Amazon AGI Lab leader David Luan left the company in February 2026, after announcing his departure on February 24. His exit followed the departure of Rohit Prasad, who had overseen Amazon’s broader AGI efforts and left at the end of 2025. The two departures came amid a leadership consolidation and later job cuts—but the available evidence points to a reorganization of Amazon’s AI work, not a complete retreat from large models.
David Luan led a lab focused on AI agents
Luan was a vice president at Amazon and led its San Francisco-based AGI Lab, a group formally established in December 2024 to work on more capable AI agents. In February 2026, he said he would leave at the end of that week “to cook up something new,” according to GeekWire’s report of his announcement. Public reporting describes the move as a departure; it does not establish that Amazon fired him.
Luan joined Amazon in 2024 through a high-profile hiring arrangement involving Adept leaders and employees. Adept was associated with developing AI agents that could use computers and carry out tasks. That made Luan’s exit notable not just as a change at the top of one lab, but as a loss of a senior figure recruited through Amazon’s effort to bring in agent-focused expertise. GeekWire reported, based on its review of LinkedIn profiles, that four of five Adept co-founders who joined Amazon had since left; that is a media outlet’s tally, not an Amazon-confirmed figure.

Luan’s departure should not be confused with Rohit Prasad’s. Prasad was the senior executive overseeing Amazon’s broader AGI efforts. Amazon announced in December 2025 that he would leave at year-end. Luan, by contrast, led the AGI Lab within the wider effort and left in February 2026.

That distinction matters because headlines calling either person “Amazon’s AGI chief” can suggest a single role or a single departure. Amazon’s December 2025 leadership announcement described a wider reorganization: Peter DeSantis was assigned responsibility for large AI models, including Nova and the organization Amazon called AGI, alongside custom silicon and quantum computing. The same announcement said Pieter Abbeel would lead the frontier-model research team.
The lab’s structure changed after the leadership exits
The sequence suggests a shift away from the AGI Lab as a distinct organizational unit. The Information reported that Amazon shut down the former AGI Lab during a broader restructuring, while frontier-model research continued under Abbeel within the larger organization. That account is not an official Amazon announcement, so it is best understood as reported organizational change rather than a company-confirmed description of every team or project.

Reuters reported on July 22, 2026, that Amazon had cut jobs in its AGI organization and that the work had been consolidated under DeSantis. Amazon did not disclose the full number of AGI roles eliminated in the report. Reuters also cited online posts from employees associated with teams led by Adeeb Shanaa and Vishal Sharma; those posts do not establish the full scope of the cuts.
Amazon’s January 2026 reduction of 16,000 jobs was a companywide figure, not the number of AGI layoffs. Keeping those figures separate is important: the public reporting does not provide a complete AGI-specific headcount or a confirmed total for the July cuts.

Is Amazon abandoning AGI?
No public evidence in the cited reporting shows that Amazon has stopped pursuing advanced AI or large models. In response to the July cuts, Amazon said it had been building large AI models for several years and that this remained one of its most important areas of work. It also said it was sharpening its focus on initiatives most important to customers, with some roles eliminated in parts of the AGI organization.
The better-supported interpretation is that Amazon consolidated leadership, changed the shape of its research organization and narrowed some priorities. That is a meaningful change: the original standalone lab structure appears not to have survived intact. But a lab’s closure or absorption into a larger organization does not by itself mean its research ended, and job cuts do not prove that Amazon has abandoned frontier models or agentic AI.

What the changes mean for Nova and AWS customers
Amazon’s internal reorganization does not, on its own, mean its commercial AI products are being discontinued. Amazon announced the Nova family of foundation models in December 2024 and made the models available through Amazon Bedrock. Its later leadership announcement explicitly placed Nova within the broader large-model organization.
For AWS customers, the practical distinction is between a company’s research structure and the availability of a particular product or model. A change in leadership is not a product end-of-life notice. Customers should check AWS Bedrock’s model lifecycle documentation and service announcements for model- and region-specific availability, lifecycle dates and migration requirements. The cited reports do not establish that Nova or Bedrock is being withdrawn.

What remains unknown
The public information does not establish where Luan will go next, how many people were affected by the AGI-specific cuts, which former lab projects continued elsewhere, or the precise reasons Amazon changed its structure. It also does not prove that the changes were driven by weak model performance, a particular cost target or a single leadership decision. Those explanations should not be treated as fact without further confirmation.
What is clear is the sequence: Prasad left broader AGI leadership at the end of 2025; DeSantis took on a combined organization spanning models, chips and quantum computing; Luan left the AGI Lab in February 2026; and Reuters reported further AGI-group cuts in July. Amazon’s structure changed materially, while the company continued to say that large models remained a priority.
