preferences, and Alexa context. The assistant may remember information about a household, pets, interests, or recurring needs and use it in later recommendations.
That can reduce repetitive explanations, but personalization is not perfect knowledge of your preferences. It also operates inside Amazon’s retail and advertising environment. Amazon Ads says sponsored advertising can appear in the Alexa for Shopping experience, including Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands prompts. A shopper should distinguish between an organic recommendation, sponsored placement, an availability-driven substitution, and a suggestion shaped by purchase history.
Build shopping lists and reorder essentials
The assistant can help rebuild a cart, reorder products from past activity, suggest alternatives when an item is unavailable, and turn a recipe, project, trip, or event into a supply list.

Track prices and set alerts
Amazon says shoppers can ask about historical prices and set a target-price alert. Amazon Ads says the current experience can show up to a year of price history, although the display may vary by product, account, geography, and interface.
Price history is context, not proof that a deal is good. The real cost can change after coupons, shipping, taxes, membership discounts, bundle differences, and seller changes. A price alert also is not a guaranteed lowest-price notification.
Take actions on your behalf
Agentic shopping features can include adding products to a cart, creating price-triggered purchase instructions, buying eligible Amazon products, sending you to another merchant through Shop Direct, or using Buy for Me for eligible products from participating outside stores.

AWS describes one auto-buy workflow that can complete a purchase within 30 minutes after the target price is reached, using default payment and shipping details. This is a documented example, not a guarantee that every product, account, or market supports the same behavior.
Amazon says Buy for Me can cover tens of millions of products from other online stores. Eligibility may depend on the merchant, product, location, account, and checkout conditions. For an external purchase, verify the final merchant, total price, delivery promise, return policy, and payment confirmation.
Prompts that produce more useful answers
Vague prompts tend to produce generic recommendations. Include constraints and ask the assistant to expose uncertainty.
I need [product] for [use case]. My budget is [amount]. Must-have features are [list]. Exclude [deal-breakers].Compare these products by durability, total cost, warranty, and suitability for [use case].What are the biggest complaints in recent reviews?Which specifications are missing from this listing?Show me the exact model numbers and explain whether these products are equivalent.Tell me what could make this recommendation wrong.Notify me when this exact variation reaches [price]. Do not purchase automatically.
For compatibility-sensitive purchases, add the exact device, model, dimensions, voltage, connector, operating system, or part number. Then ask what additional information would change the recommendation.
What Alexa for Shopping cannot reliably do
- Guarantee the best price: A historical price or alert does not cover every retailer, coupon, shipping charge, or configuration.
- Verify every product claim: The assistant may repeat inaccurate, incomplete, or outdated listing information.
- Replace professional advice: Health, safety, legal, financial, child-use, and security decisions require appropriate expert guidance.
- Detect every counterfeit or fraudulent listing: Always investigate unfamiliar sellers and unusually attractive offers.
- Understand nuanced fit perfectly: Taste, sizing, allergies, ergonomics, and professional requirements can be difficult to infer.
- Remove commercial incentives: The assistant exists within Amazon’s marketplace, retail, and advertising systems.
Amazon describes the product as evolving and says it continues to test and improve its AI shopping features. Prices, inventory, delivery estimates, and product information can change after an answer is generated.
When to use it—and when to slow down

Privacy and purchase-control trade-offs
More account context can make recommendations more relevant. The trade-off is that Amazon says shopping activity, preferences, purchases, and Alexa conversations can inform the experience across devices and services.

Use the available account and assistant controls to ask what information is remembered and correct or remove inaccurate preferences where possible. Avoid sharing sensitive medical, financial, or household information unless it is necessary. Before enabling autonomous buying, confirm the default payment method, shipping address, target price, exact variation, and whether the action purchases immediately after the threshold is met.
For expensive or consequential products, choose notification-only price alerts and retain final approval.
A safer shopping workflow
- Define the decision: Tell the assistant your use case, budget, must-haves, and deal-breakers.
- Shortlist: Ask it to compare a small number of exact products and model numbers.
- Challenge the result: Ask for the largest review complaints, missing specifications, and reasons its recommendation could be wrong.
- Open the evidence: Read the product page, manufacturer documentation, recent negative reviews, warranty, and return terms.
- Check the economics: Compare total cost, including coupons, shipping, taxes, subscriptions, and seller differences.
- Approve deliberately: Use automation mainly for low-risk repeat purchases. Keep human approval for high-value, safety-sensitive, or compatibility-sensitive items.
How to recover when something goes wrong
The assistant is missing
Update the app, confirm the correct account and supported Amazon marketplace, try the main search bar, and check the desktop website. The feature may not yet be available for the account or region.
The answer identifies the wrong product
Ask for the exact model number and source listing. Compare generations, variations, and seller details yourself before proceeding.
The recommendation ignores your needs
Rewrite the prompt with a budget, use case, must-have features, deal-breakers, dimensions, compatibility requirements, and delivery deadline. Ask which missing fact would change the result.
A price alert triggers unexpectedly
Confirm the threshold, exact variation, payment method, shipping address, and whether the alert is notification-only or authorizes an immediate purchase. For costly items, disable automatic buying.

Give priority to the product-detail page, manufacturer documentation, warranty terms, seller information, and final checkout screen. Treat the conversational summary as an error-prone convenience layer.
How much difference does it make?
Amazon says more than 300 million customers used Rufus in 2025 and that it helped generate nearly $12 billion in incremental annualized sales. AWS has also reported that Rufus users were 60% more likely to complete a purchase. These are Amazon-reported figures; the association does not independently prove that the assistant caused the purchases or improved shoppers’ decisions.
The practical benefit is narrower and easier to judge: Alexa for Shopping can reduce the time spent opening listings, extracting specifications, comparing products, scanning review themes, and monitoring prices. Whether it helps you buy better depends on the quality of the listing data, the prompt, the product category, and your verification.
