Amazon’s plan to invest another $15 billion in India was announced on June 23, 2023, after CEO Andy Jassy met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the United States. Amazon said it had already invested about $11 billion in India, taking its stated total to roughly $26 billion.
That is no longer the company’s latest India investment figure. On June 25, 2026, after a separate meeting with Modi in New Delhi, Amazon announced an additional $13 billion for artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure, bringing its planned India investment to $48 billion through 2030.
The $15 billion announcement was made in June 2023
Jassy said Amazon intended to invest another $15 billion in India. At the time, Amazon said it had invested approximately $11 billion in the country, implying a stated total of about $26 billion.

Jassy described the discussion as productive and said Amazon and the Indian government shared goals involving e-commerce, digitization, logistics, startups, exports, jobs and small businesses.

India’s government said the meeting also covered Amazon’s efforts to help micro, small and medium-sized enterprises become more digital. The discussions were broader than Amazon’s retail marketplace and included logistics and export opportunities.
Business Standard reported Jassy’s $11 billion and $15 billion figures, while India’s government-described meeting topics were reported by NDTV.
Most of the 2023 commitment was expected to support AWS
The $15 billion figure referred to Amazon’s India businesses overall, not solely to Amazon Web Services (AWS). However, contemporary reporting said the vast majority of the additional commitment was likely to support AWS expansion.

That distinction matters because Amazon had separately announced in May 2023 that AWS planned to invest $12.7 billion in cloud infrastructure in India by 2030. The $12.7 billion was an AWS-specific cloud plan; the $15 billion was an Amazon-wide India investment commitment.
In practical terms, the spending could cover cloud capacity, data-center equipment, technology operations and related infrastructure, rather than being limited to new Amazon retail warehouses.

What changed in 2026?
On June 25, 2026, Jassy met Modi again, this time in New Delhi. Amazon then announced an additional $13 billion investment in AI and cloud infrastructure.

The latest plan includes expanding AWS capacity in Mumbai and Hyderabad. Amazon said the infrastructure would support access to custom AI chips, managed AI services, cloud technologies and developer tools for businesses, developers, government organizations and enterprises.

What the $48 billion includes
The $48 billion is not a $48 billion AWS data-center project. Amazon describes it as planned investment across its India businesses for the 2026–2030 period.

The broader total can include AI and cloud infrastructure, e-commerce operations, fulfillment, delivery, logistics, entertainment and other Amazon activities in India. Amazon has not published a complete annual spending schedule or a precise split among those businesses.
Fulfillment and delivery expansion
Amazon also said it planned to launch more than 20 new fulfillment centers and more than 100 new last-mile delivery stations across India in 2026.
Those facilities are part of Amazon’s operational network. They should not automatically be treated as part of the $13 billion AI-and-cloud allocation unless Amazon specifically links them to that investment.
Why India matters to Amazon
India is important to Amazon on several fronts: consumer e-commerce, seller digitization, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, exports and enterprise technology.

Expanded AWS capacity could make cloud services and AI tools more readily available to Indian startups, companies and public-sector organizations. More local capacity may also help businesses build and run applications without relying entirely on infrastructure outside India.
Amazon’s retail and logistics investments have a different economic role. Fulfillment centers, delivery stations and seller programs can support the movement of goods and help Indian merchants reach customers domestically and internationally.
The company’s stated targets for 2030 include supporting more than 3.8 million jobs, enabling $80 billion in cumulative e-commerce exports, bringing AI benefits to 15 million small businesses and reaching 4 million government school students. Amazon also says it has digitized 12 million small businesses. These are Amazon’s own targets or reported program metrics, not independently verified outcomes established by the announcement.

The announcements signal a long-term strategic commitment to India, particularly to cloud and AI infrastructure. They also suggest that Amazon sees Indian businesses, government organizations, startups and exporters as important customers and partners.
But an announced investment is not the same as completed expenditure. The available statements do not show that Amazon has already spent the full $15 billion, $13 billion or $48 billion. They also do not disclose the precise timing of spending, the split between direct and indirect jobs, or whether every element is a binding contractual commitment.

The investment should not be described as $48 billion in cash paid to the Indian government. It may cover data centers, chips, networking, fulfillment facilities, logistics, employees, technology operations and other business spending. The announcement itself does not establish particular tax concessions, subsidies, government guarantees or procurement agreements.
There are also practical trade-offs. Data centers require substantial physical infrastructure, while cloud investment may create fewer direct jobs than fulfillment and delivery expansion. The benefits may flow partly through Amazon’s own commercial ecosystem. The announcement alone does not quantify power, land or cooling requirements, so those impacts should not be estimated from these figures.
Timeline of Amazon’s India commitments
- June 23, 2023: After meeting Modi in the United States, Jassy said Amazon had invested about $11 billion in India and intended to invest another $15 billion, taking the stated total to approximately $26 billion.
- December 2025: Amazon referred to a planned $35 billion investment across its India businesses.

Amazon has also said cumulative investments in India from 2010 through 2030 will exceed $88 billion. That is the company’s own cumulative accounting and should not be confused with the $48 billion planned for the 2026–2030 period.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The $15 billion figure is a genuine Amazon announcement, but it dates to June 2023. Amazon’s latest stated plan, announced after Jassy’s June 25, 2026 meeting with Modi in New Delhi, is $48 billion through 2030, including an additional $13 billion focused on AI and cloud infrastructure. These are planned investments, not proof that all the money has already been spent.
