Amazon said in November 2024 that employee work-contact information was obtained during a security incident at an unidentified property-management vendor. Amazon said its own systems and AWS remained secure and that it had not experienced a direct security event. The reported information included employee names, work email addresses, desk phone numbers and workplace locations.
The disclosure followed the publication of datasets reportedly connected to the 2023 MOVEit exploitation campaign. That makes this a third-party data exposure—not evidence, based on the available reporting, that Amazon.com or AWS was directly hacked.
What Amazon confirmed
According to CRN’s account of Amazon’s statement, the incident occurred at one of Amazon’s property-management vendors. The vendor’s incident affected multiple customers, including Amazon.
Amazon said:
- Amazon systems remained secure.
- AWS systems remained secure.
- Amazon had not experienced a direct security event.
- Employee work-contact information was involved.
The vendor was not publicly identified in the available reporting. It is therefore inaccurate to describe the disclosure simply as an intrusion into Amazon’s corporate network or AWS infrastructure.

What employee information was exposed?
The categories attributed to Amazon’s statement were:
- Employee names
- Work email addresses
- Desk or work phone numbers
- Building or workplace locations
Cyber Daily reported that the broader published datasets included names, titles, phone numbers, email addresses and other role-related information. That description applies to the datasets generally and should not be treated as confirmation that every listed field appeared in every Amazon record.
Amazon’s reported statement did not identify customer payment information, account passwords, AWS credentials, Social Security numbers, government identification numbers, payroll data or health information as exposed. That is not proof that such information could not exist elsewhere in a vendor’s systems; it means those categories were not identified in the available statement.

How MOVEit fits into the timeline
The story involves two different dates and events:
- 2023: Progress Software’s MOVEit Transfer file-transfer vulnerability was exploited in a widespread campaign, including exploitation associated with CVE-2023-34362.
- November 2024: Datasets attributed to the earlier campaign were published or reported, prompting Amazon to confirm that employee information had been affected through a vendor.
Cyber Daily reported that a threat actor using the name “Nam3L3ss” claimed the data was obtained through the MOVEit campaign, including an alleged acquisition date of May 31, 2023. The connection between the specific Amazon data and MOVEit was reported, but Amazon’s statement did not publicly establish every technical detail.
The available coverage also did not independently confirm that Nam3L3ss was affiliated with the Clop ransomware operation. That relationship should remain described as unconfirmed.
How many Amazon records were involved?
Cyber Daily reported that the dataset attributed to Amazon contained 2,861,111 records. That figure should not be presented as the number of affected Amazon employees.

A record count can include duplicate entries, former employees, incomplete rows or multiple records for one person. Amazon did not publicly confirm the 2,861,111 figure in the statement cited by CRN. The careful description is therefore: Cyber Daily reported that a published Amazon dataset contained 2,861,111 records.
Was Amazon or AWS hacked?
Amazon said no direct security event occurred in Amazon or AWS systems. The confirmed exposure was described as occurring at a property-management vendor that served multiple customers.
That distinction matters. A vendor can retain employee directory information without having access to production systems, customer accounts or cloud credentials. Exposure of records held by a facilities or property-management provider does not, by itself, demonstrate that an attacker entered Amazon’s identity systems or accessed AWS customer data.

Why work-contact information still creates risk
Names, work email addresses, phone numbers and building locations may appear less sensitive than financial information, but together they can make targeted fraud more convincing.
An attacker could use the information to create:
- Fake messages from Amazon IT, HR, facilities or security teams
- Calls that reference a real employee’s office or department
- Requests to confirm a badge, building, payroll or benefits detail
- Phishing emails containing accurate work-contact information
- Physical social-engineering attempts involving office access
Cyber Daily quoted Hudson Rock describing the information as potentially useful for phishing, identity theft and large-scale social engineering. However, exposed contact information alone does not prove that attackers can sign in to employee accounts or access Amazon systems.
What affected or potentially affected employees should do
Employees should treat the exposure primarily as a targeted social-engineering risk unless Amazon separately confirms more sensitive information was involved.

- Be cautious with office-related requests. Treat unexpected messages about buildings, badges, workplace changes, payroll, benefits or internal IT as suspicious.
- Verify through a known channel. Contact HR, facilities, security or the help desk using an established internal directory, bookmarked portal or known phone number—not details supplied in an unsolicited message.
- Do not approve unexpected MFA prompts. An unexpected authentication request can be an attempted account takeover.
- Do not trust accurate details automatically. A message can contain a real name, phone number, department or building and still be fraudulent.
- Report suspected phishing internally. Use Amazon’s established security or phishing-reporting process.
- Review password reuse. The reported data categories did not include passwords, but employees who reused a corporate password on unrelated services should change those unrelated passwords.
- Be alert to phone-based impersonation. Calls using a real name and workplace location can be designed to obtain additional personal or account information.
Based on the reported categories alone, employees should not assume that universal credit monitoring, a credit freeze or paid identity-theft protection is automatically necessary. Those measures become more relevant if government identification, financial information or other high-risk personal data is separately confirmed.
What remains unknown
The available reporting does not establish:
- The identity of the property-management vendor
- The number of unique Amazon employees affected
- Whether every record in the published dataset was authentic
- Whether information beyond work-contact data was involved
- Whether Nam3L3ss was connected to Clop
- Whether Amazon offered individualized notification or remediation to every affected person
Those gaps are why the 2.86 million figure and the MOVEit attribution should remain clearly labeled as reported or alleged rather than presented as Amazon-confirmed facts.
What companies can learn from the incident
The incident illustrates a third-party risk problem: information that seems routine to the company may still be valuable when aggregated by an attacker.
Organizations should consider:
- Maintaining an inventory of employee data held by property, facilities and other vendors
- Minimizing the fields vendors receive and retain
- Requiring prompt breach notification and cooperation in vendor contracts
- Separating facilities systems from corporate identity and production environments
- Preparing targeted phishing warnings after a vendor incident
- Confirming that vendors have patched or retired vulnerable file-transfer systems
- Testing whether vendor data can be deleted when it is no longer needed
Enterprise teams may evaluate third-party-risk platforms such as SecurityScorecard, BitSight or OneTrust Third-Party Risk Management. These tools can support monitoring and governance, but a risk score is not proof that a particular vendor’s internal records were safe or that a specific breach occurred.
The bottom line
Amazon confirmed that employee work-contact information was affected in a security incident at a property-management vendor, while saying Amazon and AWS systems remained secure. The reported dataset contained 2,861,111 records, but that is not a confirmed count of unique employees. The incident was disclosed in 2024 and was reportedly linked to data taken during the 2023 MOVEit campaign—not presented as a new direct breach of Amazon’s systems.
For employees, the most immediate practical concern is targeted phishing and impersonation using real names, work addresses, phone numbers or building information. Verify unexpected requests through known internal channels and do not treat accurate work details as proof that a message is legitimate.
