Amazon’s AI review summaries are a real shopping feature, but they did not launch in 2026. Amazon announced Review Highlights on August 14, 2023, initially for a subset of U.S. mobile shoppers. The feature has since expanded across a broad selection of products and is generally labeled “Customers say.” It condenses recurring themes and sentiment from customer reviews; it is not a set of AI-written testimonials or an independent product test.
What Amazon’s “Customers say” feature is
Review Highlights is a short, automatically updated paragraph placed above the customer reviews on eligible product-detail pages. It identifies product attributes that customers mention repeatedly and summarizes whether the comments are mostly positive, neutral, or negative.
Depending on the listing, highlighted attributes can include picture quality, remote performance, installation, speed, fit, battery life, noise, durability, or ease of use. Selecting an attribute can reveal how often customers mentioned it, the general sentiment, and snippets from reviews discussing that point.

Amazon describes Review Highlights as a way to understand common themes “at a glance.” It does not replace the star-rating distribution, establish that a product is objectively good or bad, or show every important complaint.

Calling this a new 2026 rollout would be misleading. The current story is expansion and continuing availability, not a first launch.
How to find Review Highlights
- Open Amazon.com or the Amazon Shopping app.
- Search for the product and open its product-detail page.
- Select the customer-review section or the star rating.
- Look above the reviews for the paragraph labeled “Customers say.”
- Select a highlighted product attribute to view mention frequency, sentiment, and relevant review snippets when those details are available.
If no paragraph appears, Amazon says the product may not have enough written reviews containing a shared mention. Eligibility, country, account, device, app version, category, and listing presentation may also affect what a shopper sees; Amazon does not promise universal coverage.

What Amazon says the summaries use
Written review content
Amazon says Review Highlights are generated from customer-review text and that the highlight-generation corpus uses text reviews from Amazon Verified Purchases. This does not mean every review displayed on the product page is a verified purchase or that non-verified reviews are excluded from Amazon’s broader review system.

Amazon says multiple customers must express a shared opinion before it generates a highlight. Amazon has not published the exact numerical threshold in the cited guidance. The requirement may reduce one-off noise, but it can also leave out a serious problem reported by only a few buyers.

Amazon’s review safeguards
Amazon says it uses machine learning and human investigators to detect suspected fake reviews and uses a trusted verified-purchase corpus for Review Highlights. Those are Amazon’s descriptions of its safeguards, not independent proof that every source review is authentic or that every summary is unbiased.
How to use the summary without overtrusting it
Use it as an index when
- A product has hundreds or thousands of reviews and you need recurring themes quickly.
- You are comparing several products and want an initial shortlist.
- You care about a specific attribute such as setup, fit, battery life, noise, or durability.
- The listing has enough recent written activity for repeated patterns to be meaningful.
Read the underlying reviews when
- The purchase is expensive, safety-sensitive, health-related, or difficult to return.
- Ratings are mixed or the summary omits a problem that appears important.
- The product may have changed model, supplier, firmware, packaging, size, or capacity.
- You need long-term reliability details or have an unusual, highly specific concern.
- The listing has many ratings but few detailed written reviews.
A practical verification routine
- Read the “Customers say” paragraph.
- Open each highlighted attribute and inspect both positive and negative snippets.
- Sort or filter for recent reviews.
- Read several two-, three-, and four-star reviews, not only the one-star and five-star extremes.
- Check whether complaints concern the exact model, size, color, bundle, seller, batch, or product revision you would buy.
- Compare the review evidence with the listing’s specifications, return policy, and warranty.
Where an AI summary can mislead
Frequent does not mean important
The system emphasizes recurring themes. A common but minor observation can receive more attention than a rare defect that matters greatly to a particular shopper.

Minority opinions can disappear
Because Amazon requires a shared opinion, a legitimate issue mentioned by only a few customers may not become a highlighted attribute. The threshold is a generation rule, not an accuracy guarantee.

Sentiment labels lose context
A green check, orange minus, or gray indicator communicates a broad sentiment classification. It may not preserve qualifications such as “excellent after installation,” “good only for small rooms,” or “comfortable but runs small.”

The source reviews still matter
Review Highlights do not independently test a product. They inherit weaknesses in the source material, including vague or contradictory comments, outdated experiences, seller-specific problems, and potentially manipulated content.
Amazon has not provided, in the cited pages, a measurable accuracy or error rate, model name, confidence score, or audit methodology for Review Highlights. A 2025 Harvard Business School working paper examines whether AI summaries of Amazon reviews can overrepresent fake reviews, but that study should not be treated as proof that Amazon’s current implementation is systematically unreliable without assessing its methods and applicability: read the working paper.

Bottom line for shoppers
Amazon’s “Customers say” panel is best treated as a fast index into a large review corpus. It can reveal repeated themes and help you decide which reviews to read, but it is not a definitive verdict, an independent quality test, or evidence that every customer experience is represented. For costly, safety-sensitive, version-dependent, or hard-to-return purchases, use the summary to start your investigation and then verify the details in recent, mixed-star reviews and the product’s specifications, warranty, and return terms.
